  1. That is a great plan. Thank you. She is feeling successful and I am seeing her become more confident reading Amelia Bedelia. It is nice to see. I have one more question for Rose or anyone else who would like to respond. Do you feel that WWE and ELTL (Lauguagr Lessons through Literature) would be redundant? I am worried about the fact that FLL is so scripted? Is there any written work? She seems to like worksheets.
  2. Thank you again for the replies. To answer a few questions, my daughter struggles all the way around. Her reading has greatly improved since starting DB Fast Track but she is still choppy and often misreads silent e words. Her comprehension is poor. For instance, she was asked in her math book we are using to remediate her to draw a pair of apples in a bowl and originally she drew four. It wasn't because she doesn't know what a pair is but because she was unsure of what was being asked of her. I do believe after looking at the placement test that the narration exercises may be too difficult in WWE2. I will probably take a closer look at WWE1. I read to her every night and she is starting to choose books to read to me. Her current read a loud is Amelia Bedelia. How much should I challenge her with reading? Should I continue to keep it very light or encourage her to choose more challenging books? Any book suggestions for me? Thank you again for all the hand holding. Lisa
  3. I can't thank you enough, Rose. Truly! I feel so much better already. Thank you for your generosity.
  4. Thank you again for your reply. ELTL is English Lessons through Literature. I am not sure if using it along with WWE would be too repetitive. If not FLL do you have any other suggestions for me?
  5. Thank you so much for your reply. Should I use a grammar program along with AAS and WWE2? How about FLL and if so, what level would you suggest? I was originally considering ELTL but I am rethinking my choices now. Thoughts?
  6. I am bringing my daughter home to school in the fall. She will technically be a third grader. She is very behind and is in the midst of being evaluated privately. Here is a story she wrote tonight on her own. :( The Tiger Cat and the Scunk Dog Once ther wus a Tiger cat she wus rich and famise (famous) and her frind wus pur (poor) so she gave him mune (money). One day the Tiger Cat smeld the Dog he smeld bad she sed Knwe (no) wunder yie (why) you are cold scunk Dog you smel blad (bad) you ned (need) to take a bath then you will smel good so he tok a bath and he smeld good. Where do I begin? She is coming along in reading but none of it is translating to spelling. I was waiting until I finished Dancing Bears Fast Track with her (10 lessons) left and then thought I would start AAS with her since I already have it. Should I take a different approach? I am at a total loss. How do I help her? And to think they were going to promote her to third grade!! Thank you for your suggestions, Lisa
  7. I am currently using DB FT to remediate my almost 8 year old daughter. Even though I was uncertain after looking at the online sample, I purchased the curriculum based on the positive reviews. I am beyond thrilled at the progress that she has made. She has come so far that she is actually bringing books to read to me. Two months ago she never would have had the desire or confidence to do so. She is beginning to enjoy reading. I am so thankful to have found this program. I hope it works well for your dc.
  8. My daughter is a hands on learner and loves arts and crafts. I will be bringing her home next year for third grade. I am looking to explore curricula that is hands on and that will be fun for her. She will be eight in June but is a very young eight and is struggling academically (math and reading). I will be using RS B with her and will continue with Dancing Bears C but am undecided on other subjects. I would love project based suggestions. As always, thank you! Lisa
  9. Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. I have an appointment next with with a psychologist and I feel prepared now. I appreciate your support.
  10. Thank you ladies so much for your generous replies. Since this is all new to me, I do have a question for those of you who have been there. What testing is imperative? What are some questions I should be asking? I live in a small town in east Tennessee and my teenager is currently seeing a therapist. I spoke to her yesterday and she said she does provide psychoeducational evaluations. What questions did you ask of your provider regarding her educational background and experience with testing. I am also in close proximity to larger towns with many more doctors and resources. I guess what I am trying to determine is if she is the best qualified to perform the evaluation or if I should do more research. Her fee is reasonable and that is a consideration since I will be paying for it although it is not the overall deciding factor.
