  1. Biography about Alvin C. York - the one MFW sells uses his actual journal entries throughout the book. It was a little difficult to read because of his lack of formal education, but it was so fascinating. Also, the movie Sergeant York about his life starring Gary Cooper. We are from TN so are huge York fans (plus the fact that I come from a long line of country "hicks").
  2. :iagree: me too! I was hours from civilization too!...well, sort of.
  3. Hugs and Prayers, Jean. Praying for discernment, strength, and relief from the pain as you juggle everything. :grouphug:
  4. Somebody else PLEASE post - I can't handle rejection by total strangers....:D
  5. Me too! I remember those days! I have fear of killing a thread, or offending (BTDT!), or just not contributing anything of value - actually BTDT to all of these!
  6. I read this article recently. My son takes 2000 i.u. of vitamin D daily per his neurologist. BUT, he is also on multiple seizure meds as well. It can cause extreme nausea, so you have to find your "right" dose. I can't take more than 5,000 i.u. daily. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/05/12/vitamin-d-deficiency-on-epilepsy.aspx
  7. I had to do something similar to this some years back when my first child was in highschool. I actually only had to submit this once to the Air Force Academy. No one else ever requested it. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you feel it needs to be or as they request. I tried to keep mine to one page per course. Cathy Duffy's curriculum manual had a form that I used for my template. I wish I could upload an example, but my forms are all on old diskettes! Ha! I am going to try to scan a copy so that you can get a general idea. I'm guessing this might be similar to what they are requesting, but if not, it might help some or at least give you a starting point. In the course standard section if the grade is weighted, I would note how. I would probably even change some things now in hindsight as I look at these. I wouldn't call a course "Language Arts" for a highschool course - geez. I would call it English I or similar. (I also wouldn't use sos for language again - it just happened to be a year that we were in transition and school wouldn't have been done otherwise). When he did Smarr Literature I listed all the books that were read for that course, but I can't find that one. Also, as a for instance, in his language course curriculum and description, and because he was involved in Civil Air Patrol, I would include in the description what he was doing that related to his language course. (i.e. Writing, preparing, and teaching classes to cadets at the Memphis Belle Memorial Squadron; Writing newspaper articles for MBMS; Writing an essay explaining....etc.) I also included Civil Air Patrol in his course curriculum for physics because he was taking flying lessons and getting his pilot's license, so there would be a brief description in the "course description" area of how many hours he was spending on this (I can't find that one either). If you only have a one semester course then you would note something like "1/2 (or 0.5) for fall semester of academic year 2012-2013". I'm not very good at this techy stuff; hopefully this will work. I didn't even have his name on the course descriptions because they were only part of his portfolio or "vitae" as they call them. I tried to scan a few that I could find that were a little "different" from each other. HTH, Penny ETA: When I look at back at the "mistakes" I made when my first one was coming up through homeschool as I looked through his stuff, it is a wonder that he made it! I knew nothing. We didn't even have the resources that are so readily available now. But, he did, and got a full scholarship to boot! He knew what he wanted, and he went after it.
  8. Hey, Jean - I LOVE Corrie ten Boom, but Bro. Andrew's wife's name was Corrie also. Thanks!
  9. Again, WTM is aware of the concern with the member and I'm sure they are taking appropriate steps to make sure that the member is not able to do what she did on the other site. I told the member that I had already received pm's where people were connecting the dots to here, and that she most likely would be discovered. I also told her that any repercussions she suffered were a result of her own bad choices. She accepts that and to my knowledge has voluntarily stepped away because of the shame she feels. She has also begun making things right with those she has wronged on the other board. Time will tell if she is genuinely repentant. We are talking up to and possibly over $2000 that she has taken from unsuspecting homeschool families so this could take some time to resolve. I still have unanswered questions about her story, and feel strongly that she does not need to participate in online homeschool communities. I am checking everyday to make sure she is keeping her word, and she is. The whole situation is very sad and regrettable. Racegirl was NOT her user name, but as besroma points out, it along with armsli were email addresses associated with her. I hope that what I have posted here will not kill this thread, because I do think people need to be aware and always report concerns like this that happen. We have to have trust in this community, and it has been damaged. Blessings, Penny
  10. You are right about the above but I'm pretty sure that is not why she was a victim if I remember correctly. I will pm her to let her know that she might want to edit her post with her email in it if possible. I will vouch for sattlers1 as a new poster. We have corresponded quite a bit throughout this whole process on the other board because we both "bought" the same thing. Thanks, Penny
  11. Actually there were over 20 "buyers" totalling over $1600 and that total doesn't include amounts for at least 9 of the buyers. We are hoping that there will be a resolution to this situation in the next few days. The seller seems repentant, but it is definitely a warning for us all to be careful. I posted about this when it first happened about the need to only use purchase Paypal which has already been mentioned. There is just no recourse for so many of the ladies who bought using personal. It seems that the seller is going to do the right thing and refund everyone. I am hopeful that will happen. I know more about Paypal now than I ever wanted to know. :glare: ETA: To my knowledge it is not the serial poster. Webmaster is aware of the situation and they will have to be the ones to make this decision about the member. I do not wish to add further injury.
