  1. I printed and laminated a small set for our school rooms, and am going to make my sister a set. Thanks!
  2. I am doing Right Start A with my pre-math daughter and Right Start B for my 1st grader. Maybe Right Start B would work for him? I have just started so I don't have much experience with it yet. I did meet the author and was impressed. Very hands on. (eta, I wrote this before the other replies were posted, just didn't get to hit send, so it seems like it could be a good fit!)
  3. We haven't done the lesson you are talking about yet(thanks for the heads up!), but this is what I did last year. I bought a cheap black plastic wall clock from walmart ($3) and wrote the minutes next to the hours with a white erase marker so she could see what the minutes were. She was only 6 then, but now I will let her write the minutes in herself and just play with the clock however she wants, change the time, etc.
  4. :iagree: My daughter at almost 7 was frustrated as well. Good idea, just better for older kids. Unless you want to sit with them and help them hold the string right, when I did that it was fun to wrap them to the music. We have only used the addition one.
  5. I just watched part of an Elementaty Spanish video last night and I had the same issues. Very low quality video when enlarged.
  6. [quote=Homeschool Mom in AZ; Parents who already have 2 or more kids can forget any kind of private adoption in the US unless they know the birthmother and she wants them to adopt her baby. If you were a birthmother would you choose an adoptive family that had a) no children b)children. Almost every birthmother (birthmothers are about 1% of women experiencing an unwanted pregnancy in the US) chooses a) the childless couple for obvious reasons. Just incase there are prospective adoptive parents reading this thread, this is not always true. I am sure there is a large percent of expectant parents that choose childless couples, but not all. Some want the adoptive family to have experience parenting and built in siblings. We had 2 bio children when we adopted domestically. After our home study was done it was 4 months until we were chosen by our daughters birth mom, and one more month until she was born. Our friends with 5 bio kids adopted at the same time, their adoption took 9 months. They were also picked one other time in there but she chose to parent. All this is to say you can adopt domestically if you already have children in you home.
  7. That is just what I need, thank you!!
  8. Darn, I was hoping to be able to have an "instant queue" for the first grader. It is still worth it though, I will just have to keep a list somewhere of what to watch next.
  9. Awesome, thanks for sharing! Just checked out your blog. We will be starting first right behind you, although you will be about 5 weeks ahead, lucky duck. Will be checking your blog for tips so keep it up!
  10. This looks great! I have been planning of buying DS plus, but this is much more affordable. Does anyone know what is missing in the regular DS that you get with DS Plus? What I know I want for sure is Magic School Bus and Elementary Spanish.
  11. As I was looking online tonight, I ran across a free sample of Draw Write Now. I remember someone asking about the series last week. This would be a way to try it out before purchasing a whole book. http://www.drawyourworld.com/ The lesson is on drawing swans. We are in the middle of listening to the Trumpet of the Swans, so this is perfect timing!
  12. These are not for getting them together, but I bought AAS from Sonlight because they have free shipping over 25. Then I bought RS from the actual company because they are only one state away and offer free shipping over 225. I had to get 2 levels anyway.
  13. Did you find any? I didn't look yet. Now I am rethinking it and I actually need wider than wide rule. I bought some 3rd grade paper from the school supply store, but it is thin and junky too. I would like to find paper like is in the WWE workbook. Thick and smooth. Maybe buy heavy printer paper and print my own just for the note booking? That sounds like a pain.
  14. When I was in high school I had a favorite type of notebook. The paper was thick and smooth. We are starting our history binder and need a direction to look for nice thick wide lined, 3 hole punched paper. I have not looked yet, so maybe it is easy to find. All we have had so far is thin and cheap. Thanks!
  15. I just received an email that this book shipped to me from Amazon! :bigear:
  16. I have not used it, but we looked at it at a convention. We decided that Level one was too easy for our almost 7 year old. This is because she covered the topics in NL Level one in Public school Kindergarten last year. The people at NL are very helpful if you email them they can help place them in a level.
  17. Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia I think this might be the one people are referring to. http://www.amazon.com/Usborne-Encyclopedia-History-Internet-Linked/dp/1409519074/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1311184609&sr=1-8
  18. My daughter likes Ralph Masiellos books. He even has one on Egypt. Check at the library, ours has them.
  19. Does anyone have a Sonlight coupon code that they aren't planning on using?? Pretty please, with a cherry on top! Rebecca
  20. Are some rods more square? My white ones are a perfect square. I can tell the others were cut off a longer piece and were squished while they were cut. It bugs me!! If it matters I bought the 74 pack from Amazon that comes in a box with a clear window on the front.
  21. This was a great thread to read though. 12 pages if you are interested in this topic.
  22. Thank you for the link. I will read it tonight. So, since you did both RS and Miquon, do you think together they are confusing for the child at all? Are they complementing or does it get to be too many concepts?
  23. This is from the Rightstart website. What do you think? I was planning on doing RS and a small bit of Miquon or C Rod math labs. Maybe it will be too confusing and it is better to just stick with RS? * Does RightStart Mathematics use colored rods? Researchers have found a number of problems with colored rods, where numbers 1-10 are represented by increasing lengths each in a different color. For young children each rod is a "one"; they do not understand why a rod twice as long is called a "two." Another problem is that 1 out of 12 children has some color deficiency and cannot see ten different colors. A more serious limitation of rods 6-10 is that they cannot be visualized, or seen in the mind, because they are not grouped in fives. Try to imagine 8 apples in a row without any grouping--virtually impossible. Now imagine 5 apples as red and 3 as green--this you probably can do. The Romans grouped in fives (8 as VIII), and composers used two groups of five lines for writing music. The purpose of a manipulative is not only to see the concept, but to help the learner construct a mental model, for example, to learn the facts. Visual models are quicker to recall than reciting a rhyme. Note also that adding two rods does not immediately give the sum. Any concept that can be taught with colored rods can be taught with the AL abacus without the bother of little pieces.
