  1. My daughter is a third grader by definition and today is our first official day homeschooling. She is a struggling reader and therefore does not enjoy it. She knows, however, that it is a necessity. We are finishing up Dancing Bears C and she has made great strides. How often should I have her read aloud and on her own daily? I read to both her and her brother every evening.
  2. We used RightStart and recently switched to CLE. My daughter who has struggled in the past is thriving with it. It gives her the copious amounts of daily review that she needs. RightStart just was not working well for her although I think it is a wonderful program. Good luck with your decision.
  3. For those of you that use LOE Essentials, do you teach the grammar portion or use another program? I haven't seen much discussion on that aspect of the curriculum and am looking for feedback. I will be starting LOE in a few weeks and had purchased FLL3 prior and was set on using it but am thinking of shelving it and using LOE in its entirety. Any thoughts?
  4. If my daughter didn't need the spiral approach of CLE which she truly does, I would also consider Horizons.
  5. I decided to change paths and will be using LOE Essentials with my 8 yr. old daughter this year. I am trying to determine how to break the lessons down. For those of you that use it, do you utilize it as recommended or break a lesson down over the course of several days? Do you use all of the components or just some? How do you make it work for you? Thank you for sharing.
  6. Also, crisps for potato chips and I think bathing costume was used once. There are a few words but nothing excessive in my opinion.
  7. Mum for mom is really all that stands out in my mind. My daughter has made tremendous progress using Dancing Bears Fast Track. I picked it back up in mid March (we had completed about half prior) and her Star reading test level went from PP which is pre primer to 2.4 when administered in May.
  8. I actually purchased LOE Essentials just today. I was blessed to find it used. I am very excited to use it with my daughter and am glad to know that you were able to view it and are impressed with it. And for the record, my little girl is 8......today is her birthday! Thank you for all your help!
  9. My daughter would choose to do little more than draw all day if she could. She loves art all the way around but drawing is by far her favorite. I am looking for a program easy to implement and not too tedious as she had just turned 8. Thank you for your recommendations.
  10. I don't know if it varies by state but I know that in my home state where I adopted homeschooling is not an option until the adoption is finalized. That can take a very long time. Have you had a home study done yet? If all other criteria has been met and you are nearing the adoption process, I think, as Hunter stated, it would depend on a many different factors. Best of luck to you!
  11. I am doing CLE2 with my daughter right now. I am remediating her. For her, it is a god send but that is because she needs constant review and there is a LOT of it. I have never seen BJU lower level mathematics but I think if she is doing well with a mastery program she may tire of the repetition of CLE.
  12. I just started AAS 1 with my daughter who will basically be repeating 2nd grade at home. I own level one AAS manual, the tiles and the cards. I have been looking at LOE Essentials and really like what I see and am wondering if I should just switch over now and make the investment upfront or continue through the levels of AAS. I am not even sure how many levels there are of AAS and how many levels equate to LOE Essentials. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.
  13. I will be homeschooling in the fall. My daughter will be a rising third grader but we will be doing lots of remedial work. I am trying to get an idea of how to schedule our days. I would appreciate seeing what others do from start to finish. Thank you for sharing.
  14. We tried it with my son for 6th grade. He really disliked it. It was a complete bomb here. He simply could not sit through lessons all day and became bored and turned off to homeschooling. I would maybe try a class or two at most, especially for such a young child.
  15. Bringing my rising third grade daughter home from PS and remediating with: LA: WWE1, FLL3, AAS, finishing up Dancing Bears 3 (not sure from there) Math: CLE2 and will hopefully move into CLE3 Science: RSO Life 1 I still need to add in either history or geography and art since that is her passion.
  16. Thank you for all the great suggestions. We are moving on and will incorporate all the suggestions provided. I don't know what I would do without these forums.
  17. I am remediating my daughter with RSA and CLE2. She is having a terrible time grasping time and money. Should I just move on a bit and come back to it or camp out? She can tell time some of the time to the quarter/half and hour but asking anything else of her stumps her. With money, she has a hard time counting change unless the coins are the same and writing amounts correctly. She will know it one day and three days later all is lost.
  18. Thank you so much. It truly is heartwarming to have her ask to read to me instead of crying every time I bring out her reading book. I must say as crazy as the stories are, Dancing Bears has done wonders for her. I am so thankful. Thank you for all the suggestions. Off to the library we go!
  19. After finishing Dancing Bears A/B, my daughter is finally beginning to choose to read on her own. She loves Amelia Bedelia. She is comfortable at that reading level for now. She will be 8 in June and has come a very long way. Suggestions?
  20. I am having such a hard time deciding. I used R&S for my son when he was in middle school and loved it but that was a while back. I intend to use WWE for writing. For those of you that love either, why one over the other? Pros/cons, things you loved, disliked? Please help me decide. My daughter will be a rising 3rd grader but I may use a level behind because she is coming out of PS and needs a lot of remediation. Thank you.
  21. Thank you. I had actually looked at this awhile back and loved it but I wasn't sure if it would help her enough where writing is concerned. Is this something I would use along with a separate writing program?
  22. Well, the good news is I have some time to think about it. Thank you for your input. I am off to look at FLL samples now.
  23. Her handwriting is excellent. She definitely encounters struggles with sentence formation as indicated above. I personally am just attracted to ELTL. I was going to have her work with level 2. I am not sure if FLL3 would be over her head. I definitely don't think she could handle WWE2.
