  1. gosh..... now I want to go back to school! To bad I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. ;)
  2. I thought the very same things last week. PS started last Thursday and I thought for sure DD would have wanted to go back. NOPE. She couldn't care less. :)
  3. We will be starting our 3rd week ;) This is the week were she will do all subjects so we will see how it goes. We are following the PS calendar so she can have the same days off as her sister who goes to PS.
  4. We just finished week 2. We are reading Charolotte's Web. We will then watch the movie :)
  5. The Writing Road to Reading. I am sure there may be others that use a spelling notebook as well.
  6. Does it really take a lot more time compared to the other programs? Granted I only have one student and we have not hit the spelling portion of WRTR.. we will hit that in a couple weeks........ I was assuming it wont take more than 30 mins when I add in the spelling part? For me if it takes an hour or other amount of time is worth it b/c DD is a struggling reader and I want her to know the phonograms inside and out and how to break down a word to spell it along with knowing all the rules......
  7. I had her do the first clock section today from 1B and she breezed through it... so I think her low scores also had to do with lack of focus as well....... We will just continue working on it like we have using the clock through out the day...... I will set up a store to play with her as well. Thanks!
  8. Thanks everyone! I also noted that those were her weak areas thats why I wasn't sure If going back would be worth it since she seems good in the important areas. Thanks everyone for the feed back! I think I will start 2A and just do some extra work with clocks and money through the year and make sure we do all the word problems !:)
  9. My DD 7.5 will be home schooled for 2nd grade and for the foreseeable future. She finished grade 1 in public school. I had her take the end of year grade 1 placement test and she scored a 84%. Based on this score I am wondering if I should do 1B with her first instead of 2A. The breakdown of her scores are: Basic Addition/Subtraction facts within 0-10 : 27/28 PV and 2 digit numbers: 13/13 Adding/subtracting 2 digit numbers: 18/19 Basic Word Problems: 14/22 Clock: 10/14 Geometry/Measuring: 6/7 Money: 3/5 Total 91/108 Thoughts?
  10. Visual Learner.......I have kept WWE and WRTR and cursive. Everything else is done through TFL. We will supplement math as needed with MM topic books. She is a much happier kid which = a very happy mom.
  11. I had our plans all set for 2nd grade.... everything all in order I just bought the next level up from last year that worked........ and she cried every time we did school since we started. SO I made some major changes. She now does her work happy and without complaints. But all the pretty things I had set for us to do now sit unused and will never be used because the pretty little things don't work for her now. Only 2 things have survived the overhaul.........they were the cheapest too! LOL. I will get over it eventually. :) Has anyone had to do some major and I mean MAJOR changes within 1-2 weeks of starting school?
  12. We just started WWE 2 with my 2nd grader.... SHe is having a difficult time as well but I break things into smaller chuncks with regards to narration and summary. I will as a few more questions then have her tell me in her own words about the story. She did well with dictation but she is really good at memorizing ..... Keep at it ... level 2 is building a skill they dont have so it wont be perfect.
  13. We start tomorrow. 2nd grade! woot! She is less than thrilled.
  14. Someone should make a social group so that way us newbies who need encouragement can vent/ask questions in one place :)
  15. We are going through the Phonograms now with my DD [7]. We are up to Phonogram 43 but she still has some trouble with a couple of the single phonograms that have multiple sounds "y" being one of them and just 2-3 double phonograms so we are not moving forward till we have them down. She is doing great with spelling them by dictation. When she was in school their spelling consisted of spelling the "sight words" so when we finally get to the Ayres list I know the beginning list she will already know how to spell. The marking system will be new to her as well so I am sure it will slow us down some. When going through the words and there is a rule next to it do I just explain the rule but do not expect her to really remember/apply it b/c that will come in 3rd grade and up when they are expected to remember the rules as we move through them?
  16. I have read the 4th edition 5x. cover to cover. The first 3 x I might as well have been reading a foreign language :) It has slowly been starting to sink in. THANKFULLY! What has helped me put it together: Watching videos on you tube I purchased Starting a Spelling Notebook which has helped me gel some things together I was not putting together. Reading all the threads on WRTR here Ellie My mom is a 2nd grade teacher in AZ who's co worker is trained in Spalding and will answer my question. Doing my own spelling notebook I did purchase the cards, phonogram dvd, spelling assessments and reading assessment book A from spalding. DD is only starting 2nd grade. She is a poor reader and a lot of her energy is spent decoding words and has very little comprehension. She is good at spelling. SO I firmly believe this is the best way to teach her to be a better reader. We just started learning the phonograms. Some she knows but I am reteaching b/c she needs to learn the sounds in the correct order and not associate them with words... a-apple etc. We are learning 10 a day until she hits her unknown. We will then review till she has mastered those and move on...... while spelling those phonograms from dictation. In the meantime this gives me time to learn the markings and other things we will eventually need for next year when she does the spelling notebook with rules. Give yourself some time and work it yourself. It will be interesting to see how my DD flourishes with this.
  17. We just started using Saxon 2. When we are finished with it I would like to move to R&S math for the mastery approach they use. Will I have trouble transitioning to R&S 3 when we finish Saxon 2?
  18. I was convinced by our behavioral therapist to send my DD -7 back to PS for "socialization". It was a rough year. She will not be going back. I should have trusted my judgement and not sent her back. She is already doing much better since she knows she doesn't have to go back. Ultimately it is your decision. You know your child best :)
