  1. So does TWJ teach the mechanics of writing as well as the creative process? I've always been interested in Brave Writer, but I've never really understood it. Thanks!
  2. I just wanted to say that as a seller, I usually price my used curriculum 50% off. BUT then I have to add the high price of shipping Media Mail to it. So then it looks like I have jacked the prices up. Maybe it would be better to list stuff just with prices then add the shipping later on, instead of doing PPD. I don't know....Anyway, shipping prices have gotten ridiculous. And add Paypal fees to that.... UGH! :(
  3. Thanks, everyone, for the replies so far! I really wish I could wear him in a backpack, but I have a bad back (back surgery several years ago). That would be an ideal solution because he loves being in a backpack - my DH wears him in one a lot outside. The books I have read are No Cry Sleep Solution, SleepEasy, and the Good Night Lady's something or other. :)
  4. Hello ladies! This is kinda OT, but kinda not. I hope it's okay to post here. I am a mom to 3 children, ages 11, almost 10, and a 10-month old baby boy. The gist of the problem is that I cannot get school done because the baby does not sleep in his crib and does not sleep on a schedule! This is definitely all my fault, but I don't know how to change it. When we brought him home, I nursed him for about 2 months. He has a cow's milk protein allergy, so now he is on homemade goat's milk formula. But while nursing, I didn't really schedule feedings. So when he started on the bottle, he wasn't on a schedule, and to be just plain honest - I really don't have a clue how to put babies on a schedule. I never did with my other two. And he co-sleeps with us, from week one. It started out due to me needing sleep, but I kept it up because he had major acid reflux and would choke during his sleep, so I felt better with him laying propped on my arm to sleep. Now he doesn't have to sleep on my arm, but he still sleeps with us. Also, he does not get the amount of sleep that he needs. According the charts, he is missing like 3 hours a day of sleep he needs. So he is pretty fussy throughout the day. I have no idea how to make him sleep more! Okay, now that you know the background. Here is the problem. He does not have a nap schedule. Again, I don't have and never have known how to put a baby on a sleep schedule. So he goes to sleep at different times to nap, and I *never* know how long he will sleep - it could be an hour and a half or it could be 20 minutes. He sleeps longer if I lay down with him, if course. So I do not have much time to sit down and do school with my older two kids. This past school year we attempted to do Preparing. I really tried. We couldn't keep up with the readings. I rushed all the other lessons to try to hurry and do them before the baby woke up. We ended up not finishing Preparing at all. Now, the kids just do what they can on their own - Math, cursive, and reading. So my goal this summer is to get the baby sleeping in his crib and on a schedule. I have been reading numerous books on how to do this, ranging from crying it out, staying by the crib in a chair, and not letting them cry at all. I decided this past Friday night to start. But I didn't have a real clear picture in mind what I wanted to do. I tried laying him down drowsy, and then letting him cry while I sat by his side. It was terrible. I sobbed as hard as he did. I went out a few times to cry and came back and rubbed his head. He finally, finally went to sleep, but did that hiccuping sound from sobbing forever. I rocked him back to sleep at 4:00 am and he went back to sleep. The next day, I tried the same thing for naps, but he was having none of it. I think I just rocked him when he woke up. Last night, I rocked him to sleep and he laid in his crib. But 2 hours later, he was screaming, and would NOT go back to sleep in his crib. DH finally said to just bring him into bed with us. I did. (sigh) I just don't know what to do. I don't really mind him sleeping with us at night. He does get up once during the night for a bottle, which the books say he doesn't need it. But the daytime is what is making me want to do this. My older two kids are really behind in school, and I have GOT to have time to work with them. I just have to. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I know I need to do this but my heart hurts to see him crying so hard. He has never had to cry like that in his life, you know? But I know that it would be better to do it now than wait until he is older. Right? Please help....
  5. Cyndi, how did you make that graphic organizer?? I love it!!
  6. Thank you so much! :) I would be able to combine both of mine into one manual. Anyone else?? Jacquelyn
  7. Which curriculum do you like better for combining Biblical and World history together: MFW or HOD? I have an HOD CTC manual but don't have a MFW CTG manual, so I am having a hard time comparing them. Has anyone used both and liked one better than the other for ancient history? Thanks so much! Jacquelyn
  8. This past year we have used both BJU 2 and R&S 2. My kids are older (4th and 5th), but we haven't had any formal grammar, and I wanted to start off with the basics. We used BJU first. My kids *loved* it! They said English was their favorite subject! And I like that it includes writing assignments, which they loved doing. But...my 4th grade DD wasn't retaining anything! BJU moves fast. At least, I thought it did. So I found Rod and Staff 2 used, and tried it. Well, I don't think they *love* it, but I do! They don't hate it, but I don't hear them saying that English is their favorite subject now. It spends a lot of time on one subject, enough time for my DD to retain what she learned. We do a lot orally together, then I assign a section for them to write out. They are both finally learning to start a sentence with a capital letter and end with a punctation mark! LOL! So... my preference is Rod and Staff. My kids would probably say BJU. But since I'm the teacher, I get to choose! :) Blessings, Jacquelyn
  9. Thank you! Those thoughts helped a lot! :) It is good to know that I CAN read history with them, if I want to. And I see what you mean about the (S), (T), and (I). I didn't know before what that meant. My problem is that my two are NOT advanced readers at all. But in a couple of years, when we would do CTC, they may be. Donna T., which manual are you doing or are going to do this fall?
