  1. Thank you! We had a CBC, metabolic panel, ck test, other tests I am not sure of and a microarray genetic test. We will have an MRI in January. What is the name of the unofficial metabolic test? What type of treatment has really helped your child? We will be getting OT, PT and ST. Any advice on how I can help her in this time of waiting? What do you plan on doing for school/homeschool for your 3.5 year old? Any threads or information on how to help a child's development with the challenges that they face?
  2. I am interested in going to a naturopath for my 4 year old. She has been diagnosed with mild cerebellar ataxia (uncoordinated muscles), mild low tone, sensory issues and a speech delay (1 year). She can run, walk, jump etc. She would just be considered "clumsy" and a weak core. Drs think there is an underlying condition. She has had 1001 blood tests and will have an MRI. Only the ck test came out mildly elevated (120 over normal) which the doctor stated is "not clinically concerning". All of this to say, I am considering taking her to a naturopath to go along side her ped. Neurologist, OT, PT and ST. Can you tell me about your experience? What is your opinion about naturopaths- quack, genius or a help? Any condition that they found before a medical doctor? Thanks!
  3. Any advice from veteran homeschoolers/after schoolers on helping a child to become fluent in math? Should I drill and kill with basic math facts? Do math daily? Manipulatives? Dice games? Curriculum? My son is in 1st grade, and I really want him to get him off to the right start. He is in public school this year, and I am not sure about the quality of his math instruction. Your help is greatly appreciated.

  5. My daughter is adorable and very curious (sounds like the beginning of Curious George). She is 4 years old. She has always "gotten into everything." I kept telling myself that she would grow out of this, but I am thinking this might be here to stay. Her fine motor skills are really weak probably because I did not give her markers, paint or crayons because it would end up everywhere. Now I am really concerned about her fine motor skills. I give her a tray filled with washable markers, stickers, washable glitter glue, scissors, glue stick, paper of different colors and tell her to have fun. I do set some ground rules: 1. no cutting hair or clothes 2. Do not color yourself or your clothing 3. Do not color the table. She has violated every time 1 of these no-nos since I started the craft tray. I am pretty frustrated. Normally I would take the supplies away since she misused them, but she needs the fine motor practice. She refuses to color or do anything academic. Should I nip this in the bud or relax...she's only four...the preschool years need to be messy? I am concerned enough about fine motor skills that I am considering getting her evaluated for dysgraphia. ADVICE PLEASE :tongue_smilie:
  6. Which chapter of the Bible would you want your children to know before they go to college/move out? Just thought this would be an interesting thread.:)
  7. Me! Me!:hurray: Cabreban@hotmail.com Thank you!
  8. :bigear: wondering about this as well....
  9. I have seen great reviews with Rod & Staff preschool ABC program. Lots of coloring, pasting, cutting as well as critical thinking, preschool skills etc.
  10. Thank you! 30-35 hours for my child who might outgrow or refuse the curriculum does not seem worth it. I think Rod and Staff preschool books + a few printables from of LOTW on Confession of a homeschoolers will suffice ( along with Montessori activities, CC, Saxon K math and OPGTR).
  11. I cannot tell you how many times I have come close to buying Letter of the Week from Confessions of a Homeschooler. What stops me EVERY TIME is the thought that I have to get this curriculum (that has over 1400 pages possible) printed. Oh and did I mention having a thousand pages :) Any advice and tips for printing this curriculum? How did you make it work? How did you stay organized? Print, laminate and cut?
  12. I am considering the better binder 8.5 x 5.5 with sheet protectors instead of hole punching.
  13. I think I want to get a 5.5 x 8.5 binder for my CC history timeline cards. I am hesitant to buy a binder sight unseen. If you have these cards, can you tell me which binder you purchased? Do you like it? Do you think I will be fine to just add a ring to the bottom of the cards?
  14. If you were to pick 1 or 2 must-read books on Montessori education for 3-6 year old which books would you pick? I would love to be able to download the book on my iPad. What would be the top toys/ activities that you would recommend to buy or make for a 3-4 year old? Any tips, tricks or advice on a homeschool Montessori education?

  16. Any advice on how to save money while adopting? My sil and bil are looking into adopting. They are looking for ways to save (special needs, local adoptions, biracial, tax credits etc.) Just thought some of the parents on Hive Mind might have some experience. Any other advice on what to avoid? Lessons learners etc?
  17. Salsa on GPB My daughter begs for this! It is full immersion and FREE! If you bought all of the DVDs, it would cost around $1000. There is a lot of research that went into the development of this show.
  18. The school my son will attends told me that very few pass the Cogat ( even if they are gifted) because most kids do not test well at that age. Most pass the test around 3rd grade because they are better test takers.
  19. Would think-a- minutes a-1 be too hard for a rising first grader? The book states that it is for 2nd-3rd graders.
  20. My son will be entering 1st grade next year. I would really like for him to be apart of Target (the gifted program) at our local public school. His kindergarten teacher ( at his classical Christian school) said she would suggest that he be part of any advanced programs in 1 st grade. He is smart but I really do not think he would be considered gifted. I am considering getting the Cogat bundle from Critical Thinking Co. to prepare him for the test in September. Here are the contents with space if anyone wants to add less expensive options (prufrock etc): The critical thinking co. = Less expensive alternative -Mind Benders® Book 2.... -Can You Find Me? K-1...... -Building Thinking Skills® Primary".......... -Mathematical Reasoning™ Level B".......... -Math Analogies Beginning.................. -Thinking Skills for Tests Workbook..... -Thinking Skills for Tests Guide............ Any experience with these books? Are they worth the time? Would the Developing the Early Learner books be beneficial? I figure it is worth a try. If he does not get accepted to Target, he will at least get some good practice with critical thinking. I know that moms have strong feeling about prep for tests like this....please don't throw any rocks. :leaving: Any equivalent books that can be recommended with prufrock? Would the Developing the Early Learner books work for any of this?
