:bigear: I am curious about this. I wonder if ds would be bored to tears. CC is only 4 hours with many different topics. 3 full days on geography seems like overkill.

So should I expect 10 hours of DVDs for level 1....or more?

How many hours of DVDs are included?

Book/ audio book list for rising first grade

My son will be starting first grade at the local public school. He is in a classical Christian school this school year. I have plan as far as read alouds, but I have used read along audiobooks. I would guess ds is reading at a 3rd grade level. 1. Can you send me some suggestions for audiobook/ book companions? I am going to look for them at the library. 2. What level book should I start with ds? Should I go up a level or two? 3. Should I get high interest books? Classics? Or a combination? 4. How much time a day should I have him use read along audiobooks ( on top of mom reading aloud and kid read aloud)? 5. Any advice from the literacy enthusiasts at hive mind? 6. What is your routine with audiobook/book combo? Ideas?

Standardized test success/bust & curriculum

Amazing! I am glad that you found something that works! -
Ok, I know that standardized testing may not be the best indicator of mastery of school subjects (or that you found the Perfect curriculum.) Some kids test well.....and some do not. I just thought this would make an interesting thread. Can you share dc standardized test score (or indicate if they tested well) and the curriculum that coincided with the subject? Do you think that the curriculum just helped the child to test well( without mastery or true understanding)? Any curriculum seem like a complete bust after getting dc test scores?

Best educational apps for ipad?

My 4 year old will be in CC next school year. I am wondering whether I should add SOTW to coincide with the history covered during CC. I am thinking that I can just play the CDs at home while she is playing. There is a group from CC that will get together once a week to do the activities that coincide with the book. Would the activities in the SOTW book be too much for a 4 year old? I am not going to buy the AG, but just participate in the activities with CC kids once a week. Thoughts?

My auditory learner is just like that. My visual learner...not so much.

For the second grader, I would look into Phonics Road or IEW pal writing and reading for language arts. What about Veritas or Tapestry of Grace for history? If you want a nice box of curriculum, check out Timberdoodle. I love some of the selections.

What is your, "What's The Big Deal?" curriculum?

Ok, please don't throw anything at me::leaving: Sonlight: expensive list of books with little memorable results (for kids) AAS: too expensive $300+ for a spelling program 1-7 AAR: no I am not paying for it even if it has a puppet. I can buy you one for $5. There are so many more effective programs that are complete for so much less HOD: I don't get it. -
I just finished reading Dumbing Us Down today. I read a startling statistic in the book that homeschooled children are 5 to 10 years ahead of their peers in public schools. The statistic is not documented (no reference). Do you know where I can find that statistic? Just seems too general. Btw, I am not a fan of the book. IMO, it should have been a booklet. How many times and ways can you say public schools suck? Also, I had a conversation with one of my friend's moms. She mentioned that the United States is one of the only countries in the world that believes that we should wait until our child is 6-7 years old to teach children to read. That most countries start teaching their children to read at 2-3 years of age (maybe parents do this?) I am a huge early literacy mom, but I was wondering whether you know where that information is found. I did not want to "call her out" because I really like my friend.:tongue_smilie:

What is your favorite ipad app (appropriate for 6 year old) for learning spanish? I am looking for something to broaden my sons vocabulary and support giving him confidence in everyday conversation. He is exposed to Spanish (bilingual dad and grandparents). Just looking for an additional resource. Hey, if you know of a great app for adults, pass that along as well. I am also trying to learn Spanish.

Thank you for your responses. I think I might add Saxon K to my preschool plan if it is only 15 minutes.
