  1. This is awesome - my LEGO crazy kids will love it. Thanks for posting.
  2. Any thoughts about using Spectrum Math workbooks as part of Math acceleration for a rising 4th Grader ? It will be mostly afterschooling with LOF on the side. DS gets bored easily so I am not planning on making him do the whole book but a few problems in each section and move forward based on if he can do them independently. he has been stuck in a rut in school so thought to try it out over the summer.
  3. Thank you for posting the article - it was a very interesting read at lunch time. I come from a culture that does not hand out "praise" easily - I might have been overcompensating for that with my kids ;-).
  4. I am not sure yet if my kids are gifted but both of them seemed to need a little less sleep than what was prescribed. Both quit napping by 2 and if they napped they couldnt fall asleep before 11 PM. My older one would stay up really late if we let him and get up around 8. He is 9 now and finally seems to sleep around 8 hours. He is a night owl tho - he would prefer to sleep late and wake up late. My younger one who is almost 6 is following normal patterns since he was 4 - Falls asleep at around 9:30 and is up at 7:00.
  5. I have one scheduled tomorrow. I am bracing myself for complaints. DS seems to have started just putting random numbers on the page these days for his math work. He claims to be confused doing time problems that he had done very easily 2 years ago. Have to see how it goes.
  6. I have finally ordered MCT based on this recommendation. I have looked thru the materials and they are fabulous. Thanks!
  7. Thanks LOF as the search term did the trick ! NittanyJen - that is adorable I am hoping to use these for my 5 year old who is in K. He is exactly like you mentioned - always trying to catch up and do what his older brother is doing. When he was in preschool which followed the Montessori method he went up to his teacher and demanded that he be taught Multiplication just because his brother had started doing it :-)
  8. I would choose the Magnet option and then setup lot of playdates with the Neighborhood kids :-)
  9. Any feed back about the Elementary books ? Does it make Math "fun" as compared to say MUS ? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks
  10. The school used Lexile for DS8. His score suggests that he reads at High School level. To me it seems like its of not much use because it doesent seem to really measure comprehension. For example DS read The Little Prince 2 days ago. We spoke about it at dinner time and his understanding of the book was vastly different from mine. He understood it as an elementary school kid would, (very interested in the yellow snake that tried to attack the prince ;-)). It was a good discussion tho we both enjoyed it but what I am trying to say it tho he read it he didnt really grasp all that the book had to offer. Maybe he will re read it again in a few years and understand it better.
  11. Congratulations on starting this adventure with your child and Welcome! You are sure to find lots of encouragement and helpful insights on this board to assist you in this task.
  12. ROFL! I have had that happen at home too. Once it continued for quite a bit and no actual work was getting done. So I wrote down a Differential equation for him to solve. He behaved very well after that.
  13. I agree wholeheartedly!! I have had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that my son has been labelled gifted at school. To the OP - is it possible or worthwhile to get a second opinion ?
  14. If she already knows how to look for answers I think getting stressed out is the real problem here. I would start with getting her to relax first - take a dozen deep breaths first. This is said to automatically calm a person. Then split the job on hand to several small tasks. Start with one small task at a time and move on to the next one when done. For example when working on a crossword puzzle - let her concentrate on just one word at a time instead of worrying about all the answers she has to find. Good Luck :001_smile:
  15. Thank you all - I plan to try all these ideas out with him hopefully atleast one will work for him.
  16. DS refuses to even try to memorize multiplication tables. He has been working on multi digit multiplication and division for months now and he does it by adding up in his mind. He is pretty fast considering that he is doing repeated addition but not fast enough to complete sheets his teacher will soon give out for e.g, 100 problems in 5 mins. I just got the Rockin' the Standards CD for him. He liked listening to it last night - hopefully the numbers stick:glare: He tried TimezAttack last year but gave up mid way. Do you have any other suggestions ? apart from timed work sheets which he loathes? Thanks!
  17. I am not too happy about the AG program offered in our school district because it is just 1 hour per week. The kids get pulled out of regular class rooms and go to the AG room. But something is better than nothing so I shall count it as a blessing. We do have magent schools here but getting in there is based on pure luck rather than ability. Thank you for the science link - I wasnt able to use them this weekend but he would definetly like it. He played for weeks with his Electricity and Magents kit from AC Moore. He hasnt used Scratch or Light Bot yet - it will be interesting to see how he responds to them.:001_smile: AAS is a blast so far - my little one is enjoying it.
  18. :blush:oops I should have known that huh ? Unfortunately the school will not do anymore testting since he already qualified for their program. I should probably look for a good testing center and get him tested privately. Thanks!
  19. I had a meeting with the AIG teacher and she said she would work with his teacher to supplement his home work soon. Your advice lines up nicely with what I was hoping to do.:)
  20. Thanks everyone for such a warm welcome!! We had a good 60 minute session this morning so keeping my fingers crossed :-)
  21. My older one loves to read and play video games. He will read anything but prefers fiction and adores comedies. He loves to write occassionally when he gets the writing bug and enjoys puzzles, mazes, legos. He goes thru phases like the changing seasons. My younger one is very smart but he is in awe of his brother and will wait for him to do things for him. He loves to sing and dance :-)
  22. Thanks jenbrdsly - you have been so helpful to me. Btw we purchased AAS after reading your blog. Have started my younger one on it and he is loving it so far.
  23. Hi everyone, I joined here a few months ago but havent really been active due to various reasons. I have 2 kids DS9 and DS5. Both go to public schools here in NC. My DS9 was tested this year for AG programs that start in 4th grade and he scored "exceptionally well" (Words used by his AIG test coordinator) He scored a 9E(V-) in CoGAT and 99%(That is the maximum % for some reason even tho he got all questions right ) in ITBS for Reading and Math(Those were the only 2 subjects his school tested him for). He has been placed in very strong for both reading and math groups for next year. So now that it is official, I am slowly trying to come to grips with how to handle this responsibility. He is bored at school and that I think has led to some behavioral issues like taking too long to complete his work and not paying attention in class. He is a very polite and reserved kid so he is not disrespectful to his teachers but his teacher remarked in his report card for last quarter that he just doesnt seem to care about his work sometimes. I try to engage him with some activities after school but most days he is too tiered so he just wants to relax. He loves to play video games and read. Homeschool/Private school is not an option for us. I just hope that he does loose his love of learning because of school. I am reading thru the threads here and have found them very informative. I hope to pick your brains sometimes to find solutions to challenges that I am bound to face.Wish me well please I do need all the luck in the world.:001_smile:
