  1. Yes! Yes! Yes! If you can afford it, get the Scooba. Mine died a year ago and I miss it so much. We have tile from our front through our kitchen and nook, plus bathrooms. Our tile is slightly bumpy so smooth mops with pads don't clean well.

Since our Scooba died I have tried the Shark Steam mop which seemed to glide over the tile and not clean in the bumps. My shark stopped working after 8 months so what a waste since I paid $90 for it. I just switched to Hoover Floormate which is better than the Shark, but more cumbersome to use than either the Scooba or the Shark. Floormate clean better than the Shark, but not as good as Scooba.

The plus side of the Scooba is that it cleans really well and cleans by its self. I use to turn in on and then go outside and watch the kids play or do other chores. I love that after preparing for large holiday meal, when the floor was messy, Scooba cleaned up while I had time to get ready.

The down sides of the Scooba are the cost, loudness and that they take a while to clean, (45 min. I think). Also plan to replace the battery every year which is expensive, (check ebay for better deal on batteries). You will also need to clean out the unit after each use, but I think it is easier to clean than the Floormate. The other downside is that it is too big to clean behind a toilet so I rarely used it in the guest or children's bathrooms. It was easier for my children to hand wipe the floors in those rooms. Because the unit is loud, I didn't like to run it during homeschool hours. So usually ran it after school before dinner or late evening.

Use can use either special floor cleaner or white vinegar in the machine. I ran out of vinegar and soap and decide to try apple cider vinegarnBig mistake! My floor was a sticky mess and ny Scooba stopped working after that. I miss it so much and am currently saving up for a new one.

I had the larger version 350. I think they have two models now, the larger one and a new smaller version that goes behind toilets. My understanding is that the smaller version, (230) doesn't work that well, so check the reviews if that is the one you want to buy. They have a bad rep for breaking so get an extended warranty if available.

ETA - They advertise that the Scooba will vacuum first then mop. I never did that. I always swept the kitchen/ nook first and then used the Scooba. I think that is why my Scooba lasted so long, (well over 3 years).

  2. Talked to his worker today. Got a bit more information. Sounds like he is a kid that has been stuck in a bad system for a few years. He was matched with an adopted family from out of state but their state denied their adoptive homestudy (don't know why). Basically it sounds like he hasn't had much of a chance at a normal life.

She is going to send us his adoption profile, updates, information, etc. tomorrow and then once we read/review that we can decide where to go from there. She is also going to meet with him this week and just see how he felt about our family, etc......without telling him we might be interested, more in just a "how did your weekend go" type thing.

On a positive, he has no history of lying, stealing, acting out, aggression, etc.

It was interesting though that all of our kids came to us privately and asked if we could PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be his foster parents or adopt him if he could be adopted, etc......not knowing that he is free for adoption. All they were told is that he needed respite (a babysitter) for the weekend.

So excited for you and him.

    Praying for you.

    Keep us posted.

  3. If it's a charter school, and tuition-free, is it public?

The website states that Hillsdale refuses any subsidiaries from the federal government. Does that mean it will take state subsidization?

If it's a public charter, then it will be subject to the same STAAR-based curricula as the public schools.

Yes, public charter, but not owned by Hillsdale College, so Hillsdale is not accepting public funds. They are just helping set up classical charter schools on a consulting basis to get more students classically educated.

The charter school is owned by Responsive Ed. My youngest are currently attending a Responsive Ed chater school for middle school. They do administer the STAAR test, but have students study on their own using Study Island. Curriculum is not STAAR based at the school they currently attend, and the curriculum they are planning to use is not STAAR based.

  4. Founder Classical Academy will be tuition free for grade 6-10, (grades 11 and 12 to be phased in over following years). My understanding is that they will be using Core Knowledge curriculum for 6-8 grade. High school curriculum is being determined.

There is a meeting tomorrow night at the school. Hillsdale College is supporting the launch of the school so information is on their website, (first bullet point):

  5. We live in suburb of DFW so most activities are in our town - dance, karate, music, Target, Walmart, AMC theatre and outdoor mall.

I travel 15 minutes into next town to visit indoor mall, Joanns, Half Price Books and our children's charter school.

We live between Dallas and Fort Worth which both have zoos and museums. Takes 30 min to 60 to get there depending on traffic. Six Flags is 35 minutes away.

We live close to the airport too. We don't travel much, but it is nice for out of town visitors. We can park at the airport for free and meet them at baggage area. From baggage area to our house in about 30 minutes. Love it!

Part of our town is rural with horses and chickens. We live in a neighborhood with an HOA so no chickens for us.

  6. My sis is in Huntington Beach which is close to Laguna but not as expensive.

ETA - when we lived in CA we were looking to move out of state because we were concerned about the COL for our children. Housing pricing in Ventura we near the $750K mark and we didn't want that financial burden on our children if they decided to live near us. One of our top 5 picks of where to live was southern VA. LOL!

  7. We have a bookcase filled with art supplies in our breakfast nook. We have some colored pencils, thick markers, thin marker, gold metalic pen (they use this all the time for card making), water colors with brushes, scrapbook paper, stickers, Modge Podge with foam brush, lined paper, regular paper, construction, google eyes (they use these all the time), cardstock cut in half to make cards, envelopes for the cards (get at Walmart 4 3/8" X 5 3/4"), self-inking stamps from dollar store, self-stick foam cutouts, yarn scraps, felt, and foam sheets. Every now and then we buy acrylic paint for something. I store those out of reach. We have slowly added these item over time.

I labeled our bins, but the area still gets messy. You might want to add a monthly chore to your children's chore chart to straighten the art center!

  8. With a public charter school I would choose your battles carefully. Our experience with a charter school is that the admin. staff wear many hats and are stretched thin. I wouldn't complain over something that is not critically important to you. Give the administrators lots of encouragment, praise and volunteer hours. Voice your concern over things that are crucial for you. For us it has been students cheating during independent lab, poor curriculum choice and a student watching p@rn on their iphone on school property. For me prayer before an event once or twice a year - no biggie.

  9. I assume that your whole family will go. I would try and borrow 3 packs, sleeping bags and a tent from friends for the first time before purchasing new because they are expensive. Also go someplace that will help fit the packs to your body like REI although I am sure there are others. The good backpacking equipment is lightweight so don't just get stuff at Wal Mart. If you really get into it you will probably want a little stove as well. You will want moleskin for blisters in your first aid kit. Pick trails that are suitable for the person that will struggle the most. You want them to have a good time as well.

:iagree: When I was in high school we used to rent our back packs, (I think from REI). Such great memories.

  10. very reasonable.

    Stick to your guns.

:iagree: We have a password on our computer too. We even had to go as far as setting up a separate "school" account on our computer with no access to games, Facebook, Youtube etc.. That is the only computer access they have during the day. After all their school work and chores are done they can have access to the "play" account. We don't have TV stations or cable. We also lock away our Xbox gaming systems during the school year. It comes out during week long school breaks and for the summer.