  10. I am struggling with whether to use MFW or HOD this year. I would like to make a decision on a curriculum and actually stick with it for more than a few months. :) I would not be using HOD's CTC this next year, but I have the manual that I bought used for cheap. I have been trying to compare it to MFW's CTG online sample (kinda hard to do). So I have been reading a lot of posts on here about MFW/HOD. One post, in particular, by Donna A. (I believe) had me thinking on something that I hadn't thought of before. HOD CTC has the student reading history and Bible independently. That is something that I'm not sure that I like or not. I think I would rather be the one to discuss Bible with my kids. But I wanted to get others' feelings about this, especially if you have used CTC before. Does it bother you that you aren't reading history and Bible with them? Do you think they are really understanding it without you there to discuss it with them? Thanks for any input!!! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  11. I have not read this whole thread, so I apologize if this has been answered. :) I am interested in doing this because my baby is due Sept 12. It would be nice to get everything organized before then. My question: If I go ahead and tear all the worksheets out of the books (like MUS) and file them, then when the child completes them during the school year, what do I do with them?? Do I keep them all, separate them into subjects, or just put them back into the folders? Thanks for any input!! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  12. I would love a CBD free shipping code, if anyone has one to share! My DH also cleaned and threw out my catalog!! UGH! Thank you!! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  13. Very good post!!! One question: Does TOG have Bible study/scripture study, like MFW does? I know that TOG has church history and a Biblical worldview. Just wondering if I would have to add in Bible study to it. Thanks!! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  14. We are using SL Science 1 this year. The kids and I all love it! This is the only science we've tried that I know we can stick with. :)
  15. If I am using AAS with 2 children who will be at different levels, do I need two different 2X3 magnetic boards? Or will it be a pain to set the boards up for two different kids every day? We are only on Step 1 of Level 1, so we haven't really started using the tiles yet, so I don't know yet how it will go. I only have one magnetic board right now. PS. I bought my board at Target for around $15, I think. I would definitely look around before ordering from RR. :) Jacquelyn
  16. I just cannot decide what to do! I want to do AS1, starting this summer, with my 7 1/2 year old DD and 9-year old DS. I need to buy the IG from WP and the Timeline. I just can't decide about the MYO Am. History book and the MYO Native American book. I did AW 4 years ago, and we only did a few of the MYO pages because they were so redundant. I sometimes see these for sale with only a few of the first pages done, so I'm wondering if people don't like them. I really wish I had a better feel for them, what they are like. I guess I would have to buy two, and that is a lot of money! But I don't want to NOT buy them and miss out on a great notebooking resource. Help! (I hesitated to ask this on the WP forum in case people didn't want to write anything negative about WP's products, so I thought I would come here) :) Thanks! Jacquelyn
  17. Thanks, everyone, for your advice! I really appreciate it!!! :) Jacquelyn
  18. If I order just WP exclusives (like the AS1 IG and MYO History books, timeline, etc), will I be more likely to get my order quickly? I know people are having problems with the books and whole packages arriving late. But I was just wanting the IG mainly and some other WP items. And I was wanting to start very soon (like...yesterday! LOL!). But I don't want to wait a month for my stuff. Any thoughts? Thanks! Jacquelyn
  19. Help! I have 2 children, ages 7 and 8, and I want to buy Artistic Pursuits K-3. Do I need just one book or one book for each of them? Thanks! Jacquelyn
  20. If you use Saxon Math 1, could you check your Teacher's Guide and see if 1998 is the current edition or not? If it's not, does anyone know if a 1998 Teacher's Guide will work with the current student pages?? Thanks a bunch! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  21. Thanks so much!! That makes much more sense! Hopefully, I will be able to find some more MWS guides within the next year. Thanks again! Jacquelyn
  22. I recently bought the blue My World Science teacher's guide and student pages. I love it!! I am so disappointed that it's not published anymore. My question is this: Is one guide (3 units in each guide) supposed to last one year? Or are you supposed to do several guides per year? If I only used one guide a year, I would only get to do one lesson a week. Does that sound right?? Thanks so much for any help!!! Blessings, Jacquelyn
  23. Ugh! Sometimes kids do repeat what their parents say...but I agree. You should calmly explain to him what is going on. Hopefully he will understand! :) Jacquelyn
