  1. I am glad to read that other kids face this issue too - I thought my DS had some strange problem. :-)
  2. Wow that is absolutely amazing - museum display worthy.
  3. Thank you for replying jenbrdsly. Unfortunately my DS hardly speaks my native tongue anymore. Have to tell you we used your Peanut butter, M&M's idea to learn about reducing fractions last weekend. It was a hit even tho a few M&Ms kept disappearing during the session.:001_smile: Would you be able to suggest some books or curriculum to improve a third graders language arts skills ? He loves to read(He is currently reading Dahl) - would making a list of new words he come across help(Like a mini dictonary for himself) ? His teacher does not beleive in weekly spelling tests so he does not get a weekly list.
  4. Hi, I had posted a few weeks ago about DS1 who is not very motivated but whose teacher said he needs more challenges. I just got his CogAT results for 3rd grade and he scored 9E(V-). This as per the CogAT site indicates that he score much lower in his verbal abilities compared to Quantitative and NonVerbal. Looking at his raw scores in verbal I see he scored 60 out of 65 so just he got 5 items wrong (he scored 65/65 in Non Verbal and 59/60 in Quantitative). I actually thought he was very good in language arts and do not afterschool that subject at all.Coming to my question now should I really be worried about his verbal skills ? What sort of supplements can I provide as an afterschooler? (Have to add that English is not our first language tho we use it a lot at home ) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Thank you jenbrdsly. Anything with M&Ms or skittles is sure to intrest my DS ;). Your blog is very interesting as well. I will pick your brain one of these days about some of your posts. I had some time to look at the accelerated learners board today and found some fascinating threads there. Your advice is greatfully accepted.
  6. I just got back from our first quarter parent teacher meeting and am overwhelmed about what I need to do with my DS8. He is currently in third grade and our school district starts various testing from this grade. His teacher said that from the other tests they took this quarter he has scored very highly. His reading she said was in the higher 6th grade level and his comprehension was in high 4th grade level. In math too she said the results were that he was well above his grade level and needed to be challenged. I knew he was bright but it seems like he can do more than just his grade level work. He loves to read always has and he has varied interests in ficton and non ficton so I am not too worried about his Language portion.(He is currently reading Roald Dahl, How to train your Dragon Series and last week got a Hardy Boys book from his school Library) But math is where I feel he is not being challenged. He is not very motivated so its hard for me to pin him down after school to do some extra work. With homework and his other activities we somehow manage to while away the evening. He can spend hours on his legos and science kits but when he sees a work book its "work" to him and not fun anymore Do you folks have an suggestion which math program I should use for him? Something that would hold his interest and instill a love of learning.
