  1. Every so often I hear people say that their state doesn't have county boards for developmental disabilities or other resources for their children with disabilities. I found some websites that have state by state information on supports, and I thought the links would be useful to some of you. http://www.parentcenterhub.org/stateagencies/ http://medicaidwaiver.org/ HTH

  3. My friend has a daughter in public school (New York State) who has a 504 Plan. She receives some services like speech therapy, etc, through the school. My friend is considering homeschooling her daughter but she still wants to receive those services through the school. Is that possible?? She says her daughter does not have an IEP. I'm confused because everything I read about 504 is that it makes sure kids receive extra care they need like wheelchair assistance, nursing care like diabetes help, administering meds, etc. Of course, none of these would be an issue with homeschooling. So does a 504 affect homeschooling at all?? I'm so confused. Please answer if it applies to *New York State*. Links are appreciated as well! TIA
  4. Hi everyone, I recently joined this group and I'm not sure if there will be others out there within this forum that relate, but I need to try. I have 2 boys, ages 13 and 12. My 12 year old was born with a physical disability on his right side. Specifically this means that he used to walk on his right toes, instead of flat footed until he had surgery that mostly corrected this. He also doesn't use his right hand or arm much. He is contracted at the elbow about 40 degrees and his hand lacks any dexterity. That being said, he is a very bright and normal child. He wants to do everything that his brother does, which is good and bad, because his brother seems to pick up things quite easily. These interests that they both share are skateboarding, guitar, and playing hockey. Lately I've noticed my 12 year old getting depressed. Part of it is the age, but he's becoming sullen and mouthy, and I'm afraid to loose him to drugs and other negative ways of welf soothing. I feel it's very important to get him into something that he can be good at and will want to do. I need some suggestions from others out there as to activities I can get him into and ways to deal with his moods. Does anyone have a suggestion or thought? Thank you.
  5. Hi, all! I have a high-school aged son who had to drop out of 9th grade because of severe migraines. They continue, and are unpredictable; we never know from day to day whether he'll be functional or will be in his room in pain. He is now 18 years old. We had him being taught by a tutor, but he missed so many classes that this became unaffordable. Now I'm investigating online classes; the important thing is that they have to be self-paced, because he's not going to be able to keep up with a time-based (one assignment per week) class. Does anybody have high-school level online self-paced courses to recommend? He's a very bright kid who's been out of school for four years, and I'm at my wit's end. Apart from all the fears about his never being able to live independently, I need to make sure that he has the skills so that if the migraines let up, he can move on with his life. PLEASE no migraine advice; trust me, we have seen specialist after specialist after specialist, and we've tried everything that is appropriate to his case.
  6. Hi Everyone, I am fairly new to the board and am thrilled I found such a great website! I am wondering if there are any other parents on here with disabilities, specifically chronic pain and fatigue? I really want to homeschool my children but I am very concerned about having the energy to do it. I was homeschooled as a child from 1st grade until 9th because of my health issues, so I know about homeschooling in that sense but I don't know about it from the parents end. My parents were very laid back with me and I was more or less unschooled. Any suggestions, ideas, advice? Sometimes I think I am crazy even contemplating this... Marisa
