  1. Having been through this, as you can see from the ages of my children (and my youngest sick from birth), the best advice I can give is to willing to make adjustments. The first thing to realize is homeschooling will look different that what you are used to. That's ok. Simplify to start and then add in things as time permits. You have to be flexible and get as much done on good days as possible so you aren't stressed on the bad days. If you are having a really out of control day, the best thing to do is put the books aside that require your help and give them things to do independantly for the day. Write down what you would like accomplished each day for each child and the one that needs you more, have him work beside you as you look after the baby. If he needs your help and the baby is having a tough moment, have him put it aside until you have a moment. Enjoy this time, with some adjustments and flexibility it works fine. :grouphug:
  2. I am a little puzzled. When a child is being taught by DVD or some other form, how is that different than sitting in a class with the teacher at the front teaching. Because the teacher can answer questions? Well if you have someone available to you that can answer the question how is that failing your child? Don't PS kid have to go home and read their texts and answer questions independently? It's clear from all the posts that the problems with us knowing everything our children are learning comes mainly when our children hit highschool, but has the OP ever homeschooled their child in highschool to show us "The better way?" There have been some wonderful success stories of independant learners in this thread and I am sure there are many others. We all go through difficult times in our homeschool journey, I am sure glad that I didn't believe I couldn't allow my child to learn independantly when I went through mine and stuck them in school. They have done wonderfully, and my son has done extremely well with highschool provincial testing even when I didn't have all the answers for him. This has been a great thread with so many encouraging stories. May we leave this encouraged to continue on as imperfect as we are and give our children the best we are able to give. :)
  3. :iagree: There are so many great horse novels, and many of them classics. I agree to just let her read what interests her. I have different ages too and I try to commit 3 nights a week 20-30 min before bed to read to just my 12 year old once the little ones are in bed. We really look forward to this time together. :)
  4. Is there anywhere online to see samples? I can't seem to find a website. thanks
  5. I haven't seen the original post but from what I have seen have you looked into Visual-spatial learner? I have a gifted VS. If I am way off base, sorry it just sounded similiar to my experience. http://www.visualspatial.org/what_is_a_vsl.htm
  6. The only way to prevent and infestation is to do the inspection. I sat my daughter down for a few hours (yes that long) with her hair wet and as she watched a movie I checked her hair strand by strand and looked for any live bugs or eggs. Its worth the hard work because we caught it early and had no problems (we found 3 live and about 10 eggs). It worked great for us and her hair was really long.
  7. Yes, it does work. However you really need to be consistant, if you aren't it just won't work. It worked great for us but I found when there were disruptions like guests coming for a few days, if I didn't keep at it it was hard to get back on track.
  8. :iagree:This is exactly what happened with my daughter. I didn't think it was her eyes because she could see fine, but even though the prescription was low the headaches went away. She actually needed a low prescription for reading and distance. She will now get headaches when not getting enough sleep or going to long without eating. I would definitely get her eyes checked.
  9. I agree, definitely dominants. I also agree to get them through Shar Music(online) and I think shipping is free in the US. I would not try to put them on yourself, I agree to get your teacher to put them on or if you buy local, they should be able to do it. These are the strings my son started out with. Strings are expensive but it makes a huge difference in sound.:)
  10. She mostly spells phonetically, sometimes mixes up sounds but not often. She does reverse letters. I have used quite a few rule based programs but they just didn't stick. What program would use memory cues? Thanks:)
  11. Thanks so much for the info. I am going to look these up. My dd says that she sees pictures when she reads. Do you know why people say that kids don't like Bartons? The demo looked like it would be fun, at least my daughter thought so. It's such a hard decision, I am tired of spending money on programs that don't work!:001_unsure:
  12. Thank you both for your responses. My dd12 has some form of dyslexia, she has learned to read well (she has made ways to cope) her read aloud isn't as strong. Her major problems lie in spelling and processing questions. We have tried sequential spelling, AAS (which worked for a while but then it stopped sticking), Alphabet Island, Spelling Power and others. She originally learned to read with Phonics Museum. She still cannot spell past around grade 2. She really liked the looks of Barton. Barton's is so expensive but if it can help her to overcome these difficulties it would be worth it. I also understand you can sell off a level and then buy the next? This is all so new to me. I would like to get her formally tested but it is close to $2000 here. We can't afford that and I would rather spend money on something that would help her at this point.
  13. I have been looking at both these programs and I can't decide which would be better. Can anyone compare? What would be the differences? Thanks so much!:)
  14. I am purchasing the Barton Reading and am wondering if you should use Rewards at the same time or is the same things covered in Bartons? Thanks:)
  15. But when you are a Christian, the bible is what you use to determine if teachers are false or not. Their teachings, as I have posted previously, go against biblical teaching. Not all of it but enough. We are to warn against false teachers. Their teachings include deceit, lack of mercy ( except for husbands), put stumbling blocks in front of children etc. That is why I am completely against their teachings and find them dangerous! If a wife wants to go back to an abusive husband, sure that`s her decision, but to say that she MUST biblically is wrong because that is NOT what scripture teaches!!
  16. I was bulimic when I was younger and still have urges today. There are many reasons why someone becomes bulimic. For some it is a weight issue but for others is much more complicated. The only suggestion I have is to give her oodles of love and support which I am sure you are already doing. Also to keep reading and finding ways to help and build your relationship so she can talk if she is willing. Don't give up, it's a hard struggle but keep fighting for her. I am praying for you.:grouphug:
  17. I think a lot of the reasons why many like teachings like the Pearls stems from perfectionism. The Pearls claim that if you follow their teachings you will have perfect kids who will grow up to be perfect adults and at the same time you will have a perfect marriage. So many people want a formula to follow, and the Pearls have taken PORTIONS of scripture and used that to back up what they do. Women then fear that if they don't follow their way they will have the latter, wayward kids, a terrible marriage etc. If you look at the Pearl's teaching and examine it through the bible it is completely twisted. That's where so many heresies come from, twisting scripture. When you read the Pearls stuff you see lying, deceit, provoking children, putting stumbling blocks in front of children, withholding mercy..... and so much more completely contrary to the bible. And it is sad to see Christians fall into this trap because it doesn't produce the PERFECT family like they so wanted. JMO
  18. Ok, I had to post this. This is a quote from Michael Pearl about how to deal with screaming in young children. This is why I said that horrible husbands get more mercy than little children. What happened to blessed are the merciful? "You might just ignore any offense from the others when she screams; let it always be her fault. Consistency on your part will break that habit in just a few days. Never threaten, and never show mercy. One squeak of a scream gets a switching." This sickens me!:glare:
  19. I wish I could knit, those patterns look so good. The only thing I can do is bake, crafty presents always turn out to be flops.:crying:
  20. I can't comment on pedophiles never reaching repentence as I have never studied this but I do believe that even though we should forgive does not mean we let down our guard and trust them. I will try not to rant but in my opinion this should not be an issue because pedophiles should not be released from jail, especially if research shows they do not rehabilitate!
