  1. I have not had time to read through this entire thread so forgive me if this was mentioned before. I have several friends with kids who went the community college route and transfered to universities later and without fail all of them have had to take extra classes at the universities to qualify for their degree causing them to be on a "5" year plan for college. My daughter just graduated high school and is going to Judson University in the fall. For her it make more financial sense to go 4 years to the private school than to take 2 years at CC then transfer for another 3 years at Judson. She should end up with around 15-20K in debt and we will have around 15K ourselves. College is not for the faint of heart. Like I said this has happened with several of our friends whos kids have transfered to different universities so please make sure that ALL the classes will transfer before just starting off at CC.
  2. I am another one who stumbled upon WTM from Google. I was searching for curriculum for NEXT year last fall (LOL, yeah I'm obsessive). I thought I had it all figured out but I am rethinking things after the way things went this year. (I have MS so I need a more relaxed way to teach than what I did last year). I too am so grateful for all the wonderful advice from all the moms who have come before me. I am not one to reinvent the wheel so I am grateful for all the help everyone has so kindly given!!!
  3. I have 3 "children" My 21 year old son and 18 year old daughter went to PS because I had no idea there really was a choice back then. I hated every day of sending them there and celebrated at my DD's highschool graduation last week more of the fact that she was DONE with PS than anything else! I swear my 21yo can't read past a 6th grade level and he graduated with HONORS. It is very sad to say the least. He is a good kid though and has a great job as an auto mechanic at a local dealership. 4 years ago we brought home our youngest DD from China and she will NOT go to PS. If there was a private high school near here I might consider letting her go to that but I don't see that as an option in our small town, it's PS or nothing. I love being able to be in control of who she is with all day, of what she will learn for that day, and the flexibility that homeschooling has to offer BOTH of us.
  4. Keeping you and your family in my prayers as well. :grouphug:
  5. Yes another sufferer here as well. I have been off and on meds for many years but now that my MS diagnosis has come in I know I will most likely be on them for the rest of my life. It is horrible to see that hole and know that you should walk around it but know you are going in anyway. Praying that you don't fall too far and can get some help either in the form of meds, vitamins, rest, doctors, or a combo of all of them.
  6. :iagree: Encourage her! My middle child wants to be a teacher as well. I worry what kind of jobs there will be for her when she gets out of college but I want her to find a career that makes her heart happy. She has even talked about becomming a ESL teacher or going to a spanish speaking country as a missionary so teaching can take on many rolls.
  7. I am another mom who has multiple sclerosis and is just beginning my HS journey with my daughter. Thankfully I only have one child at home now so we take frequent breaks and homeschool year round so I don't feel too stressed about getting it all in. I have a friend who also homeschools and the BEST advice she gave me is something that has already been mentioned here. Our job is to teach them HOW to learn. Where to go for answers will help them go far in life. Since I am so new to both MS (only diagnosed in July) and HS I don't have anything else to offer but a virtural hug and to know you are NOT alone! Dawn
  8. We have a cheapy one too. I use the thicker laminating sheets and make write on wipe off charts and even have one with each day of the week listed and a velcrow "button" on it and little pictures of weather, like sunshine, wind, rain drops, snow flakes, and we check the weather channel in the morning, add the picture that matches and write the high and low temps for the day. Each week we wipe it off and start over. Laminators are FUN!! Dawn
  9. Oh my gosh, my heart just hurts thinking about the pain you and your family are in right now! I am so very sorry for your loss. You will be in our prayers. Dawn
  10. Hi, I'm Dawn. I too am more of a lurker than a poster, but I have stepped off the edge and jumped into a few conversations already. I have been married to my HS sweetheart for 23 years this month. We have one bio son who turned 21 yesterday, a bio daughter who is 18, both of them went to public school. (DD graduates next week) and a just turned 6 year old that we adopted 4 years ago. We are homeschooling the youngest. We started with Heart of Dakota and lapbooking the letters of the alphabet but we finished last month and I haven't chosen anything for sure for next year. I was diagnosed last Aug with MS so I am learning all I can about that and homeschooling at the same time. Somedays it seems I have taken on more than I should. We have 2 cats and just discovered our little one is allergic to them as well as dustbunnies (which I have billions of) wheat, eggs and milk. I think that is about all there is to tell. I am reading the threads here in earnest trying to figure out how we will proceed with our homeschool classroom in the future. Dawn
  11. This post is very timely for me. We just found out that our 5.5 year old DD is alergic to Eggs, Milk, and Wheat. (as well as a few other things) I am just in the information gathering stage of how to eliminate these foods from our diets. I figure if she has to go without then so do I. I am wondering what people do when they live 45 miles from the closest big city (and by big I mean 100K). There really isn't a lot of choices for us. Does anyone know of any blogs or books that help with eleminating ALL 3 of these things from our diets? I don't want to hijack your thread, I'm guessing you could use the information as well. I wish you luck, it seems like it's going to be a difficult road (at least for us) Thanks, Dawn
  12. Yep, my 20 year old had to get a "new to him" truck last year and the best he could afford for his 6,000 was a 1997 Chevy 4x4.....It looks like heck but he had 2 offers to buy it off him within days of picking it up. Old trucks will last forever so don't be afraid to get something that isn't as shiney and pretty as the new 50K ones. Good luck in your search.
  13. Yes, twice. The second appointment included the mammo, an ultrasound and then a biopsy all in the same day (both times) In the biopsy the radiologist told me that they appeared to be benin and not to worry.....easier said than done but by the next year when I had to do it again I realized it was common. Good luck...oh and I don't know if all hospitals are like this but when I went back for my 2nd visit they schedule all second visits on the same day and we were given plush robes to wear and offered bagels and pastries to snack on....quite a difference from the paper robes and granola bars we were given the first time around.