  11. I have recently posted about my daughter who is struggling in second grade public school. She will be 8 in June and was recently moved into RTI tier 3 (90 minutes of one on one for reading and math). I have met with her teacher and requested testing. She believes she needs to be tested as well but has informed me as has her principal that it probably will not occur until after the beginning of next school year. She scored in 10th percentile for reading and math in her last STAR Assessment. I have been afterschooling her and it has been very enlightening. I truly believe that I am dealing with a learning disability of some sort. Her school is ready to promote her to 3rd grade and there is no way she is capable in my opinion and I will be homeschooling her. I will be meeting with her pediatrician to discuss my concerns but in the interim I wanted to list some of the things we are dealing with to see if anyone has some insight to offer. She struggles with math. She does not know her addition facts to ten proficiently in spite of studying them and using xtramath daily. She cannot grasp before and after in relation to numbers. She cannot recognize without counting the bars of the abacus that there are 10-ten on it or 100 beads overall even though we have drilled this for two months. We are currently using Right Start A and it seems like the whole 1-ten, 2-ten method of teaching is throwing her for a loop. She seemed to be fine with it initially but now as we progress past 100 she cannot put it together. She cannot see patterns in math equations (example, 1+a number always equals a number higher). She cannot count or make basic change (when asked to make change for a $10 after receiving $8 she handed a $20). Her rote memory is very poor. There are many other issues but I am having trouble putting them into words. With LA, she is below grade level in reading but has made significant progress with Dancing Bears Fast Track. Unfortunately, none of it has transferred over to her spelling. We can study the blend oo and she can read the word food easily but 20 minutes later she would spell it fud. She can read a word in text and the same word can be the line below and she cannot recall it. She has a terrible time with basic spelling. She can do an exercise with silent "E" with words lined up in a row and she will spell tale, pale, sale and whal (she does not recognize the pattern) and we have drilled it dozens of times. Her comprehension is poor and her thought process (I am sure there is a better way to express what I am trying to say) is immature. For instance, she read a passage about forests and was asked to tell whether she preferred leafy trees (changing leaves) or pine trees and why. Her answer was leafy trees because they have cute animals. There was nothing in the passage that even mentioned animals. Her sibling, 18 days her junior (they are adopted), is doing well. He is about average in math and above average in relation to his peers. The differences between them both cannot be missed. She was born drug free and her mother tested negative throughout her pregnancy. She is a precious angel and I want to help her be the best she can be. It breaks my heart to see her work so hard and become so frustrated. It is stressful to say the very least. I truly appreciate any thoughts, ideas or support you can lend. Thank you for reading if you have made it this far.
  12. I pretty much ignore the check marks. If my daughter sounds out a letter or blend incorrectly, I back up until she gets it right and then proceed. It has worked fine for us and she is progressing.
  13. My daughter will be 8 in June. We are using Dancing Bears Fast Track and I have seen improvement. I am having her do a few pages a day and now she is actually choosing more challenging books to read. She is nowhere near fluent but we are getting there and like alisoncooks, we will just keep plugging away.
  14. Thank you so much, my3girls. I am happy to hear your daughter is doing so well. I forgot all about BrainPop. Thanks for the reminder.
  15. Thank you so much for the encouragement, especially that last sentence. I am putting that on a note card for my bathroom mirror.
  16. Thank you both so much. I guess I need to relax and worry less about getting her caught up vs. getting her proficient. My son is 18 days her junior (both are adopted) and it is hard not to compare and be concerned.
  17. Thank you for the reply. It is helpful. With regard to her reading, it is choppy and not on grade level. She reads slowly and that impacts her comprehension greatly. She has shown some recent progress lately.
  18. I posted recently about my 2nd grade daughter who is currently attending public school. She is struggling all the way around and has just been placed in RTI level 3 at school. I have requested that she be tested by the school board but they are not confident that they will get her in before the end of the year. She scored in the 10th percentile in reading and math on the Star Assessment. As a result, my husband and I have decided to homeschool her next year. Right now, I am after schooling her using RS-A and Dancing Bears Fast Track and using xtramath for math facts. She is showing some progress. My plan is to continue with RSB and finish Dancing Bears over the summer. I am also using Elizabeth's phonics program. I am in the process of researching for the upcoming school year. I know I will continue with RS for her and am going to do some gentle US History but other than that I am not sure. What about grammar, spelling, writing? Her spelling is very poor. The sentence she composed for her vocabulary word "confused" this past week was, I'm confused wut she sed. I have AAS on hand but LOE is intriguing. What about writing? WWW1,EIW, copywork? I know our year will be hard because we have a lot to overcome. She is easy to work with but does get discouraged and needs a lot of encouragement. She loves art and I would love to incorporate that into our week as well so she can have a fun outlet. Any thoughts on HAS? Some gentle science suggestions would be great as well. As a teacher, I do prefer open and go and lots of hand holding. I truly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions and will be happy to answer any questions to provide clarity of the above ramblings. Thank you.
  19. Thank you for your reply. She does not enjoy using the cursor during regular reading time but I think I will incorporate it. It does seem to make a difference. Thank you for the reply.
  20. She definitely cannot add/subtract double digits in her head. I do not have the Math Games book either. Do you think that would be sufficient to get her up to speed on that skill?
  21. My daughter is using Fast Track A/B and is doing very well in the book itself. She still however is having a lot of trouble transferring what she is learning to other texts. How is your child(ren) doing in this area? How long did it take to click? Do you use the cursor when you read regular books?
  22. I have posted just recently about my struggling second grade daughter who is in public school. Currently, I am using RightStart A with her as a review because it is what I had on hand. (I used it with her and her brother when they were in K). With some aspects she does really well and other things she struggles. She had an issue yesterday with before and after. She also gets caught up counting coins. However, she can add 4 digits numbers with carrying and knows place value to 1,000. I want to continue with RS with her as she works well with the abacus and seems to enjoy the program. However, when I look at level B it seems that at least half of the book will be nothing but review of what she is already proficient in. Should I just skip it and go straight to C? She took the placement test for RS and it suggested level C. She still does not have her math facts in place but we are working on them. Thank you for your comments and suggestions.
