  1. I vacillated for a long time in terms of signing up to be one of their instructors for Challenge level. I decided against it after having numerous discussions acknowledging ability differences among students yet being told that students could not step out of sequence and advance based on ability. One beautiful reality about hs is that we can allow our children to advance at their own pace. I have grown weary of the programmatic thinking that these groups (at least the one I had conversations with) eschew in ps yet ultimately promote in their own groups. They have some neat materials to purchase and use, but the behind the scenes approach I observed was too rigid.
  2. I delivered my twins via c-section only because it was medically necessary. If it was not necessary, I wouldn't do it. My recovery was slower (2 weeks) because I was on bedrest for the preceding 12 weeks, so my body was in a weakened state. It was not that bad, though. You can get through anything necessary... the only thing that mattered to me was giving birth to two healthy babies.
  3. I agree completely with Lisa, and I have instructed my dc in Latin from a very young age.
  4. I practiced law as a tax attorney until I had children. Going into law school w/o a Latin background will not undermine a student in any way (IMO).
  5. It is possible that they realize that this type of job is not about them, and they want life to be about themselves. The job of parenting and hschooling our children means that most of our life is about something and someone beside ourselves. I have had friends from law school tell me they cannot believe I gave up law for this. There are associated costs that some people have the wisdom to realize they are not willing to pay. Honestly, their kids are better off ... Self-knowledge is a good thing for everyone, and homeschooling or even being at home with children is not for everyone. I personally wouldn't trade it for anything.
  6. As others have suggested, pray for her. I have done this with many difficult people in my life. Some of them went on to change, but the bottom line is I changed. I have spent a large part of my life being resented due to jealousy (what others perceive my life is like). As some have posted, we do send out certain messages. God showed me that my reserved personality coupled with the fact that I am not the type who discloses much about my life or struggles can lead others to certain conclusions. Now they are not justified conclusions just like your neighbor's attitude toward you is not justified, but I have discovered that their perception is their reality. All I can change is me. God is the change agent for everyone else. I definitely empathize with what you are going through!
  7. I think it could work in that there is one new lesson each week, and the three exercises for the week are based on that lesson. What I did at home was use the teaching notes on Monday, have my daughter do exercise 1 on Monday, 2 on Tuesday, 3 on Wednesday, and then test on Friday. I would think that this could easily be adapted to a once weekly coop setting, since there is only 1 day of teaching per se. The only drawback would be the lack of feedback on the exercises from day to day. A parent could do this though if the parent had the teacher manual to check the work. There are also skill support exercises that some people use (on Thursdays if you follow M-F schedule). HTH, Nancy
  8. Memoria Press has some online Latin classes that are o/s regular school hours. Website is http://www.memoriapress.com/onlineschool/index.htm
  9. If the student can do the requisite work, will TPS admit them regardless of age?
  10. You basically just described our culture too! My husband and I never really had a peer base growing up which we didn't (and still don't) really mind. No one in our house really has any desire to "fit" per se. I guess I just feel like it would be nice for them to find some others they click with. They spend most of their time with adults and with some young adults. What I am discovering as my oldest is doing HS work (yet nowhere near HS age) is that I don't want her around these older girls with whom she has nothing in common in most respects, yet she has nothing in common with girls her age either. I never really did growing up, but I guess I am attached to the idea that somewhere out there maybe there is someone with whom all of us can connect. As you said in your post, too, my husband and I prefer to be around others who have different ideas and views. I guess we are all just "outside-the-box noconformist idealists." Thanks for your post. It is nice to know someone out there feels similarly! :001_smile:
  11. I will check that site. I know my daughter is prepared to move forward, but I guess I should consider whether to just continue through Advanced Algebra, then Geometry. Have any of you done that?
  12. Based on the other post about not being able to discuss abilities and/or converse with others about our children, I have a related question. How have all of you found peers for your children? This has been a relentless struggle for us in our household. I would like my children to have actual peers, not just friendships where they always have to accommodate and adjust to the kids around them. How did your kids find a peer base/friends when they were so out of sync with their "age-mates"? Nancy
  13. Her oldest is 7th grade, so no they haven't gotten that far yet.
  14. I think I will email her. My daughter (and ds) is pg, and I am no expert in the geometry area whatsoever. I realize that whatever I choose needs to be complete enough so that I don't have the anxiety of potentially undermining her due to my relative inability. Thanks so much for passing along her information!
  15. She just turned 11. She finished Foerster Algebra in December, and I have been grappling with the Geometry decision for several months. Geometry is a relative weakness for me, but I know she is ready to move on to HS geometry. I have wasted a lot of money over the years trying curricula that did not work, and I am not in a position currently to do that with HS geometry books! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  16. We recently transitioned to Michael Clay Thompson's program. You can check it out at http://www.rfwp.com/mct.php
