  1. The Earth Balance I recommended before does have soy in it, so not okay for dh but there is a canola margerine that is much helathier than the alternatives.
  2. Dh loves it on cereal, the boys like to drink it and I like it in my coffee. LOL. With four different sets of tastes, we keep all 3 milk substitutes on hand.
  3. Rice milk is a little more watery than cow's milk, but it's flavor is pretty bland. Almond milk is richer and a little thicker, but the flavor may clash with something like say cornbread.
  4. Being allergic to dairy does not mean being allergic to other animal's milk. Infants are not to have dairy, but they drink breastmilk, right? Each animal (humans included) make milk that is varied in compostion based on the needs of the offspring. I have a close friend who is highly allergic to dairy but has no problems with goat or sheep products.
  5. Is he unable to do soy, or just reluctanct to try it?
  6. We use soy milk, rice milk or almond milk to replace milk. I have know people to use goat's milk too and I have used some cheeses made with goat's milk. It really depends on what we are making which one we use. Most often I use soy milk and just pretend it's cow's milk. In baking and cooking, you really get used to it and don't notice the difference anymore. We use Earth Balance in place of butter, and we use pecorino romano cheese instead of parmesan - it's made with sheep's milk and tastes close enough to parmesan. And Tofutti has a cream cheese like spread that is really yummy.
  7. I think it really depends on the person. When I went to college at 17 I got a credit card for convenience and I never once put anything on it that I was unable to pay at the end of the month. I use credit cards even now for all of my purchases. I get great rewards and I pay in full every month, so I've never had to worry about interest rates, etc. I think having a credit card can be a temptation to some, but for those who were taught to spend money wisely, it can be a convenience.
  8. Some states require it or recommend it. I thought it would be nice to have a purpose in our name to keep us focused on our priorities.
  9. Sydney Alstrom's A Religious History of the American People is a fantastic resource. It begins with the European roots and the Reformation then tracks the development of all denominations as American history unfolds.
  10. so that would show all of my posts, not just the ones with new responses? i guess that's better than trying to remember and hunt through everything. I didn't know that function was there, so thanks for helping me. :001_smile:
  11. Just curious if you/your dc liked it and found it to be helpful. Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA
  12. He doesn't want to be Haman, huh? ;) If you were going to do Mordecai and really wanting something simple, just a robe and a fake gray/white beard. I always think of Mordecai as being older and wiser. I;m not much help am I? LOL
  13. On alll the other boards I have been a member of there is an option to display new responses to your posts. You click on it and it shows all threads you have posted in where people have responded and you have not read the responses yet. I haven't seen something like this here, and since it has never been an issue anywhere else, I keep forgetting to subscribe. :ack2: Am I just missing something, or am I gonna have to do something to help myself remember to subscribe every time I post?
  14. I don't know why I didn't think of gum. I always used to chew it when I needed to concentrate, and he is ADHD like his momma. LOL. the flower sounds like fun too.
  15. It's in a trash bag in the basement. I keep meaning to have it preserved. LOL. Maybe before my 10th anniversary I will get around to it.
  16. I'm a book freak. We have thousands. No joke. But I saved all my books from when I was younger. It has been great to read books to my boys that belonged to my mom when she was little. And I still borrow books from the library. Anything that I think we will only read once comes from the library. But I expect to get more use out of it, I buy it.
  17. Yes, he is. He loves math and is always adding numbers and finding patterns in his head. When preparing for K I found Saxon's placement test online and had him take it. He placed into 3 then, so we've been doing it for 2 years now, but he will be done and moving onto 54 next year. The hardest part in the begining was that he didn't read, so the lessons went very slowly with me having to read everything to him. Now the only frustration is that he does the work in his head and can't often remember how he did it when he has to recreate the number sentence. I always hated showing my work too - at least he comes by it naturally LOL
  18. Those types of questions are in Saxon Level 3, nearer to the end of the year.
  19. I have 2 votes: I agree with strider about the NLT. This version is much more accurate and still easy to read (of course I admit my bias, since I have ties to a few of the authors LOL). And I like the Children's ESV. It is the actual "grown-up" ESV but in larger print and with lots of pictures. It is recommended for ages 6-12.
  20. Inspiration and Incarnation: Evangelicals and the Problem of the Old Testament by Peter Enns Byzantium by Stephen Lawhead Total Truth by Nancy Pearcey Dealing with Disappointment by Elizabeth Crary Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  21. My dh works a lot too. And he does physical labor, so when he gets home he is exhausted. I happily do the cooking (I enjoy that part), cleaning and laundry, but he does help me clean on the weekends sometimes. He is also responsible for trash (yuck!) and home maintenance projects. Oh, and the boys do help me with a lot of the things that they can do. We make it a group project.
  22. Yep Kelli, it was you! :001_smile: Thanks. I gave you some rep back in return that day saying thank you, I hope you got it...
  23. Just last week my 6 yo son started putting the tip of his pencil in his mouth in between problems/questions on his school work. I keep reminding him to take it out of his mouth, or gently reaching over and touching his hand to pull it away from his mouth. But he gets annoyed that I am distracting him from thinking about his work. He says he can't think if he doesn't put the pencil in his mouth. Any suggestions? TIA!
