  1. We've been using it for two weeks or so now. We are using the Life Science Module A : Cells and Heredity. I don't like it...for us. Why? 1. I find the online materials not very user friendly. I figured them out, but I can see it being a lot of work for some. 2. The material is fairly basic for us, my son who is using it reads all the time. He knows most of the material already. 3. I am irked they advertise a home school pacing guide to go with it. The guide is a very basic optional schedule. I really hoped it would have more assistance for adapting the program to home use. All of the material is available online once you register your Module. You don't even need the book after that. It can be read online. Some good things. 1. The whole thing is online once you register. 2. There is downloadable audio for all the textbook so you could listen to it on an iPod or mp3 player 3. There are digital activities not just the text online. I really think it is a decent program, and excellent for schools. It doesn't work for us though. On a side note, I might try using it for my 9 year old. It might suit him. I'll add more later if I think of it, my brain is mush today.
  2. I am glad you are having a good experience thus far. We tried joining on two different occasions and it was a disaster. So we have decided to find other activities. I echo the earlier comment, please be cautious who you trust. We've had some issues in my area with leaders harming children as well. Scary indeed. Over all I think Boy Scouts can be an excellent experience though.
  3. We will be doing the ACT this year, 7th grade. As for scores counting later for college, colleges look at the latest score not all of them last I had read.
  4. We used Hooked on Phonics when my son was that age wanting to learn. There weren't very many other options yet. When they want to learn, go for it. There are so many fun new options now.
  5. I want to preface this with the fact I haven't read through all the posts. I am responding to the original post. We tried Apologia General Science. We strongly agree with evolution. It didn't work for us. For a science text from a YEC point of view it did try to show both points of view but it was still too strongly YEC that we couldn't just sort out the stuff we didn't agree with. I really love the format of Apologia and wish it had worked for us. We ended up with Plato Middle School science and some science kits and my son LOVES it.
  6. We have used Plato Middle School Earth and Space Science. My son really enjoyed it and has learned a great deal. He is a gifted learner and finished it in half the time expected. Plato Middle School science is used by the Johns Hopkins Gifted and Talented program. So it isn't a light program, but it is enjoyable. There is no hands on component, so if you want experiments you might want to pick up a small science kit related to the topic of study you choose.
  7. We used Plato Earth and Space science this past year. We purchased it halfway through the year via the HSBC sale. So we paid $30. My son really loved it and I plan to do the Life Science one in the Fall, and if he finishes it early we'll buy the 3rd one when the sale hits again. It is an excellent program, just lacking in hands on activities. That is easily fixable by picking up a few little science kits or a book of related experiments.
  8. HSBC has an offer for Ko's Journey now!
  9. We are going to give this a try once payday rolls around, I am really excited to have found it. Has anyone tried it yet?
  10. It is possible to copy the grade book from one computer onto a flash drive or similar device and move it to the new computer. I would suggest checking the TT website for specific instructions on how to do this.
