  1. I'm not sure what state you are in, but I used to be a case manager for DCS in TN. In our state, if the birthmom had already lost parental rights on 7 children, we would have been able to go ahead and pursue termination of rights to the baby just on that alone. We wouldn't have to wait for her to get out of jail to have a chance to prove whether or not she could parent. You should probably check with DCS and see if that is the case in this situtation or not.
  2. My son is 3 (will be 4 in March) and we started homeschooling this past July. We are using Little Hands Towards Heaven from Heart of Dakota. We absolutely love it and are having tons of fun! I'm excited about many more years of homeschooling.
  3. We are using Little Hands Towards Heaven and absolutely love it! My blog is http://cherish-each-moment.blogspot.com
  4. I just showed these to my hubby and he loved them! He has a degree in Chemistry with a minor in biology. He wants to get some to take to his office!
  5. My son is 3 1/2 and we are using Heart of Dakota's Little Hands towards Heaven. It is very gentle and he loves it!
  6. Completely agreeing with this! I understand what you're saying. I know people with clutter too. But, you can have a cluttered home and still clean. The stuff on this show was not clutter. There were egg shells and opened cans in the kitchen that had never been thrown away, a cat litter box from over a year ago that had never been dumped out, the shower and toilet hadn't been cleaned in months, etc. Those are things that can be taken care of even if your house is cluttered.
  7. Seconding the recommendation for Love and Respect. I think the author is Emerson Eggerichs
  8. Has anyone watched this? It is on Style network. I like to watch Clean House and see them help the families declutter and then makeover their rooms. This winner of the Messiest Home is just nasty! It's not a clutter problem it's just gross. They have a closet with a used litter box in it but they have both said they haven't had a cat in 2 years. They also admitted that they haven't cleaned their bathroom in months and the wife said she does her best not to touch the walls when she bathes. Ok, if you're scared to bathe in your own shower, shouldn't you clean it? I know my house is not the cleanest in the world, but this is just downright disgusting. If you haven't seen it, you can probably see pics or video on Style's website www.mystyle.com
  9. Heart of Dakota ties everything together like that but it only goes up to 5th grade right now. I know she has plans to have guides all the way through middle school.
  10. We will be using Heart of Dakota's Little Hands Towards Heaven. DS is only 3 so I don't have a lot of goals other than getting into some kind of routine and having a lot of fun with him.
  11. Sounds like she's had a lot of fun this week at camp!
  12. Hi! I've been lurking here for awhile but I don't think I've posted an introduction. My name is Stephanie and I have been married to my DH for 10 years. We have a son, Samuel, who is 3 years old that we adopted domestically at birth. Homeschooling is something that God has been speaking to me about for some time and after much prayer and research, DH and I have decided that we are going to give it a try at least through elementary school and then we'll reevaluate. I am a SAHM and Samuel does well with a lot of structure so we have decided to go ahead and start doing some preschool activities with him. We have just started using Little Hands Towards Heaven and we absolutely love it! Samuel has so much fun and can't wait to "do school" each day. I look forward to getting to know everyone here!
  13. I agree it's the company's decision. When we moved into our house it was brand new so we had to have them come out and run cable to all the rooms. We told them we only wanted basic cable. The worker said he didn't have the part he needed to block the extra channels (this was before digital cable) and he would be back later that week to finish the job. Eight years later we were still getting all the channels at the basic cable price. We called several times in the beginning to let them know and no one ever came back out. We also had workers at our house at various times over the year to fix cable problems and they always left it even when we told them.
  14. I have a degree in Sociology and worked as a case manager for Dept of Children's Services. I started out as a foster parent case manager -- training foster parents, doing homestudies, making placements. I also supervised visitations. Later, I changed positions and worked with teens aging out of foster care -- helping them create a budget, find employment and housing, letting them know about educational options and helping them apply for grants, scholarships, etc. Some people get a BS in Sociology and then go on to get a Masters in SW.
  15. We've started using Evan-Moor thematic units My son loves them and we are having lots of fun. They are unit studies for PreK-K. Each book has 5 units and we take about a week to do each unit. Each one has a story, math and language arts worksheets, a craft project, dramatic play or a song, a center activity (my son loves these games), and a recipe. We've been checking out books from the library each week to have extra reading on the subject and it's been working well. If you don't want to buy each book, you can go to www.teacherfilebox.com For $9.99 a month, you have access to all the evan-moor titles to print as much as you want.
  16. Also, if you go to the Evan-Moor website, there is a link to www.TeacherFileBox.com You can do a 1 month free trial for 99 cents and then it is $9.99 a month or $99 for a year membership. They have the full text from all their books available for you to print off as needed.
  17. Hi everyone! I joined the forums awhile back and have been reading but realized I never introduced myself. My name is Stephanie and I have a 3 year old son, Samuel, that I will be homeschooling. I had planned on not starting anything till he was 4 but he has been really excited and wanting to do something so I we've started doing some theme units from Evan-Moor which he is loving! We add library book about the topic and just take our time. He's also been wanting to learn letter and their sounds so we're also using Jumbo Fun with the Alphabet I'm still researching and trying to decide what we will do long term. I'm mostly leaning towards Sonlight, but I also love TOG so we'll see what happens over the next few years. I look forward to getting to know everyone!
  18. I haven't personally used any of these studies but I used to live near Precept and worked at many of their conferences. I know that Kay and Janna usually recommend starting with Wrong Way Jonah. It's supposed to be the easiest. How to Study the Bible for Yourself is one of the hardest. If you call the Precept bookstore, they will be more than happy to offer suggestions based on your child's age.
  19. Cades Cove is about an hour from Pigeon Forge and is beautiful! It's a state park that has an 11 mile driving loop through the park with stops along the way at old homesteads, churches, etc. You can also usually see deer and sometimes bears during the drive.
  20. I'm in TN too--South Knoxville to be exact. This is my first post on the forum. I have a 3 year old DS that I am going to be homeschooling in a few years.
