  1. I cut it off before they bring it up and ask them: "Public School? Aren't you worried about socialization?" then laugh crazily and twitch
  2. I enjoy write guide, and have actually copied and sent the actual standard I want to be covered, and what you tell the teacher the more the better the assignment will work with your child. due the one email daily, planning that is essential, or you wind up spending lots of time on small items. If you explain as you have in the opening thread to the teacher, they really take YOUR input serious. good luck
  3. My oldest 14 and in 9th grade, started last year with Write Guide. I love to write, he writes because he has to, and will only do the bare minimum I give to him. We have the same teacher this year as last and she is very fun. My son and I look at his work for the semester and figure out what writing assignments he will need. He did a narrative, exposition, and is now working on a comparative and contrast. I set the perameters, for example, how long, what I am looking to pull out of him. How many web sites he can use and how I want him to research in books also. I am not satisfied with cut and paste...growl...long story, She talks to me private thru their portal and she sends emails daily to my son, that I am able to open his and hers. His writing has improved tremendously. She is able to get him to see in a different way, and gives suggestions, (some the same I had done in past, but he reads it and goes, of course, that is a grand idea). I have not tried it with my younger kids, but plan on it, for them next year. We sign up for Sep, Oct, Nov then again Jan, Feb, Mar as those are the months we do school for full weeks, not alot of holidays, etc.
  4. oh how I love you all!! I was fighting to just fiddle fart, when I should be organizing mummy making chickens- but I'm worn out from taking that frozen game hen out of the freezer:lol: at least one thing done on my list as my family has left me to "do school prep"
  5. yes to cutting out the white carbs!! but I drink coffee for coffee...I love it as my favorite drink. I am up at 5:30 Mon-Friday 1 pot in the morning in my trusty keep it warm starbucks mug then I walk 4 miles at lunch time shower and eat lunch 2 large glasses of iced coffee 2pm-I seriously lay down for 20 minutes with in 2 minutes I am out. I used to set an alarm for 20 minutes, but now I wake up withing a few minutes of that time. I am rejuvinated and then have one more glass of iced coffee as I make dinner Water the rest of evening and at 10:30 or 11 I crash! Now that being said, I can sleep in on Sat til 7, and Sun til 8 and that is my catch up!
  6. oh my, we seemed to be of similar situations, I have just one year in this journey of home school. DS14, DS12, and twin girls 11. I really last year got math and english figured out. I tried to do history for each grade as to what they would each be doing and it was such a strain on ME! This year, I have the youngest 3, doing story of the world with heavy help from others that have gone before me Satori Smiles and Chronicles of the Earth(both blogs from mom's that have completed and in their kindness, blogged how they did it) YOU will need to purchase the SotW books. We also got Evan-Moor Ancient Civilization Pockets to do with it! My kids love history right now. and a quick shout out for Easy-Grammar, my kids and I both were not the best English students. We love it! Good luck to you, please pop over to my blog,(linked in siggy) and read some of the older posts, lots of tears, but we made it, and so far so good!
  7. please please say you are joking...if not here is the scoop, the onion is pure sarcasm and giggles of what ifs,
  8. We talk about costumes all month, but the making of them can not start til the week before...it is a funfun time we spend a couple afternoons that week making our costumes we have had dominos, we did their ages as the dots tables, box with table cloth, staple paper plates and glue plastic forks middle is for your head, and a hat with flowers in it my daughter was a homeless last year along with grocery cart they are pondering butterflies this year, and my one daughter wants to be metamorphis, a butterfly coming out of a black garbage bag cocoon!! I love the conversations up to it, and letting them ponder hows and whys!
  9. woo hoo, my week in a blog!! laugh, cry and laugh some more!! in my siggy!:lurk5:
  10. my hubby is an addict strawberry cheesecake from B&J and uses this flavor finder to see where it is in stock before heading out late at night
  11. just a note on jiggles, I grew up with the original School House Rocks, and I was horrible at GRammar!! I knew all the words to each jingle and remember everyone in school being excited when the "new" jingle came out! Easy Grammar grade 3 opened my eyes, to what a conjuction, interjection, lolly lolly adverb and adjectives really were! but.............. that being said, I have taught the whys to math... and wish I had this mnemonic for my kids last year, I think it would have helped them!
  12. science in public school is pretty non existent in our experience. My kids all had the same 2nd grade teacher whose major was science and she LOOOOOVED it, so they had a science nook, and whenever she could, that is where she would bring the kids. She was awesome!! I think perhaps, that is why homeschool curriculum is so experiment heavy! We are doing Christian Kids do Biology mixed with Mr. Q's freebie Life Science, I am in no hurry to finish, as I have one year left with elementary grades!! My high schooler had NEVER done a science report or experiment form. He is in Apologia...and along with Donna Youngs links for organization with Apologia, he is in his own little world for Science! Me, I grew up in California, and Science was all about how man ruined the world, and how man was horrible. I remember being so overwhelmed by the species dying, the rain forest dying and other bummers, that Science was dreaded.
  13. Amazing thread! Last year, Yeah, I took my kids to a free archery lesson...bows, and arrows, I had never even seen one. My hubby says, "oh, I used to have a bow, long ago." Really, that's cool My interested waned. The following Monday, he says, "Hey I can go with you to the archery." Yeah, cause it is torment to this momma, sit in the back and pretend to be interested. He goes, chats with an instructor, they have him shoot, and he is like a super duper marksman!! The best part??? He takes the kids now every Monday, I get 2 hours of no one in the house....NO ONE but meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! They let him shoot and I never knew he had even shot an arrow? 20 years married!
