  1. If a single young lady wanted to marry a circ young man, at what point (before getting emotionally serious) in the relationship would that subject be discussed? Not here to debate "why." It's a preference. And non-negotiable. Now, because it IS such a personal issue, (not something you just come out and ask) how would she know that the young man "qualified" before things progressed too far. (not meaning physical intimacy - but emotional attachment) Need ideas as to how to approach the subject. Given where we are culturally, I guess that may happen when discussing sexual health. What would be the best way to graciously handle this sensitive issue? TIA
  2. :iagree: and when the focus is on the cool Christian rock band, finger foods, drinks with catchy names, while you chill with friends who may or may not have just gotten finished playing the wii who are wearing jeans and t-shirts - but do take about 20 minutes to talk about biblical truth - it's not a youth church service... it's a mixer. (and it's intentional.)
  3. I thought you meant Social Studies. I'm with you and no, you are not being a "fuddy duddy." I'd have been annoyed, too. I do see children's church as a fun time with some catchy Bible stuff tossed in. IMO, the youth groups, too, are often just social outtings. It's supposed to be enjoyable. BUT also significant and to help one grow in their faith. The lack of scripture is problematic. Do people go to church/ synogogue/ a mosque to be entertained? Personally, specific bible study groups with a more focused curriculum have been more effective in the growing of my chidren's faith. We no longer view Sundays at a church as serious training ground. (Expecting it to be without actively and consistently working within leadership to implement change will only lead to frustration.) *Millstones & Stumbling Blocks
  4. go to the website (home page) Click on the header labeled "Resources" at the top of the page. Find the section labeled "Epistula" scroll down until you find what you're looking for.
  5. Is Wilson speaking of the Biblical definition of slavery which was not for a lifetime and akin to being, I guess, some sort of indentured servant? Biblically, after 7 years a slave was granted his/ her freedom. That's where the whole concept of indentured servitude came from. The concept of slavery being for life or for one specific ethnic group and their descendants for LIFE is not the biblical model. Is the quote complete? I personally have a different question... if biblically one is told that it is good to gain one's freedom and if already free then it is bad to become a slave or return to a state of enslavement... Why does the Apostle Paul encourage Onesimus to return to his slavemaster? Does he not take Onesimus BACK to Philemon, himself? So, Paul went against the biblical model. (Maybe Paul was just trying to reconcile the two men as "brothers in Christ" - I don't know) That's just ONE part of the problem of slavery. "Just be a nice slave master" / "just be a good slave." add in many years, various kinds of slavery, human cruelty, selfishness, pride, ignorance... and greed. (And a dollop or two of plain ole' stupidity!!!) and you've got a huge nasty, ugly mess. I will read more to see EXACTLY where Mr. Wilson stands Today. to think Abolitionists were woefully wrong is CRAZY.
  6. Owning slaves was not considered a crime. At one time it was legal. No, it's not ok. Not cool. Not moral. Not Equitable... But at one time, culturally, it was accepted. Is this man addressing slavery as an institution in the past or still advocating for it today? (Morality, Ethics, Legality... sigh) While there are many non-blacks on here in the U.S.A. around the world TODAY who boldly speak out against slavery NOW, how many would have spoken out boldly THEN? (when the culture reflected the acceptance of slavery) Of course, no one can really answer that - one can only say what they would have hoped to have done/ said. So, is he advocating/ justifying for "today" or explaining/ justifying in light of history?
  7. Online School for Girls (used by top notch all girl private schools) Google it
  8. You don't need to purchase cards. The history survey & transition class is good as it covers a lot of history. But it is not necessary. (Good for prep AND offered over the summer but the summer class is accelerated.) For Omni I - get the book list and just read and discuss. Immerse your child in that historical period. For Latin Alive help - go to HeadventureLand (Classical Academic Press) FREE

  12. :001_huh: I am not ok with that. it just seems "off." Like... "You can afford it, so pay my tuition." capital campaigns for donations... fine. But charging anyone "extra" to cover the cost of someone else?!!
  13. How much is done / covered in the science seminars? Would someone who loves science be left "wanting?" Is there a lot of skimming or do students get a firm grasp of their subjects? How is history covered? ** Can it be considered a solid stand alone for high school (or just so so) for those with high academic standards?
  14. Memory Work Presentations Socialization/ Positive peer interaction Fun explorations - nothing deep ** I agree about the younger ones. Have seen a couple of great tutors who make it work, though. (But that's because they are doing more and investing more of their own creativity. They tweak to meet the needs of the children in their group.) It's an add on. If anybody tells you differently, they are delusional.
  15. I think Classical Conversations uses this in Challenge I.
  16. Create a list of what you want cleaned. Delegate to the oldest who may outsource to the younger ones. But the oldest is ultimately responsible for being the task master. Add in $$ or some reward IF you choose to. This is contingent upon the chores being done to your standards. Foster teamwork & let the kids talk it out and decide who does what. Some prefer certain tasks. Think of it as teambuilding ha ha (and leadership training) We don't alternate. Example - the kitchen must be cleaned nightly. Work it out, work together but if it's not clean the two of them suffer. It's easier to have a helper than to have to do everything yourself. And you'll be done sooner so you can do the stuff you want to do. Squabbling/ arguing/ playing the blame game is never going to be beneficial. We are stuck together like glue. Your sibling is here and not going away anytime soon (prayerfully) so move on. What is our goal? If Dad and I are assured the kitchen is clean and we see it's not. You get another chance to get it right. If this happens twice, you clean it while being supervised but now hmmm the appliances look like they need some attention. Those baseboards just can not wait til the weekend. ( You see where I'm going with this) and attitude is also important no grumbling/ turning on one another you shouldv'e held each accountable before I had to STOP what I was doing and come down here and by the way... you are "done" for the night. In your room - lights out. Because at that point it has become a character issue. Either lying or laziness or you think you're getting over. Even if we don't see the kitchen til 10 and you are in bed. We will wake you up and you finish your job. All of this requires that I be diligent and on top of it. Some times we are all just tired. Or busy. If it's that kind of day/ night we say "oh well..." and tackle it in the AM. In our home everybody is responsible for keeping it up. It's just easier for everyone to pitch in for 2 - 4 HARD and DEDICATED hours. The main areas people will see stay presentable. If someone needed to be in my whole house... I might have to get rid of stuff. (Less to keep up with) They'd have to accept that "hey, we LIVE here" or I'd get help with organization. a system that works for ME and MY familiy.
