  1. I was looking at buying the Combo Pack from PHP. Here is what comes in it "The Volume 1 Combo Pack contains one copy of the revised paperback text, one copy of the bound Activity Book, one extra set of Student Pages, and one copy of the Test and Answer Key". (emphasis PHP) If I'm reading correctly what you wrote, it sounds like the combo pack would be all I need?
  2. Thanks!! After all the time I have spent at Peace Hill Press, I never saw the Curriculum Map:lol: Any idea if doing SOTW with two children requires 2 activity books?
  3. I can't say I'm surprised by the show. Next year it will probably be mild to what reality TV is then. If it was a documentary, I would find it interesting just to get some insight. But as reality TV? It just seems wrong. Not from a spiritual perspective. I guess I just don't get why? Most reality TV seems like the Jerry Springer show. Why show your Q!@ on national TV?:glare:
  4. Very good to know about SL. I'll review my previous thread for more ideas. Thanks for your thoughts:001_smile:
  5. Thanks Miss Sherry:001_smile: I edited my post to say that the Bible choices are supplements/extra things for them to do. My DD has the Adventure Bible for Early Readers which she likes to read on her own. Heck, I like to read it-I can understand what I'm reading much better:001_huh: I have Leading Little Ones to God-this would be OK for a 6 and 9 year old? I do think that a Bible Story Book with pictures would be great for us. Both of my kids would really enjoy it. Do the Bibles you recommended have actual stories and not just a small 2 page reading?
  6. I have decided to take the jump and create my own curriculum. From PM's and my thread here I am leaning towards the following for my DC's. PLMK if I've missed a subject or anything important. Feel free to make suggestions as well. I have DS age 6 (not reading and needs phonics intro) in first grade and DD ( advanced LA and Spelling) age 9 in 3rd. I would like to go for more of a classical approach (not sure how the things I chose fit w/in this approach) with hands on and good books. I am waiting eagerly for a copy of TWTM:) I also need to implement some things that are educational for downtime if you could help there as well. (Someone either sent me a link or posted on another thread I started with ideas, but I don't remember which one and can't find the link):001_huh: Both: History SOTW Vol. 1 Science (supplement) SIAN-Detective Lab Music Appreciation Color the Classics III Bible The Children's Story Bible Art Mary Ann Kohl & Bright Ideas Foreign Language La Clase Divertida Level 1 Kit (maybe) DS 1st Grade LA WTM-Ordinary Parent's Guide to Reading Kit WTM-FLL 1 w/audio Thinking Skills 1 Science ES-Intro to Science Bible PAFC-Enjoying God's Gifts (supplement) Handwriting CLP-Writing w/Diligence Math Singapore 1a/1b DD-3rd grade LA WWE 2 Grammar R&S 3 Science Christian Kids Explore- Biology Bible PAFC-Growing with God (supplement) Math Singapore 2a/2b Handwriting Cheerful Cursive Spelling CLP-Spelling Skills 3 Thanks ladies:grouphug:
  7. I would check out the book packages at HOD. The classical one is really great and even my DD enjoyed the ones we got through. It might not be what your looking for, but I thought it would be worth it to make the suggestion. Good luck:)
  8. I'll have to check into this. We recently purchased some charts from Doorposts. They are behavior related though. TFS:)
  9. Luann, is this the correct one? What is Literary Analysis? I am waiting for a copy of WTM to pick up at the library. Are there any other audios you feel are important to hear after I read the book?
  10. I finished The Mailbox: A Novel and LOVED it. I'm not a love story type of gal either. :001_smile:
  11. Thanks Lisa:) I was thinking of sticking with the basics since I will have to keep them anyway due to them being used and they are also working well for my DC's. Boy do I wish it would cool down here in TX! I would love to be able to get outside and due some real life observation.
