  1. Really!?? Well, that seals it!
  2. My son who applied and was waitlisted at Baylor just heard that he got in, with a significant enough amount of merit aid that we really need to think about it. Has anyone here attended Baylor? Or had a son/daughter attend Baylor? Can you tell me a little about your experience? Would you or your DD/DS pick that college again? Biggest downside/s? What were your/your DD/DS's plans for a major going in & what did you ultimately major in? Did your time at Baylor affect your direction and opportunities after graduation? I can read the basic facts online, but we've never visited Baylor or sat in on classes, so we don't have a real feel for it. I'd appreciate pretty much any BTDT thoughts. Thank you!
  3. But homeschoolers usually put the homeschool code, wherever they happen to take the test first, right? So, if NCAmusings DS took the test at the government site, he'd put the homeschool code and the scores would only go to NCAmusing's address, right? If her DS then took the test somewhere else, regardless of the original gov. site's insistence that he ONLY test at their site, her DS would put the homeschool code again and those scores from the second (or third or fourth) site would still only go to NCAmusing, wouldn't they? Maybe I'm missing something completely obvious. I can't imagine why it could possibly to the govt. site where else the student tests? They'll lose out on the testing fee. Maybe that's it?
  4. How would they even know if he took any other APs anywhere else?! Why would they even care? How could it possibly affect them if he did? I hate arbitrary rules.
  5. The student gets an AP Number wherever he takes his first AP. The number is used to get test scores later. There's usually a little booklet thing with a page of stickers w/ that number on it that he can peel and stick to whatever other APs he takes. One of our sites said that the student really only needs to know his number so he can write it in on the APs. My kids have always just brought the booklet they've received at their first test site to the other test sites and used the stickers.
  6. My daughter took Physics with Jetta (great class!!) in 9th grade and Chemistry w/ lab in 10th grade at our local hybrid (also a great class with an instructor w/ a Stanford Chem PhD). She would like to take AP Bio this coming year but hasn't had a high school bio class. She knows it will be a lot of memorization. Has anyone's student taken AP Bio without first taking a regular HS bio class? Thanks!
  7. When I was in college, the college matched roommates based on some questionnaire. Do most colleges have students find their own roommates now? If so, how do they go about doing that?
  8. I’ve heard that UC admissions for CS and engineering were really difficult this year. Was she applying for one of those majors? Back in the dark ages when I applied for colleges, my high school had everyone apply to at least one UC as a safety. Times have changed.
  9. With the merit aid, yes, we should be fine. Grinnell would be the biggest stretch, financially, but a couple of the options came out to be less than/equal to UC Irvine w/ the Regent's scholarship. We've been saving for college & don't qualify for need-based aid, but we'd have had to take out a bunch of loans to cover 12 years (4 years for each of three children) of college at full price.
  10. Thank you! It certainly is nice to be on this side of the admissions cycle. First semester was so stressful, while they were filling out the apps and then waiting to hear. I remember when the first acceptance came in, I said something about not having to worry anymore about not getting in somewhere. One of my boys asked, "Was that a real possibility?" I told them no, of course not. I would never have admitted that, yes, I was genuinely afraid that they might not get in anywhere. In hindsight, that wasn't realistic, but it sure seemed realistic at the time.
  11. Both DSs applied to most of the same schools, primarily LACs because they aren't positive about majors, because they both prefer smaller class size, and because we were looking for merit aid. Neither has made a firm commitment, yet. Accepted with merit aid: Hillsdale, Willamette, University of Puget Sound, Whitman, Grinnell, UC Irvine (Regents') Accepted: Bates, Colby, Bucknell, UC Santa Barbara Waitlisted: Williams, Middlebury, Baylor, Washington & Lee, WashU, UCLA Denied: Swarthmore, Pomoma, Claremont, UCSD
  12. Just heard my dd got a Gold on the Level 4/Poetry NLE! Congrats to all!
  13. The hs2coll (Homeschooling toward College) yahoo group has several transcript templates in its files section. We used the Dori Briggs one.
  14. We've been impressed with the level of feedback in TPS Eng classes as well! Had a similar experience with Cindy Lange's English classes. (She started her own Eng classes at Integritas, now.) Other than those, the amount and level of feedback on essays has been pretty dismally disappointing.
  15. Has your student taken the placement test, yet? Did TPS suggest English 2? My sons took TPS's Eng 3: Lit Survey course with L. Geno as freshmen. We all thought it was an excellent English course.