  12. I LOVE this classroom - I saved it for inspiration http://pastorettesprogress.blogspot.com/2010/08/welcome-to.html and this one - http://chatterandclatter.blogspot.com/2010/08/school-room-week.html Ahhhhhh, don't they just make you want to learn? Good luck on the remodel! Penny
  13. Sarah, I don't know how I missed this, and even though we don't know each other, my children and I are praying even this morning that the surgery goes well. I'm just so sorry that your little one is going through this. We will be following your CaringBridge page and praying for you everyday through this crisis. My son was in the hospital for 11 weeks last year so I can imagine how you must be feeling right now. When you feel like you can leave his side, maybe even just go step outside for a minute and feel the sun on your face and that it is still shining. Praying for strength, healing, and peace for you all. Blessings and hugs, Penny
  14. I can't figure it out. It looks like she sold the same item to 3 different people. I don't understand how people can really think that they can do this sort of thing and get away with it.
  15. Well, another public service announcement....you may all want to check your privacy settings also on the board to make sure that they are only for "registered members" because I just got my first unapproved spam message. Wow, today is a day for firsts! :glare:
  16. I just had to file my first paypal claim in 20 years of homeschooling. I had purchased a LARGE expensive package of curriculum on another site and communication was good throughout. Except that I didn't receive my package and the dc# I was given shows that it was delivered to another address in another state. At first I thought it was an honest mistake, but as I started searching on the other site I discovered that I was one of many who had been mislead in this manner. The seller refunded some of the buyer's purchases but there were others like me who are still waiting for a refund. The seller's emails are now bouncing back, thus the need to file a claim which will take 11 days before any money can be refunded through paypal. But I am thankful that at least it will be refunded. This has just really been a sad experience for me because we, as a homeschool community, are usually very trusting and honorable people. Fortunately I always keep a copy of every email until transactions are completed, but this is just too bad. I almost always use cc paypal because for me paying the fee is usually just as cheap as purchasing a money order. Plus, this would have been an "ouch" if this had come from our checking account. Regardless of whether or not you use cc or regular paypal I would encourage you to not use personal paypal because of the lack of protection to you as the buyer. Some of the ones who were defrauded used personal and if she hadn't done the right thing by refunding them they would have had no recourse. I don't know if all who used personal actually did receive their refund. You can look on paypal's website to see that you have to select the "purchase" tab and not the "personal" tab and select "goods" (tangible) in order to be protected. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/Marketing/popup/UAeBay-outside Just wanted to give you a heads up while this was fresh on my mind. Also, perhaps more sellers will begin accepting paypal other than personal when they realize there are NO protections for the buyer. If I am wrong on any points about paypal, please feel free to correct me. Hope this helps someone else. Blessings, Penny ETA today: Well, just found out that someone else "bought" the same material as I did.
  17. Well, I am not qualified to give a detailed review to a linguist, but here is a recent thread I started about SOS where some who have used it far longer than I gave helpful info - http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=373901 I actually like SOS but have found the need to slow down some in order to retain the massive amounts of vocabulary. There are occasional Scripture verses and learning a foreign language is presented as a means of reaching out to those in other cultures with the Gospel. Hopefully someone with more insight will share. HTH Blessings, Penny