  12. I think I would prefer Classical, but I'm not sure how well my DC's would respond. Having never taught anything but SL (for a meager 3 weeks because I had the wrong core and had NO clue what I was doing), I'm at a loss as to which way to go. I have a copy of WTM be transferred to my library and am eager to read it:) From what I've done with HOD, the CM method seems like a good fit for DS age 6. I don't think it's good fit for DS age 9. We don't care for dictation or copywork. However, I'm not sure if that is just a part of 3rd grade curriculum across the board. The more I spend time thinking of what to try next, the further I find myself moving away from CM. But again, I don't feel I have enough experience to really make an educated decision. I think reading the information you provided with the links will be of great help. Thanks so much for your ideas:)
  13. I also considered KONOS in a box. In fact it was the first curriculum I looked at because I was interested in the idea of Unit Studies. After reading reviews, some said KONOS in a box was easy and took no planning. Others said exactly the opposite. Needless to say, that left me a bit confused:tongue_smilie:
  14. I really do like this approach of having it tie together. I think it's easier for me to understand and possibly for my children. Being so new to Hschooling and curriculum, I'm not sure I can say for sure in regards to my DC's. However, having the LA tie in doesn't really matter. Honestly, I'm not sure having it tie together matters either. What are your thoughts? I think at this point, my DS seems to do well with the CM method. My DD on the other hand doesn't seem to fit well. Neither my DD or I are fond of the copywork or dictation, but I have no clue as to whether that is just a part of 3rd grade curriculum. I LOVE history, but my DD seemed to be a bit bored by it. I don't know if it's the CM approach, the books provided (which I think are incredible) or just in general. I heavily considered TOG. I loved that it involved some preparation for me, that my DD could help plan what she would do to complete the assignments for the week, and that they had tons of hands-on activities. My DD is also driven by challenge. I read quite a it about MFW vs. HOD and some said they were nearly identical while others said they were very opposite:confused: Any thoughts. I will have to keep some of my HOD items as they are workbooks and my DC's have used them: Singapore 1a and 2a. These work well for us so I will continue them. We also have a Critical thinking book for DS (age 6) that I will continue with as well.
  15. HOD will exchange. However, after some consideration, I feel my DD would be a better fit for a different method of learning. I have read some comparisons of HOD vs. MFW. However, some say they are basically the same and others say they are different. Thanks Dorinda:) Have you used the 1st grade curriculum? If so, would you mind PM'ing me? I have some questions.:)
  16. Jess, I have been using Bigger w/my DD who is a 3rd grader. I briefly considered switching to Preparing. After some thought I think my DD would be better suited to a different education method. Thanks for the suggestion though:001_smile:
  17. Here is a link I found that lists several online options. I hope this helps:001_smile:
  18. I think all of the traits you listed are at work here. We do not have this game, but I think it would fit your DD's skills nicely. She might even be ready for the full version instead of Jr. Rush Hour The skills she is showing are AWESOME!!
  19. I have minimal time do decide if we are keeping any of our current program or none at all. I do not plan on using it right now as I am trying to make a decision of where we go next. If I do keep anything, it's highly unlikely I would use any of for the next curriculum I choose. I LOVE books and the ones we have with the program are wonderful History. The 1st grade readers are Dover and DS really enjoys those too. I still want my kids to be schooled during this time. What would you suggest I do? I do have plenty of suggestions from others here for free curriculum ideas. I am not sure how to "schedule" these. While I don't mind some planning, I do prefer to have a general outline and suggested ideas. I believe Ambleside would offer this. I'm just not sure if CM fits my DD. I think it might be a good fit for DS at this point. Both of my kids enjoy hands-on science and art. Which subjects would be "needed" during this transition? I have a 3rd and first grader. Thanks girls:grouphug:
  20. What an awesome testimony to HS:party: TFS!
  21. We've used it for a few weeks. I've run into a couple Bible stories to read my DD (age 9) talking about sex! I just said, "so and so really wanted him to be her boyfriend."
  22. I've only used Little Hearts and Bigger Pros: Very open and go LOTS of hands on! Science experiments are easy and fun HOD provides you book suggestions if you choose not to order their book packs. I was able to find plenty at my library. My DS in Little Hearts really like the rhymes with the actions and the dramatic play. If you Google reviews for HOD you find that they have VERY positive feedback on their program. Everything ties back to God and Godly characteristics. The devotional is really great. Cons: I initially I didn't like having to flip thru the manual, but sturdy post it notes (used as labeled tabs) quickly solve this problem. If you have any questions about placement, call HOD. While the charts are very helpful, not every child will fit perfectly (as is with any boxed curriculum). Not really a con, but being new, I didn't know. I wish there were things like music and nature study, but these can easily be added on your own. (I just like having everything in the guide because I am new). My personal thoughts: I can only speak for the levels I have, but they are very easy to use for new H'schoolers or those new to HOD. Ask questions to make sure you are getting everything you need. I was not aware that the activities for my sons math were in a different manual than the one I had (previously we used SL which literally comes with EVERYTHING. I assumed other curriculum was the same:001_huh:).We finished much quicker than the recommended time-especially with DD in Bigger. While this might be a dream for some, I really wanted it to take more time. I didn't feel like it was "full" enough for my DD as is-being new, I have no clue how to add things and how to implement them if they are not in the guide. Little Hearts is a great fit for my son-I would say he is a typical first grader, needing phonics, enjoying fun stories, and "play". For my DD I feel she needs a different method of study and does not fit with HOD-although she really enjoys the readers and read-alouds. HTHS:001_smile:
