  1. Would it be possible to double up this year on math? So he would be doing algebra 1 and geometry at the same time. Then next year he would do algebra 2 and chemistry. 9th: biology with DIVE BJU algebra 1 BJU geometry TOG history/lit/writing vocab logic if we have time 10th: chemistry with DIVE BJU algebra 2 TOG: history/lit/writing not sure what else yet
  2. Ok, then we will go directly to biology this year and skip physical science. He has done a bit of physical science this year so that's enough of that. Yes, we can double up on math. I remember having to do that in high school so I know it's doable. Thank you all so much for your help! I'm open to any other thoughts you might have. :)
  3. I'm very glad I asked about this. He's a bit behind on math--long story--so yes, we're planning on algebra 1 for 9th grade but he's not ready to start that yet. We're doing math year round and double on Saturday to work on catching up. I'm thinking of following the DIVE CD schedule. So we would do: Physical Science (physics/chemistry intro) Biology Chemistry Physics Does that sound better? Thanks for the tip about programming. I'll make a note of that.
  4. My head is swimming from all the science research I've been doing hopefully you all can clear up some things for me. I was trying to figure out a science plan for my oldest who plans to be an engineer of some sort. I was thinking of jumping into biology for 9th grade and settled on BJU with the DIVE Cd. Then I noticed that BJU considers biology a 10th grade class. Is that still a decent plan? Then I was thinking down the line and considering this plan: 10th: chemistry 11th: advanced biology/anatomy 12th: physics But then I was thinking.... is that too much of a focus on life sciences for a engineering-geared guy? Or is that a decent plan? I don't mind taking one year at a time but feel like we need some sort of idea where we are headed so we don't find ourselves in a real mess down the road. Help, please!
  5. I am considering that for the algebra level. If we stick with BJU, then I might do just that though it's pricey.
  6. We've been using BJU for years and have loved it until the 7th grade book. That book has been a serious challenge... not because of the material, but because of how the practice problems are structured. I'm not sure if we should move on to the 8th grade book and hope things get better, or if we should jump ship. I had thought Teaching Textbooks was the way to go, but I keep reading how it's not the best for serious math students. My oldest wants to be an aeronautical or aerospace engineer, so our math needs to do the job well. The problem with the practice problems has been that too often the practice problems want him to have used formulas and styles of problems that haven't been taught yet. We'll look them up, and the formula is taught later in the program. It's bothering both of us. If I knew the 8th grade book was better, we could probably slog through and keep going. My other concern is while I'm great at basic math and geometry, I struggled with algebra. I would really love some teaching help once we get there... which is why I was considering TT. Thoughts?
  7. You have TONS of options. I would check out http://videofitness.com/ for help.
  8. I used that method (minus the Dawn) this week to kill around a hundred of those suckers. :D Once they are inside the plastic wrap, I squish them.
  9. Cooking the pie filling before freezing it is optional, though it will make the apples take up less space. My favorite recipe follows... multiply for how many pies worth you want to freeze: 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp butter 5 cups apples, peeled and sliced 1/4 cup lemon juice mix up and put in quart size freezer bags, label, lay flat to freeze
  10. Thank you all so much for your suggestions. :) I really appreciate the time you spent. Feel free to add more... I'm making a list of books to look for. :D
  11. My oldest is suddenly into sci/fi books, but I haven't read enough (as in hardly any) to have a clue where to point him. He's read 2/3 of C.S. Lewis' series already. I would like to find ones without s*xual content. :001_smile: Any suggestions?
  12. I'm learning all sorts of things. :D I'll never be as trendy as she is, but she has good suggestions. Thank you!
  13. Wow. I don't know how take care of aging parents because I haven't done it yet. But racking up debt with little intention of paying it back is otherwise known as stealing. :glare: The companies have to make up that loss somewhere and pass it on by increasing prices for everybody. I know you know this, but maybe the reality would hit her if she thought about it that way... maybe. Besides that, she's wrong. They can't go after HER after she's gone, but they will go after her estate... meaning anything and everything of value that she leaves behind.
  14. Well-Trained Mind Pocket Full of Pinecones, though it's a diary format... I find it inspiring Educating the Whole-Hearted Child
  15. :iagree: I don't know that I'm that fashionable, so take this for what it's worth. I'm a skirt/dress girl, so I almost always wear a skirt and top. They are easy to dress up or down and I find them very comfy. I get skirts at Bedford Fair and Christopher & Banks most often. I usually get my tops from Landsend or Christopher & Banks. I'm not into the super matchy outfits C&B sells, but they work well as separates. They have nice tops that aren't too pricey, but are nicer than a t-shirt. I rarely pay full price... overstocks and sales are my friend. :D I get cardigans from Landsend. Then I usually put mary janes on my feet. Danskos are my favorite.
  16. I wouldn't ask him... I would do the timer and take him often. At the beginning, I often set the timer for 15-20 minutes, then I would stretch it to 30 min. Yes, it's annoying, but the boys quickly figured out that if THEY would decide by themselves when it was time to go, they could go way less often. LOL So that motivated them. He's the age when the answer to almost any question tends to be "no"... so I wouldn't ask.
  17. I usually stay away from these kind of threads :tongue_smilie: but I agree that this is a discipline issue. And I wouldn't be asking him about his opinion on school. He's 5... he shouldn't have a vote. :) His job right now is learning that he isn't the one in charge, regardless of where he is schooled. For learning to give choices, I like the book, "Parenting with Love and Logic".
  18. That's a very cool garter snake, but please take him OUTSIDE! :glare: Yes, your paper airplane flies well from the roof of the play set... now get down. :tongue_smilie:
  19. All the men and future men in my house are intact.
  20. And I mean, really need? Money is tight... I'll buy the teachers' book if it's really all that and a bag of chips, but chances are good my oldest will be doing this on his own and I'll check his answers. We probably won't be playing games they suggest. :tongue_smilie:
  21. Ok, maybe not boiling water... seemed like a good idea. I wonder if there's some other more natural thing that would kill them... But I agree, a small amount of bleach shouldn't be a problem, just don't do it that often. :)
  22. For the drains, I would try boiling water rather than bleach.
