  1. I'm not trashing the curriculum as a whole. I even stated in my original post that their are many aspects we have enjoyed. I really feel like this book should be replaced. While I'm happy that it has worked for many, too many of the gadgets have been total duds.

I will further keep my opinions to myself. I am not eloquent as many here with my words.

  2. I really wanted to like Elemental Science Physics. I love the format and the notebooking pages. We've even enjoyed the projects and quizzes. But I have absolutely no love for the Gizmos and Gadgets books. Most of the contraptions that we have made DO NOT work. I'm really bummed that something that really could be a great has turned out to be worthless to us. FWIW, we will finish the year, and I'll read Gizmos to them. But there is no use wasting our time trying to make anything from that book. Unless it is replaced with another book, I wouldn't recommend Elemental Physics.

  3. I don't like the LA integrated in. I very much might have considered coming back to SL, but I don't like the natural approach to LA. Having the LA schedule with the core just is more paper that I don't need.

I do like what I see that they did with the notes. That does look like a huge improvement. Mapping...eh, still undecided about it. Not sure it appeals to me. I really wish SL mapping was more like the mapping in TOG.

I will say that the buzz word in video is "intuitive". I didn't count, but it sure was in there A LOT!

  4. Has anyone submitted the list to TOG to add to the Loom? Or do they not add it because they'd lose Bookshelf Central sales (I imagine most people purchase off Amazon anyway)?

This would be nice to have it on the Loom. But I don't think it's in the works yet.

  5. Agreeing with both of you here. While I understand where each side is coming from, it is frustrating. My time is limited as it is. One of the reasons I buy curriculum is to help me, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel all the time.

    Sigh...reinventing again.

  6. I wish we could get 5 lessons in one week done! Sometimes dd will make 6 - 8 mistakes on the written practice and a few on the warm up and we have to go through those before she can move on to the new lesson. Math can take awhile on those type days to finish. Does your ds make many mistakes?

    Thanks

Oh, yes! He makes mistakes. Mostly, because he is careless. We are working on that. When we started Saxon he missed at least half of the problems because of that. Now, he may miss 1 or 2. He is extremely distractable. So, I sit next to him while he works each problem. We've found it helps him stay on task, and I catch the mistakes early before he has to correct every.single.problem.

Sorry math is rough right now.:grouphug:

  7. We are doing it 5 days a week. We started our year with MUS epsilon, but dropped it due to constant tears. A friend gave me Saxon to use, and it is working beautifully for ds. No more tears and his confidence is up!!! My plan is have him work 5 days/week through May then, 3 days/week this summer. He should finish by the end of June that way and be ready to pick up 7/6 in Septmenber when we start back.

  8. Ds has saved enough money to buy a Kindle Fire. I'm looking at getting him a cover to put it in, but Wow! there are gazillion of them! I'm looking for recommendations for one that is sturdy, reasonably priced, and easy to keep clean.

One more question: Any other accessories I need to add to the Kindle that I'm not thinking of? Chargers? Screen protectors?

  9. That was about the point ds starting hating math. We spent weeks on that lesson before he got it. We went on to the division book and when multiplication popped up in review he was still missing problems. Worked though that, hit the fraction book and that was it. Ds just lost his love of learning. He dreaded math and started saying he was stupid. Which absolutely is not true. I've switched him to Saxon and he is gaining his confidence back slowly as he relearns some concepts the old-fashioned way. Our math battles have stopped too.

  10. I hate to sound jaded, but he did not take renters to make sure everything was good with the house..he took it b/c he could not sell it 2 years ago!! He can not afford to carry so much debt....builders have been gobsmacked!! I feel for them...

To give a fair offer, find all the most RECENT comparables in that area...find the per sq. footage SELLING rate, not ASKING rate...make sure you are seeing the full picture (no extra incentives at closing for carpet/roof/etc.)...with the market the way it is now, YOU are in the driver's seat. It is business...not personal. I would offer 10-15% LESS than what comparables have sold for...he has the option to come back to negotiate. It can go back and forth 3-4x...even if he does not come back with a counter, you can always recounter with a higher offer. But, that is the best way to handle these kinds of transactions. And, sadly, I don't trust a lot of realtors...some will only pull the high end comparables, you want ALL the comparables...throw out the ones that are not 'comparable' (15 years or older or not the same number of bedrooms etc.) and then take an average of per sq. foot sales.

Houses that sold for $100 per sq. foot 5 years ago are sellling as low as $75 per sq. foot now... a large chunk of change on a house.

Just read you looked at it with the realtor who represents him...this is a big no-no. She will only pull positive comparables...I would call a separate realtor and have them represent you, UNLESS she is willing to only take 3-4% realtor fee since she is representing both parties...it is usually never recommended to do this (we did, but we worked out a better deal b/c of it)..many things can be written into the contract that are for the builder not you, at the minimum get a 2-10 HOW warranty...ask him to correct those items, get an inspection and make the contract contingent upon it, do not use the inspector she recommends..at the very least, contact other realtors and ask for the names of 3 inspectors...you can even call teh county builders office (where permits are pulled) and ask them which inspector they recommmend.

You don't sound jaded. This is why I asked. The HIVE is great at telling it like it is. This a huge decision! We want to make the right one!

We have already discussed getting an inspector independent of the builder. I don't want bias in that area. Dh has pulled the tax records and some comparables. It is amazing what you can do with google!;) We would definately ask for a home owner's warrenty.

  11. It's been on the market 5 months. The agent we looked with works with this builder. I'm a little concerned that she may have bias for the builder. But she has shown it twice (once to just dh before I got here and now to both of us). I feel like to go get another agent might be a little underhanded--but maybe not!

It's not overpriced in comparison to other homes. But it does need some things. The laminate counter in the kitchen is coming off in one spot. There is a spot in the foyer that needs the tape & float repaired. Those are minor fixes for the builder. The vinyl floors are just plain ugly, but that is my issue. Dh and I would plan to tile those eventually.
