  1. I don't think it would be difficult. You might could pull questions from the 7th grade material, too.
  2. I like the idea of the 4th grader watching and you adding in living books for him. You could read the textbook to him as well and just not have him do the tests and other higher grade level work. You might could get Christian Kids Explore Biology and try to match up the topics with BJU. Ds was in 2nd grade last year when dd did the Life Science course online, and he really enjoyed watching some of the lessons with his sister. I think Mrs. Vick is fabulous, too, so I just ordered 3rd grade science for ds during BJU's $99 special before Christmas. He starts it tomorrow.
  3. I tried some cursive workbooks from RR when ds was in the latter half of 2nd. I didn't feel he did well with a lot of curls to the letters. I found BJU's handwriting and it's going very well this year. I used half of the 2nd grade book this year already (1st half is manuscript) and am having him start the 3rd grade book now. They developed their own font and it's so much easier for ds, than what we tried in the past. Here is a link to their curricula. I have not used the teacher editions at all.
  4. Thursday...dh teaches public school and it's when he goes back. I like that I just follow his schedule and don't really have to decide. I don't know about next year, though. We have do 180 days here in GA, but his school is going to 170 next year with 20 minutes longer each day. Maybe our 10 extra days can be field trips with him.
  5. Thank you, that's a good idea. I definitely don't want a non-stick surface. That's why I asked for cast iron in the first place.
  6. Would it have to state on the packaging that it has a non-stick surface? This one does not state that anywhere. It just says Cast Iron 11 in. Round Skillet. The enamel is on the outside which seems to be just to give it a nice color.
  7. The brand is called Grand Gourmet, and it looks like enamel on the outside.
  8. I think I should at least wash it with hot water before the first use, or is that a bad idea? I don't really know how to season one. If you put the coconut oil on it and baked it, what temperature and how long?
  9. I was given a cast iron skillet for Christmas. It does not state if it's seasoned or not. It just says to wash with a soft dish cloth and hot, soapy water before using it. Does this mean that it is seasoned? Do I need to do anything to it to make sure it is? Thanks, any other tips for cooking on cast iron would be appreciated, too. I've never had one before.
  10. I'll be praying for you and her. My sister had a problem with a high heart rate that high when taking decongestants. She does have a mitrovalve prolapse, too.
  11. Dd says it's supposed to help you convert the audio from Youtube vidoes so that you can put the songs on your Ipod and other devices. I don't want to do it if it's illegal, though.
  12. Thanks for all the tips. I currently use Straight Talk prepaid cell phone service which gives me web access, but I don't think I could do anything like that. If cell phone service is the best way to go, I'll go visit our Verizon store, take my laptop with me, and talk to them. I don't think I could use dial up because ds is going to be using BJU online streaming for science this semester. I think the lessons are about 30 minutes long, so I would think that would take a very long time to download on dial-up, if it's even possible.
  13. Can anyone recommend the best way to get mobile internet service for a laptop you already own? I'm going to be traveling a couple of days a week to help my parents with some things, but they don't have internet access. I really need it for some school stuff with ds. The kids will be traveling with me and taking schoolwork to do there.
  14. Dd would like to download a youtube converter. Is this legal and can anyone recommend a trustworthy site for one? Thanks!
  15. Thank you all for the comments. It definitely sounds like both are doable without using something now. I'll just continue on our plan for this year and pick up LL next year.
  16. The hall linen closet is now storage of art and science supplies, as well as extra school supplies (folders, paper, spiral notebooks, crayons, glue, etc.) and homeschool catalogs. I store sheets in the top of each bedroom closet, blankets in underbed bags, and the towels are all stored in the bathrooms (under sinks and on cute shelves). I use a tool box to store extra school supplies such as packs of glue sticks, crayons, etc. I use a somewhat short, flat open cardboard box (like from a case of canned goods) to store all the Wii remotes, nunchucks, battery chargers, and other remotes for tv, cable, etc. It can easily be slid under the couch to clean up quickly and you always know where everything is.
  17. I'm still researching some, but here's how it's looking for ds who will be in 4th grade. History: Biblioplan Year 2 Science: Apologia or BJU 4 Math: BJU 4th/5th Critical Thinking: Perplexors, Balance Benders, Logic Countdown Grammar: unsure about this Spelling: online with ACSI lists Writing: IEW SWI A Cursive: BJU Reading: Novel/Movie Club with friends; BJU Reading 4
  18. If anyone used LL courses for high school, could you give me some advice? I would like dd to use British Medieval next year and possibly one of the Shakespeare packs. We have no prior experience with LL and the website states these are more difficult courses. Dd attended a literature class last year with a retired English teacher. He did cover some literary analysis and writing. She has gone through Teaching the Classics 6 week syllabus this year and is going through Figuratively Speaking on literary terms. Should I consider doing LL's Speech pack this year or even some of LL8 in order to make next year easier?
  19. I don't want it to come down until after January 2nd because we are having friends over that night whom we haven't exchanged gifts with yet. It won't feel like Christmas if the decorations aren't up. I'm hoping we can leave them up until that Wednesday the 4th or better yet, that next Saturday, the 7th. I love them being up and feel sad when we put them away!
  20. I really like your ideas. BJU English does have a CD with resources I might could print as review. I was going to try A Beka 4th grammar for the first time, so I could save it for later. He can definitely do the online things when we are there, which I was thinking would help me out. My parents don't have internet but are considering paying for me to have a service for my laptop. He can read in the car, but we will be traveling at night. The light bothers me more in our car than in our van, but our van has lots of miles on it and hate to drive it too much. I was thinking maybe I should get SOTW on CD because it is the spine ds is using and we're only through chapter 15. Those are great thoughts about IEW when home and taking some time to catch things up at home. Thank you so much. It really helps to have others think things through with you.
  21. I'm going to have some big schedule changes. I will be going two days a week to help my parents who live 3.5 hours away. The kids and schoolwork will go with me, so I'm going to be figuring out schooling on the road, away from home, and busy days when we are home. I have a thread asking for advice on what subjects to really put my focus with ds if anyone wants to chime in there, too! Any advice is very much appreciated.