  16. Thanks for hunting down a list, Roadrunner. I don't see anything specifically about whether SAT subject scores or AP scores are included in "all SAT/ACT scores must be reported." Stanford, for example, says that SAT scores are required, but SAT subject scores are optional. Guess one just has to check for each school.
  17. That’s a good question. Personally, I don’t know if I’d have any qualms about cancelling a score, even after the fact, and not reporting it, but I haven’t btdt yet. Is there a list of colleges/universities that require all test scores? I’ve heard this, but I don’t think I came across it in any of the LACs or UCs my kids applied to. That may just be because it isn’t an issue for my boys. Might matter for my dd, though. That’s another question... Does “all test scores” include APs and SAT subject tests? ETA: Missed that it’s mostly highly selective colleges. It would still be interesting if there were a list somewhere.
  18. I’m having the same problem.
  19. Withholding SAT subject exam scores is much easier. You just click on the individual scores you want to include while you're filling out the online score report sending form.
  20. Score Cancellation Canceling your AP Exam score permanently deletes it — it cannot be reinstated at a later time. Scores may be canceled at any time. Once you request a cancellation, the exam will not be scored, and a score for that exam will never be available. (Archived scores cannot be canceled.) While there is no fee for this service, your exam fee is not refunded. To cancel your score, send this form to: AP Services P.O. Box 6671 Princeton, NJ 08541-6671 Fax: 610-290-8979 No fee. June 15, 2018 for scores not to be sent to the college indicated on your 2018 AP registration answer sheet. AP Score Cancellation Form (.pdf/520KB)
  21. There's info on the AP site here on Score Withholding and Score Cancellation. Score Withholding You can withhold one or more scores from the college specified on your registration answer sheet (the first answer sheet you filled out) or from any other college to which you want to send a score report. The score will be withheld from any future score reports sent to that particular college. A request to withhold a score does not permanently delete your score. You may later release the score to that college by mailing or faxing a signed written request to AP Services for Students. There is no charge to release scores. To withhold your score(s), send the AP Score Withholding Form to the address on the form based on your payment method. To release your score, send your signed written request to: AP Services P.O. Box 6671 Princeton, NJ 08541-6671 Fax: 610-290-8979 $10 per score per college to withhold, plus $15 per report for standard delivery or $25 per report for rush delivery to send the score report to the college. 22. Thanks for posting their response! wish there were still an “Ask Susan” thread here. I wonder if she’d say the same thing.
  23. Hm. It seems like the text is thinking of "was unknown" and "was unused" as verb phrases if they're diagrammed on the verb line. That would make sense if they were passive verbs. Then the question is.... Are they passive verbs? I'd say no. I always do a double take when diagramming passive verbs... Some of them seem like they could be diagrammed either as a verb phrase or as a verb + predicate adjective. I wonder if the trick in deciding which way to go (verb phrase or PredAdj) is to look at the second word and determine if it could actually be used as a verb.... So, for example, could one ever have a sentence in which the verb was "unknown" or "unused"? "He unknown lighting by means of gas"? Obviously not. But, could those words _ever_ be used as verbs? I can't think of any case in which they could be verbs. So, can they form a verb phrase? Doesn't a verb phrase consist of a helping verb/s + a main verb? Therefore, I would conclude that both "unknown" and "unused" are predicate adjectives in those sentences. Can you email customer service and ask? And then post here to let us know what their reasoning is either way? ETA: So here's an example where I would say there's a passive verb phrase: "The dog was abandoned by the side of the road." One could use "abandoned" as a main verb: "He abandoned the dog by the side of the road." So, because "abandon" can be used as a main verb, I'd say it could also be used as a verb in the passive voice. "Unknown" and "unused" could not be used as a main verb, I'm pretty sure. ETA2: Sorry! Didn't realize this post was so old!! But I'd still love to know the author's reasoning.
  24. We did LfC A & B in 4th & 5th and then Wheelock's in 7th & 8th. Wonderfully smooth transition. No issues at all. (We had also done R&S 3-6 by the time we started Wheelock's. I'm not sure if having that solid grammar foundation also contributed to the seamless transition between LfC & Wheelock's.) We had planned for my boys to do LfC C in 6th, but we dropped it after a couple of months. Having disliked LfC C with my oldest, we then planned for my daughter to go from LfC A&B to Latin Alive 1 (per CAP's recommendation). LA1 was unbearably tedious, and since we were doing it with an online class, we couldn't speed through the material she already knew. So, we dropped LA1 for her 6th grade year and she just went into Wheelock's with Lukeion in 7th.
