  1. I'm very interested in getting the CD now that you pointed this book out!
  2. My daughter is 8. We bought the PDF which was a lot of pages to print. However following the method got us great results. My daughter did it for like 5 minutes 4 times a week and now she can draw the USA !
  3. We used Brookdale House's Drawing the USA this year, and it was great. My daughter learned so much. We bought it when she had a sale on downloads which made it even more affordable.
  4. Read classic books, and CLE Reading CLE Language Arts (switching from Rod and Staff to this. . .we'll see how it goes) Vocabulary from Classic Roots Maxwell's School Composition Lively Latin book 2 CLE Math 800 Fallacy Detective and Balance Benders Memoria Press History of Medicine and World of Biology VP Self-paced modern history Evan Moore Daily Geography 6 and reading travel books Morning Family work (folk songs, Shakespeare, Bible, Catechism, Poetry, Music (Jazz), Picture Study, Art, Read Aloud)
  5. So I have done Rod and Staff English, but I'm switching my boys to CLE Language Arts next year. We did W&R for one year and it was fine but I never really found my groove with it. So next year I am planning to use Killgallon (either sentence or paragraph composing) to supplement with my fifth grader. My sixth grader is going to use Maxwell's school composition. Other than that I will continue to have them write one paragraph summaries most day of something they have read.
  6. We did Logic Liftoff once a week and Balance Benders once a week. So twice a week total.
  7. My fifth grader did Logic Liftoff and Balance Benders this year.
  8. I'm making my plans for next year and I'm deciding between the 7 Continents series or Daily Geography for my boys who will be in 5th and 6th grades. They have spent the past few years learning to identify the countries of the world and reading travel-type books. Now I would like to work on more maps skills. Would it matter much which of these Evan Moor series I chose? They both seem good based on samples.
  9. I'm doing English 5 this year with two boys. I don't have the worksheets, and I don't think we need them for additional practice. There is plenty of practice is the text. However, some days I do wish we had the worksheets to do INSTEAD of the text to make the work load easier. I bought the worksheets for English 3 with my daughter and I really like having them for that reason.
  10. Have you looked at Dictation Day by Day? That is what we use. It is a free resource and very well organized.
  11. We used them here. I liked the variety of extra practice on some items. I don't think they are essential, but if you have a child for whom math does does come easily, the sheets can be helpful.
  12. I think Spunky is a great inexpensive and hardly-known option for basic beginning math.
  13. My children do have their afternoons free. We start a little after 7 AM with group work. My fourth grader is my slowest worker and he is almost always done by lunch. If he really focuses he is done by 11.
  14. I did the O.T. last year with my four. We did do it during our morning time at the kitchen table. We aimed to do it three times a week and it usually took us the three mornings to do one book of the Bible. It is easy to do it at whatever pace you want. I kept the pace rather slow so they had time to do nice coloring and had time to really discuss.
  15. You're very welcome. Hope it is useful for you.

  20. I'm in PA and we have to count days (180 days). I'm much like Garga in that I like a schedule. My goal is always 160 days of "lessons" or typical school days where we follow the schedule and 20 days of field trips. The field trip days are often sprinkled throughout the school year, but I also count summer camps. We start counting days July 1. I start "lesson days" the last week of August. We really don't take off much during the school year except around Thanksgiving, Christmas and a few days at Easter. We are typically done by the first week of May.
  21. I scheduled it all out ahead of time, planning for 4 days a week plus 1 day of week that would be only for review. At our current pace it will take us a little under 2 school years or a little over 1 1/2 years. My son was in fourth grade when we started and it was a good pace for him. We also did all the history even though we had covered it with VP history. He likes it and it changes up some of the days. I can cut and paste what we did here if that would be helpful as a sample schedule. I would say our schedule was on the slow and steady side, and like I said after 4 days of my lesson plans every fifth day was a review day. If we had done 5 days a week of lessons we would have finished much quicker.
  22. Adelectableeducation.com has a wonderful Charlotte Mason podcast. They have one episode just on what is a living book. Also under each episode on their podcast they list some of their favorite living books for each topic. Also sabbath mood homeschool has a large section on her website devoted to CM method of teaching science.
  23. Thank you for this pep talk. This is truly how I want to do it. :001_smile:
