  1. I can complete relate to too "flowery". My daughter's vocabulary is weak and anything other than straightforward tends to trip her up. I will look at Remedia. Thank you for the link.
  2. When I ask her to tell the story back to me, I get a lot of um's. I have tried reviewing the questions with her beforehand but I think it is too much for her to recall at once. Even when I break it down into pieces, she struggles. I am going to try your suggestion of Aesop's Fables on Monday and see what I can get out of her. Thank you so very much for your suggestions.
  3. Thank you, ladies, for all the suggestions. I am working through exploring them all. I really like the look of Write Shop Primary so far. I think she may benefit from something that basic.
  4. The problem she has with WWE is that she cannot answer the questions. She becomes very frustrated. She can do copywork without any issues but struggles with being able to formulate a coherent sentence as it relates to the passage. I break the passage down substantially and most often she still cannot answer the questions.
  5. I am looking for a writing program for my 9yo. She has CAPD so she struggles with formulating her thoughts and getting them down on paper. We have tried WWE but even level 1 is too difficult. I think we really need to work on sentences. Writing is definitely not my strong suit so I would like something to follow. Is there a workbook or program that you would recommend that starts with solidifying sentences and moves gently in paragraphs? We already use a who/what/where/when chart and do copywork daily but I feel she is ready for a little more. Thank you.
  6. We have done little to no science as we are dealing with CAPD however I think my daughter is ready and is very excited about adding science into our homeschool. Mom, not so much! Here is what I am looking for. Open and go, no brainer for me with some experiments thrown in. Her comprehension and writing skills are delayed due to her CAPD. She is working at probably mid third grade level. We are looking for a secular program. Thank you.
  7. I fully understand your feelings. I am such an animal lover. I hope your baby heals. Prayers!
  8. Thank you so much for the suggestions and links.
  9. My daughter is currently using CLE 3 for math. She has CAPD and struggles with almost every single word problem. I try to draw them out for her, use manipulatives, etc. but 70% of the time it does not compute. Is there a workbook that you can recommend that breaks down the problems visually? Would Singapore starting at a low level be an option? Thank you, Lisa
  10. Our one constant has been CLE Math. We just started using CLE Language Arts and that seems to be a winner also. My daughter desperately needs the repetition that this curriculum provides. Logic of Handwriting is going well also but I do believe she would thrive with any cursive program as she has an artistic bent and her handwriting has always been beautiful.
  11. Yay! All accomplishments are big accomplishments! That's wonderful!
  12. Merry, thank you so much for your detailed response. It is helpful and I have spent some time reading the links you have provided and I will continue to ponder her options. If I am being truthful, I almost didn't want to hear that A&P was a great option for her because I do love AAS personally. However, I truly appreciate the responses I have received about the successes from those of you that share my struggle. I think at this point, I will at least give her the placement tests. I would be remiss to ignore the advice I have been given. Anyone have a copy of set A they are looking to unload? Thank you again for all your help. Lisa
  13. Hi all: I am currently working through AAS2 with daughter, age 9, CAPD diagnosis, namely expressive language disorder. She does well in the lessons but it does not translate into her other work. No matter how many times I try to encourage her to use her rules (which she can recite on command), break words into syllables, etc., she still struggles spelling basic words. I have been looking at Apples & Pears and am wondering if this might be an option for her. Before I jump ship I am looking for any thoughts or feedback. Thank you, as always, for your support. Lisa
  14. She has had a full evaluation with a university in the area as well as with a SLP and an audiologist. High average IQ but supposedly normal working memory with expressive language disorder. I just cannot believe that everything else is in place for lack of better expression. She just completed a quiz in Language Arts and identified proud and Parker's (used in the context of a last name) as nouns. We have been doing nouns for over a year. I am just baffled.
  15. My daughter, age 9, has CAPD, namely an expressive language disorder although the more I work with her it seems to be she has mixed expressive receptive language disorder. I feel we are spinning our wheels. Her reading has improved but is still choppy and her vocabulary is very immature. Her spelling is poor. We use AAS and in the lesson she does well, Outside of the lesson, forget it. It is as if she retains nothing or is utilizing nothing that she has learned. For instance, we have reviewed the ck rule for many, many months and she will still continue to misspell words such as truck, duck, etc. consistently. I have been looking at Apples & Pears but don't know that it is the answer either. Anything other than straight addition, subtraction, multiplication and basic division slays her. Clocks, before and after, basic word problems, even though we have been doing the same things month after month, do not compute. This morning, we did basic multiplication word problems and after an hour of doing the same thing on a white board, she could not do a basic problem on her own. Example, we did at least a dozen problems - Mary has 10 boxes of cookies, there are five in each box, how many total? We drew it out, talked about same groups, etc. I gave her one to do on her own and she set it up as a subtraction problem. It is hard for me to even understand after an hour of doing nothing but multiplication that she would even think to segue into subtraction. Writing is non-existent. She can barely write an intelligible sentence. We do Dictation Day by Day as copywork. She is doing CLE 2 Language Arts and is doing fairly well with it. Math is CLE 3. We do no science or history. She is working US geography with Shepard Software. I am sorry to be so all over the place but I am typing through tears. I am exhausted and burning out. She sees a SLP twice a week and it is very slow going. I feel I am failing her. It just doesn't seems like anything is sticking. Where do we go from here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Lisa
  16. I am looking for a copywork resource for my 9 year old daughter. She has an expressive language disorder and her vocabulary is about two years below age level. She struggles with spelling as well and we are currently working through AAS level 2. As I struggle to teach her, I am looking for something that is easy for me to incorporate. I need an open and go source. This will likely be her only writing instruction until we get a better handle on spelling. Thank you.
  17. You must be so proud! Congratulations to your ds and his partner. Beautiful performance.
  18. If it were my pet, I would love a donation to a reputable rescue.
  19. My daughter has mild expressive/receptive language delays and CAPD. She is doing very well with CLE. We started this year doing CLE 2 and she is getting ready to start CLE 3. She would be a young third grader in public school. The spiral approach has been a godsend for us. There are timed math drills every lesson but I don't pressure her to complete them in two minutes. The constant review is really advantageous. We are not a religious family and there really isn't much contained in the program if that were to be an issue for you. I hope you find the right program for you and your dc.
  20. I love the looks of this program. Thank you so much for the recommendation.
  21. My daughter has recently been diagnosed with CAPD. She is working at about a 2nd grade level and her vocabulary is very weak. I am looking for suggestions for a vocabulary program with a visual component. Thank you.
  22. Hi all, Please bear with me as this is bound to be scattered as I continue to be unsure of what path to take with my daughter. She was recently diagnosed with Language Disorder with Impairment in Reading (which I have been enlightened that is a broad term for dyslexia) and APD. Originally, with the audiologist, it was determined that she had issues with binaural integration but when she retested she passed with flying colors. Right now, we are currently using AAS for spelling. She is making some progress but still has difficulty transitioning what she has learned onto paper. I have her write some basic sentences in a journal and also am having her do copywork. Her reading is probably at a late second to third grade level, She knows many of her phonemes but I think she could benefit by jumping back into some sort of phonics program. I have been looking at AAR but am wondering if that would be redundant if I am already using AAS. We are getting ready to start level 2. I also have LOE Essentials but felt it moved too fast for her. She is remembering the phonemic rules when reading. For instance, if she reads the word bread incorrectly, I can tell her to change the sound to the second sound of the phonogram and she recalls it pretty easily which tells me that she is retaining. Any suggestions for us? Thank you, once again.
  23. I like Elaina. The pronunciation is clear. I feel that Elena can be pronounced many different ways.