  14. the fun things they love are at the end of the day NaNoWriMo and learning computer (emailing each other..bha ha ha) reading adobe photoshop and spanish (easy glide?) so those are the first to go, when I am wasted...and they can do them on their own? so that helps
  15. aw big hugs to you! we adopted two indian/mexican girls...the foster momma had their hair in these cool braids and all the rubber bands matched their outfit. I remember looking at them, going oh no? I have curly short hair....because I am not a girly girl at all!! I tried to "french braid" their hair, fingers cramped and the results were horrendous!! it was bad...I have pics of them with what they call now, mom tried to crochet our hair!! I talked these girls of age 4 that loved dora the explorer into cutting their hair!! it was lovely!! Now fast forward 8 years, they do their own hair...well one does, the other, lets her sister do hers also!! with time this to shall pass ! ♥
  16. okay I am on the nanowrimo band wagon!! just go and look, laugh and enjoy writing for a few monthS???? WE are already laughing thru our writing time!! That is a first and it's FREEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
  17. I am saddened that the breast cancer has stooped to the level it has. I see the " I ♥ boobies" arm bands and t shirts and it to me is just sad..not making anyone aware of breast cancer at all, but a giggle at the expense of a woman's body. flame me if you will, I am sadden by the whole ad campaign and have lost friends to the horrible death sentence of breast cancer and find no humor in the "awareness" push of PINK, bra's hanging outside, or the guess what I am talking about (wiggle eye brows) little games to supposedly make people think about checking for breast cancer.
  18. My daughters were born in Roswell! Yep, they get the alien comment all the time. They are adopted, so I never lived there, but visited friends often that were pioneering a new church. It is a small community. I think they finally got a super wal-mart! They were one of the last communities in that size to get one in New Mexico. I did live 2 hours south in Alamogordo, for over 20 years. Roswell had a huge Grey hound plant (the bus) for a while. They have the Military Institute and A large Youth Conservation Corp at the old Military Base. The base is no longer open. It is the main office for southern and central New Mexico for Social Services. There are some beautiful buildings downtown and I remember a cool flea market. I am so curious as to why you are moving there?
  19. hey to ya!! one year to this hs stuff...it does get better! it is a bit of what the ?? with the local groups sometimes....but they do have some knowledge...lol don't throw the baby out with the bathwater so to say I have boys 14 and 12 and social butterfly twin girls 11...and they love homeschooling!! all of them...more than I imagined?? pop over to my blog in the siggy, and ask questions!! keep asking then ask more!!
  20. Thank you for that! We work with precious souls every day, hurt, broken, lives just a train wreck.....nope, not the homeless (well, some are, but some are working and have nice homes), but people. When they will draw a bit closer to God, I have seen the inner miracles take place. Pushing Him away causes more conflict in my experience with a short time in His service. If you just want an ear...pm me anytime. I am a woman who church didn't want and I didn't want church! Jesus Christ was my favorite cuss word, yet on 20 July 1988, I went to my knees in complete surrender. Admitted I was a sinner, lost in my ways, accepted the forgiveness of Christ thru his death and resurrection, and repented (turned from my ways and my will to God ways and plan for others). Wild time, not all up and "happy"...oh boy of boy, not all happy! I have screamed at God, told Him to just leave me alone! But, I have hope, and I would love to explain that hope.
  21. We started the workbook today, and buried our "inner editor" my kids are actually giddy about this... because I got them their own email accounts to be in the virtual classroom! I printed one workbook, and first 10 lesson plans!! I am a bit excited...and if any of you have done this before, I would love any helpful hints!!???
  22. these two blogs helped me make decisions what to get what not: http://satorismiles.com/category/2-sotw-lessons/sotw1/ and http://runofthemillfamily.blogspot.com/ I am sure there are more, but goodness, I feel like these families were with us on our SotW journey!!
  23. our first year I tried to do everything...and failed at it all...and the reading and researching made my brain feel like it was oozing out my ear. we got a math and grammar program that worked and we did it faithfully, read books for fun and did unit studies on what we wanted for history Lewis and Clark this year (2nd year) after learning a lot from others, we finally have History we enjoy SotW 1 and some fun things with it all the blogs from here that have gone before and conquered the book and all the activities, so I can pick and choose what will work for us!! and think we have science...so far christian kids do biology!!with eequalsmcsuared aka mr. q. added for humor and oh science sooooooooooo needs humor!! I think I have become addicted to searching for the perfect fit for my kids, that won't drive me nuts organizing it....but boy do I print some pages!! buy stock in ink!!!
  24. 46, actually 47 next month I got on the scale in March - 260 even...that 300 was looming and I cried and cried I vowed to do something and stop crying. I walked 1/2 mile and called my hubby to pick me up. We laughed I walked that1/2 mile the next day and made it home. 1 mile, and chaffed thighs! oh my gosh! Hemorrhoids and things to deter me. NO NO NO I was going to be healthy. Water intake, pump it up!! I cut out flour and sugar drastically as in 30 carbs total a day for 3 weeks, just to see something!! 3 pounds first week I kept at it til 20 pounds came off, then added in fruits and more vegi's no sugar, no processed flour, or rice high fiber (but uhm not to high) 40 pounds and am just finishing one month of maintain. I am walking 3 miles a day in one hour. I got on a trampoline!!! I had been over the max before and could not do it. It is a super exercise, more laughing but fun!! YOU CAN DO IT!!
