  1. My son(3rd) came it of ps this year hating and struggling with writing. WWE has been great. It has really boosted his confidence and he'll tell you he loves the program. Now when we add in extras like letter writing, thank you notes, etc. he completes them with confidence and they are well done. FWIW he hated WWW. Good luck to you. I hope you are able to find what works best for your son.
  2. We just finished our first level of a subject. We took a picture with the book, gave each other a big hug and a high five.
  3. We will finish FLL 3 this week. My son loves it and retains quickly so we plug along quickly. Should I start FLL4 now or fill in with something else and start in Sept?
  4. We do both. It's quick and effective. Good phonics reinforcement, word usage practice. Very cost effective. I bought the spelling TE it gives the correlating Plaid phonics lesson. You could definelty match up the lessons yourself if you wanted.
  5. In my opinion, for what it's worth, in 2nd grade if you have SOTW with the activity guide and the recommended encyclopedias your fine. I think with limited funds/time its more important to cover your basics.
  6. I accidentally ordered the wrong one. They are different enough that it bothered me. I changed it.
  7. We are giving this a try. My son is 9 so we are on the younger level(4th). Only done two lessons so far. So far so good. We are using it with FLL3 and WWE3 on the off days. Not much info from me but a little evening bump.
  8. I was just talking to my sister about this, lierally just hung up the phone. She is an elementary special Ed teacher. She has a student (4th)who just can't get it. She too is baffled what to do. Keep working be patient he'll get it.
  9. Those look great. Certainly can see how much work you've put into them. Thanks for generously sharing.
  10. Thanks Geo We will be finishing the first book this summer or early next year. I should have written 1/2. We are working through 1 at a pretty good pace. I appreciate your help. FWIW we love the program. I noticed you want to give it a try. I encourage you too. It's not as hard to Use as it seems and the results have been great.
  11. We will continue with with what we are doing this year. I got lucky with all our picks. We love most of them, and the ones I don't love he does. So it will be. MM(not sure what level yet, probably 5) SOTW 2/3 with AG and lots of library books (2 days per week) American History with multiple resources (1 day) BFSU 2 FLL4 WWE 4 definitely, maybe giving EIW a try on off days Spelling Workout E Geography designed by me Literature- continuing to read/discuss great books Vocabulary mixed in with literature GSWL Recorder/keyboard Art lessons soccer/baseball The most important thing we have learned this year is we need a consistent definite schedule. We will continue with this. Please feel free to comment on anything I may have missed. I'm still new at this.
  12. I'd start with 2A. you can accelerate as needed. I think starting with concepts he partially understands will help him adjust better to the teaching style of MM. It will also increase his confidence and hopefully help him "like" the program. I took my son back a full grade when we started for those reasons. It has worked out great.
  13. We are mostly nose to the grindstone workers. We do have fun because we read aloud a lot which my kid loves. No crafts here(neither of us enjoy them). We use once in a while as a fun school day. I am preparing my kid for success in the world, school is his job. There will be things he doesn't like or considers boring. Our homeschool is structured and hard work but we both love it. We have great days!
  14. My library cart is steaming! Thanks so much for the great books/ideas. My son is going to love it. I can't wait to check out national chemistry week on the big computer in the AM. Looks like they have some free stuff But it's hard to tell on my iPod.
  15. Thanks for all the great tips! I bought him a periodic table placemat. He thinks I'm the best Mommy ever LOL We will definitely be checking out the great recs everyone made.
  16. Anybody read this? We are reading Archamedies and the door of science and my son loves it. He is also completely obsessed with the periodic chart right now. I was wondering if this has the same feel. The library doesn't have it so I would need to buy it. Thanks
  17. Would you order up a grade level? We will be 4th grade next year. I was thinking of giving this a try. Not sure if I should get 3/4 or 5/6? Sorry for the hijack :)
  18. AprilMay, The book is called "the story of the USA" by franklin Escher,Jr. Unfortunately I don't know how to link :/ like I said I like books LOL. Rainbow resources has it.
  19. I appreciate a curriculum that can be used as a family but I also think it is necessary to include experiments/activities/discussions that can be used 1:1. As a parent of an only this is important to us. Thanks
  20. We started in third grade with SOTW(ps till then) sobi know what you mean about waiting 3-4 years before introducing US history. I think if you start in 1 and they get there in 3rd 4th it's perfect. Wish I would have done it :( I added American history one day per week to our plan. Resources that I researched weren't that great. Many things were just too much for the base I was looking for. I bought the complete book of US history as a spine. Basically so I can know where to go next (let's just say history is not my strong point) I also bought the workbook sonlight uses(can't remember the name) because my son likes that sort of stuff. I get books for each weeks topic from the library. So far so good. I also bought an intellego unit study, which i really wanted to like, but after going through it I realized I don't like that much (OK pretty much any) computer work. I am an old school book lover!
  21. I work 24 hours per week. 7pm-7am. It works out fine. I just adjust our schedule around work/sleep.
  22. In 12 days! I had to tell someone it's a surprise!
  23. I am not a big fan of downloads but it is easy to use. Everything you need is included. There is no teacher text the teaching is on the student pages. With the download you can make extra worksheets if needed. I like that feature when I give a review "quiz" to make sure skills are being retained. At the beginning of each chapter there is an introduction and extra websites you could use. Those don't need to be printed. I print a chapter at a time as needed. I really didn't think I would like doing it this way, but it has been no problem and it is a really good program so its worth the effort.
