  1. I'm only asking because I know there are several heavily christian states in India...I think both are in the southern part... One is Carilla (probably the wrong spelling) and not sure the other name, but can find out. I have several very dear friends from Carilla who are very strong Believers and know their Bibles more than I do (after 30 some years of reading it!)... just depends... and probably hard to tell just through letters... you can't really witness the "fruit" like you could if he went to your church. HTH!
  2. I am so glad to read a thread about Saxon Phonics.. I have been thinking that I should do the same thing and "fill in gaps" with several of my dc. My ds (now 11) did Saxon phonics 1 and 2 in a christian classical school and to this day, I KNOW it seriously made him a great speller and reader, too. He can sound out words that are really funky/rule-breakers BECAUSE he did Saxon phonics. Sooo, now I'm really thinking that it would be so beneficial to my dd age 9 and her sister, age 8 to do the level 2... It is very "saxon" and intense, but it covers everything and does a great job reviewing daily, too... HTH
  3. Hey.. just wondering if the doc mentioned if it's completely fluid filled... I know that if it is, there's a great chance it will go away on its own... cysts are SUPER common (dh owns an imaging center with ultrasounds/ct, so I know they are)... also, when pregnant with first ds, they discovered a large cyst in my ovary... mine wasn't fluid filled, though, so although we hoped it would go away with delivery, it didn't and had to have surgery... but I had never had any pain associated with it... it was a WEIRD cyst called a dermoid... seriously weird, like docs thing it's my undeveloped twin or something... baby teeth, hair, etc. Sorry to gross you out... but my periods were NEVER regular until they removed it by laparoscopy... so they think it was there for years and years...probably since around 13. If it causes her lots of pain, I'd go with the BCP... but mostly make sure you have a great doc, who really cares about her/you... someone who knows what they are doing and you can trust (they are worth their weight in gold!) Hang in there! There are much worse things!!
  4. I love the comments of the ladies so far.. I've tried managers or their chores and the Peg system and figured out that I personally just LIKE the idea of having a system! Have they worked for us? No...because they tend to get too complicated and once I have them all set up, I'm bored with it (I know.. it's weird...like how I love making a budget...but it's not fun anymore, once I have to implement)... All this to say... thumbs up to the index card idea...magnetic clips to hold and especially to taking the time to train the dc before we expect them to do it in an acceptable way. ;)
  5. I'm just saying that reading the title to this one was painful...can't imagine trying to do it...hope you didn't torture yourselves too long!!:iagree:
  6. My 11 yo ds is giving me fits... this is his first year hsing, so that may be part of it... he's very verbal, strong willed and doesn't think his mom is capable of teaching HIM (oh yeah, oozing pride)... despite the fact that Mom was a secondary teacher before said ds was around! His attitude is so stinky and although I have OFTEN seen him do things independently..he's very able, but he tries the "I can't" and "I need help" alot of times when he's really trying to dawdle and waste a little more time. I do think part of it is seeing me help the other youngers, so we started a few weeks ago working together one on one for 1-2 hours doing all the language arts stuff. I think that is helping a bit, but the attitude is still there... anyone with answers to that, let me know... I'm willing to pay good money!!:bigear:
  7. Thanks for sharing...love the title and idea... looking forward to reading it! Thanks for the website, too!!!:D
  8. So...this is a dumb question, but how much do the dslite's cost... used vs. new... my son has been begging for one for a few years and I've been holding off, but he plays on my cell phone constantly when we're out doing errands, etc., so I'm thinking it might be worth investing in...
  9. :iagree:Yeah, we're slumped, too... head spinning, still not "happy" with all our schedule/curriculum.. "am I doing all I need to be doing with all four kids at all four different levels?????" Monday and Tuesday this week were TORTUOUS at our house... a fight to get anyone to do their work... I was hating my life on Monday... it was ugly. Thankfully yesterday and today was much better...but I'm feeling the PMS-like thing, too and hoping there's an end in sight (at least temporarily) like real PMS!! I'll just take my Chill Pill, now...or as my Grandma used to call it, "my quiet pill"...:chillpill:
  10. I'm a really pathetic newbie that wants to learn more... can't figure out all the abbreviations...like ffl? We just started using WWE for 3 of my kids and I just made a guess which level they'd be at... it's pretty much grade level for that, although, b/c one of my dd struggles, I ordered one down and it's perfect for her. hth!:001_huh:
  11. Bless your heart and all of you...I'm with you...this is our first year hsing all four kids and we started the year out doing Abeka Academy for everything...ugh. So, as I try not to think about the money we spent on all of this curriculum/videos, we are still using the math and Bible and phonics/language for the younger ones...but trying to do WTM on everything else and my head continues to spin. I keep feeling like there's not enough time in the day. Especially for my ds in 5th grade.. to do latin and spanish and writing (those are the ones we're not doing enough of)... I need something, but I'm not sure what... BTW, anyone know how I can find the abbreviations for all your curriculum mentioned? I'm new and am so interested in what's out there that's good and classical... I could ask tons of questions here, because I also can't figure out how to post a question/new post....sigh. And I don't have time to be surfing all day :)... even though I'd love to...to escape my reality! HELP!!:chillpill:
  12. Hey!!! I'm new to the board, too and my brain is spinning with all the abbreviations...help! Where can I find what they all mean??
  13. Thank you all for posting about dictation... my 11 yo ds is hating his life on dictation days (we just started hsing this yr and so I am doing WWE4 with him and it's challenging enough!)... so good to be reminded why it's important!! We'll keep with it!
  14. I have to tell you that I really enjoy where we live and pretty much feel like we have everything and more we could possibly ever want...but then there are days that discontent creeps in... What an ENEMY! Robbing us of the amazing blessings God has given us... wishing for a newer house with no flooding of the basement and newer plumbing, etc, etc., etc. I'm only sharing this because it strikes me that if my dh and I, who have so very much, wish for better things, then we will truly NEVER be satisfied with an earthly home or all the nice earthly things. That old saying, "it's never enough" is so true...it's our nature and I am so glad that someday, all things will be made new, brand spanking new... and any "light and momentary afflictions" we find ourselves in here are NOTHING compared to the glory that awaits us who believe in the finished work of the Cross. Preaching to myself here... it's a daily battle not to think of SOMETHING I wish was different or would change.... maybe even a moment by moment battle.
  15. Hi ladies, I'm new at this and just read (literally last night) the languages portion of WTM and realized I need to add foreign languages to my 5th graders day this year... he's had prima latina (back in 3rd grade in a private school)...but nothing last year. I think I'm good with the latin stuff, but not sure about spanish... don't know if you remember WTM suggestions, but she gives a few options for timing...quick, slower or slowest (basically doing the RS in 2years or 4 years are our options)...what I'm not 100% clear about is... would that be Rosetta level 1 taking 4 years??? Or is it 1 and 2 taking four years (if we do the slower route)... Also, before we invest in that huge expense, can you give me peace of mind that it is a good/great program from your experience??? I'm a little nervous about plunking down all that money...just want to make sure it is worth it and if you have any positive feedback, please share! Many thanks in advance!!
