  1. I introduced this poem to ds last week in FLL. He groaned about memorizing. It is the first poem he has ever balked at memorizing. We are currently memorizing The Preamble, so I may just skip the memorization of it. It is encouraging though to see so many have memorized it and enjoyed the challenge.

  2.

It does look pricey, but I'm spreading it out over the year. First I had my logic-stage son pick from the list of experiment kits in TWTM. I've only got what I need for this quarter & will order more as we go. Janice VanCleave books (Biology for Every Kid, Human Body for Every Kid, Plants, etc.) are invaluable. Instead of ordering the fingerprint experiment kits, there are instructions for how to do it on your own w/o a pre-purchased kit in the JVC books.

    Good advice on JVC!

I really don't want to keep any of those things inside my house, so either we will have to find containers that they absolutely cannot escape from, make space in the garage (only a little better), or keep them outside in the summer. We'll see. Carolina Biological Supply is willing to answer a lot of questions over the phone IME.

That's the other issue I'm trying to figure out. Where will I put all this stuff?

  3. I don't know how Elemental Physics is set up, but is it possible you have one boy do the project on one day and the other on another day. Maybe they could each work some what privately, take a picture and then take it apart. Then at the end of the week, they can come together to each show their work and explain to each other what they did.

This is a good idea. It would take some coordination on my part, but I think that might be an option worth exploring. Thanks!

  4. My DS tends to get overwhelmed with all the pieces and steps w/K'nex. (Though he doesn't with Legos. Go figure.) I am his 'helper.' We sort out the pieces we need, then work together. I do think the K'nex snaps together hard. Some of the pieces DS simply cannot connect on his own. He tries and, if he can't get the pieces together, I will help him.

I understand your eldest having a tendency to 'take over,' as I have the same problem. :001_huh: It is a good life lesson to sit back and wait to help until asked. One I obviously need to work on myself. :D Might be good to have them work together, if you can monitor. Or have them write out a schedule: Eldest leads one project, youngest leads another project.

I just have the only, but do have an older sister so I understand your concern.

Ds2 may need the help, but certainly would rather him seek help on his own then have big brother take over and do for him.

I like your idea about have one lead one project and then switching. I'll discuss that with dh and get his input.

  5. Thank you. This is helpful. My biggest concern is ds1 has this tendency to take over and not let ds2 do any of the building. ds2 is already tagging along really, but I want him to have the opportunity to really experience things for himself. Since I don't have any previous experience with Elemental Science, I just wondered what has worked for those who have used the program. Especially those that have shared it among siblings.

    Thanks for your input.

  6. I really like what I've seen so far with TOG. I guess my struggle/question comes from when to start using it. My oldest is 4. I know that some suggest using it right from the start and some suggest starting the second time through.

If you start using it from the beginning, do you buy all the extras (map aids, evals, writing aids, etc) or do you wait and pick them up the next time around? When do you start using the writing aids program? Or do you use something else in it's place? Do you use a set spine or use different resources?

I'm trying to decide when to purchase and these questions are driving me (and thus the dh) nuts. Thanks for helping!

I really love TOG. I know there are many varying opinions as to what you should buy. But I would keep it simple with littles. There is plenty of time for extras later. Before buying the whole kit and caboodle, I'd recommend buying one unit. Try it...see how it actually works for you.

My other recommendation is to really think about what your kiddo is interested in. I have one that can't get enough history and one that really isn't all that interested in learning at all (but he's young). For my history buff, I assign all the reading and he devours it. For my other, I read to him the STOW, and the LG core books, geography, and that is it. I don't expect anything else out him really b/c he's 6 and just not all that into it yet. For him, its exposure. He'll have plenty of time to dive in deep later. We try to do one hands-on activity a week which involves everyone.

  7. I think, yes, the CDs are more helpful. We use them multiple times a week for chanting in the car. It really helps for getting the chants and vocabulary stuck in the head. I dream them sometimes....but that's another topic.

FWIW, I'm teaching LFC at our co-op and I just ordered a group of chant CDs from Classical Academic Press for my students. I'd say with the text, it's the other essential for the program.
