  1. I have two advanced learners... My dd13, wants to to do advanced work now, graduate early from highschool and pursue her interests. She knows what she wants to do and wants to get to it! She can handle it... I'm allowing her to work at her own pace, and by choice, she is working through her summers. My ds11, is content to stay in his "grade level" but I allow him to work at his level, and provide "more" work for him... Sometimes he balks at this, but understands he needs more than the other child to be challenged. We just dig deeper. He is content to be in the appropriate grade because he desires to play football in high school and college. He believes it is to his advantage to allow time for physical growth to benefit him in football. So I guess there are so many things to consider, and each child is different. As far as giving HS credit, I would give credit for math and foreigh language taken in middle school. Hope you find what works best!
  2. Thanks for the info! I've ditched all spelling programs (SWO bored the heck out of us!) and was going to just go with CM dictation type of spelling... But Simply Spelling will be even better with spelling rules included! I'm gonna order it for all of the kids... ;)
  3. They have great marketing! I felt seduced into buying a core again... and I just sold core 6 and 7, deciding I really didn't need them! I think I love the concept of Sonlight, but core 7 does seem to go over alot of history and readers in one year. And we probably wouldn't use half of the readers, but substitute in our own, more classic WTM recommendations... And I would probably do it over 2 years, and make my own schedule. Sooo, we've decided not to buy Sonlight, but use some of their books incorporated into our own thing. I feel for you, I keep going back and forth with just using Sonlight or WTM, and now Ambleside (that's a whole 'nother story)...

  5. from Walmart too... I mostly used warm water when we were at home, no special soap or chemicals. You can do a google, and there are some wipe formulas out there... It's so easy to just use cloth wipes, since you're washing diapers anyhow. If we were going to be out, I would dampen the wipes before we go out (just in case there wasn't a water source), then put them in a ziplock bag. I also used this spray from California Baby when we were on outings. I've also made my own flannel wipes, but the terry ones seem to work the best.
  6. I'm still using it for my 7th grader in addition to the other resources. I'll still be doing read alouds for the 2nd grader, and he can listen in or read it on his own. I think it helps to tie in everything else if you're using Kingfisher. The mapwork is a wonderful tool, too, and if they did it 3 years ago, I don't think they will remember it or understand it as they would in the older grades.
  7. My ds did SOTW too. So this year, to keep him in the same time period with 2 others, I'm using Biblioplan. It was designed to work with WTM methods and uses many of the the WTM recommended books as well as the Famous Men... series and Kingfisher, as well as SOTW for the younger ones. It has a 4 year history cycle. Check it out... Biblioplan
  8. that the older dc could do, and to save time, I included my ds11 (soon to be 12). Many have said that English 7 and 8 review previous years plus some new material. My younger ds is a quick learner, and the olders need a good review. I'm starting now and will carry through summer and next year, that way we can go at a slower pace. We were using EG, but I thought I might as well get to R&S since it is thorough enough.
  9. I'm starting R&S English 7 with 3 of my dc. My question is whether or not I will need more than one text? Should each have their own, since we will be using them daily? Our schedules are tight, so I want to make sure it is available for them to use. And my dd doesn't share her books very well, and she likes to take her sweet time doing her work. Or maybe get 2 for now? What do you think? I was about to order 2 more, but wanted to ask opinions before I press the confirm button. Thanks!
  10. My kids need a thorough review, as they haven't retained much. That definitely will help! I don't own any worksheets. I think I'll order some, along with another text. Thanks!
  11. I'm starting my high schoolers with R&S English 7. So I have the set, but I was wondering how all of you did it? Do you read the intro of the chapter with them, do the class practice together on a white board or orally, or do you just let them go for it, then help if they need it? Can this be done as an independent course, or is there a lot of teacher instruction required? Also, since I have more than one using the text, should I get more copies? How many lessons to you do a week? Thanks! :)
  12. K9 Web Protection So far, it has worked very well and is easy to use!
  13. Sorry to hijack! I just got my PLL (thanks Jessica for the suggestion!) and started looking through it to make a schedule for next year... I noticed no mention of the parts of speech! My first response was "oh no! I can't use this!" I guess my head is still stuck in the WTM and was comparing to FLL... Well, the more I looked at it, I discovered that it does cover everything beautifully, but just doesn't put a name to it. If I'm in a total panic, I guess I could cover nouns, verbs and adjectives over the summer first.. still deciding! Then spelling... what to do??? Spelling workout covers all the spelling/phonics rules... Do I need this??? Someone please tell me to relax! :scared: One second I'm totally relaxed about it, next moment I start to panic, and my brain reverts to the "grammar stage" of rules and facts... My plan was/is to start formal grammar in 4th. And science, I love the idea of literary science... We're gonna start with the Burgess books and Among the Meadow People series... Very cool!
  14. World History Ancients/Middle Ages--Biblioplan (which uses Spielvogel) US History--Notgrass US Govt--Notgrass
  15. which uses Spielvogel's Western Civ. Also, Lightning Lit, Medieval and Shakespeare comedies, as well as other readers from TWTM...
  16. It looks do-able. I've wanted to use Lightning Lit, but my ds isn't a strong reader, so I opted to just use his history readers and didn't want to add to his load... As far as math goes, if you think your ds needs more drill practice, then Saxon might be a good thing. And he may be able to use it on his own until he gets to pre-algebra or so. I've not used TT, so I can't really compare the two. And yes, this board has so much wisdom and helpful info! It's neat to see what others are using... I've changed my mind so many times, it's ridiculous! :D

  18. does a great job at this. It has comprehension, analysis, and writing exercises after each unit. My kids used this when they were in PS.
  19. Thanks Ellie... I don't have time to spend reading into everything. My HSLDA membership is current. I'm gonna try to keep on for now...
  20. from the LA Times... Ruling Seen as a Threat... If this ruling stands, then all of us in CA are illegally homeschooling??? I'm trying not to freak out!
  21. I'd like to try to get through whatever I start within a year or so... We could just start now I suppose.
  22. What do you think? Or should I go with his current grade level?
  23. It looks like a book I may have used in high school. LOL... I definitely will consider it. I was hoping to get more suggestions. ;)
  24. for a 10th grader. Ds just came out of PS last year, failing English. Last year we did a lot of catching up, and he knows more than he did before. I'd like to find something that he could do for 11th grade, an overview of some sort, but not so difficult he'll be overwhelmed. Right now he is finishing up Easy Grammar Plus, and Writing Strands 5. He is doing well with grammar, but I don't know yet if he's retained much. He definitely needs more practice with writing essays. His goals for college include going to a community college first. With that in mind, what do you recommend? I just want him to be proficient and confident when he goes to CC. Some suggestions I've been given include R&S 7, Jensen's Grammar and Format Writing, Analytical Grammar... What do you think??? Thanks! Oh, and I'm thinking of LLATL Gold, Am Lit too... He's not used to reading classics and goes through them very slowly (and reluctantly!)
