  1. I was wondering if RS games can be used with other math programs like BJU or Rod and Staff? My dd7 is okay with doing math but I want her to really know he facts and I am not about to start with flash cards.... been there done that!!!! (too many tears- more from me then her) However I would like a book or set that breaks down the types of math problems to work on.... so if she starts to have issues with ... say multiplying by 6's then I can break out the book and check out the games for that. (I could also use this help:D). Would RS games be what I am looking for? I love the little fraction chart that is included in the kit.... Is is smarter to just get the Kit- it looks cheaper? Thank you all..... I need hand holding now:blushing:
  2. I would like to hear what other think as well.... I have printed out the samples and plan to match the corresponding topics with our spine. We will be starting US History in the fall and these look great.
  3. 2 more things..... Do I need to purchase everything or only the worktext...... Also (silly question) are the pages those that are shinny and hard to write in pencil on.... (i hate those :D) Thanks again
  4. Then I realized that the program that I wanted to use didn't have somethings I was looking for... anyway.... Has anyone NOT liked BJU math? I would be interested in your thoughts on 3rd grade.... I saw the samples and how it showed step by step in the student text and I really liked this.... It looks like it is laid out to give the child a solid understanding on how/why to complete math problems.... How do you and your dc think about BJU math? It is teacher intensive? Around how long do you take each day to complete? Thank you, Kate;)
  5. :sad:I was afraid of that! Thank you though! Kate
  6. I didn't find it to be user friendly at all.... I got too frustrated just trying to create a page for my then K'er! So I just downloaded some school fonts from http://www.dafont.com and create my own on Word if I need to..... HTH's Kate
  7. I was planning on using this next year for my dd(third grade next year). We are currently using MCP and its okay but I wanted a more solid program. I was looking into Rod & Staff and I have the sample book but the sample pages don't show that the student pages have examples.... What I mean by this.. is there a "how to Do" type thing at the top of a new lesson showing how to complete the problems? or does it have to be worked out by the teacher separately? Does that make sense? Thank you!:)
  8. AWESOME!!!! Thank you so much for posting!:grouphug:
  9. I have our curriculum, priced out to be around $1,000 for one child! This does include a pricey microscope though and many books to be used for a couple of years.... and this would be if I bought everything new...... hth, kate
  10. I'm going to be using American History Stories Vol 1-2 by: Mara Pratt this coming year and Vol 3-4 the next year..... I will use them as a spine and then add additional books on each chapter or so.... along with other activites.... I thought these books look better for my daughters age and she would grasp more info then say An Island Story (which she listens to from Audio book while she plays) If you click the link they are towards the bottom.... HTH, Kate
  11. I know at the beginning stages you (the parent) are to write the child's narrations down for them... but until what age or is it by their ability?...... We have not done much of this yet and my dd is in 1st/2nd..... next year we will be working on 2nd/3rd..... but in language arts she is mainly working on a 2nd grade level (late b-day) thank you! Kate
  12. I would have to say how to read.... reading was always such a hard subject for me and I hated it... I never finished a novel that was required in school or on my personal time until I was an adult..... so to be able to teach my dd not only to read but listening to her read makes me tear up every time.... silly I know but I just can't help it.... I think it has given me confidence as a mom and person..... no curriculum baby just her and I and the book :D YEAH! hehe I know.... i'm a dork but i can't help it :p Kate
  13. I haven't heard of this eighter..... Interested in what other have to say.... Are there any sample mp3's to listen to? It seems to be pretty pricey for history curriculum.... (maybe that just me but $20 per month for my 3rd grader is alot to me)..... Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  14. Thank you all!... The book is a great idea. However if anyone else is trying to find it, the author is Shar Levine.... not Shari ...:) It took me a little bit to find..... Is the Brock Magiscope really that good..... it looks like a toy. I don't understand how the slides are suppose to stay on? I'm not understanding the logic too much but I guess I'm off to read more about it:D Thank you all! kate
  15. I want to purchase a microscope for my dd7 in the next month or so (I'm hopping for tax money soon... we still haven't got dh's W2!) Anyhow, I don't mind spending alittle bit more money on getting a good quality product.... something to last at least through middle school age...... I want something to use often and not sit on a shelf and never be touched..... I want one that is easy to use and that it is not easily broken by a child (not that she is rough with things)..... any ideas? Also would you all recommend a digital eyepiece? I you have one do you use it often? I thought it would be neat to blog about what we checked out and the photo.... also my dd could email the pictures to her family and even add then to our nature book......Are they easy to use? I saw this one from Home science tools..... its review sound great..... wanted to see what you all thought? Thank you all, kate
  16. We live in a small town house (don't know how many square feet) but our bill is about $275- $350.... It just keeps getting worse. We rent so we can't replace the windows or appliances to help energy  (wish we could buy but right now we are just trying to stay afloat) We are looking into other ways to save alot of money.... we have limited everything down to the bear minimum and still getting no where so we are working on another plan..... HTH Kate
  17. We're suppose to take a vacation? .... hhhhmmm can you tell that to my budget b/c it just wouldn't understand......:(...... We have never taken any type of vacation..... However I would love to go camping (as simple as that my be) .... On the up side, my brother called me last night to see when he can fly my dd and I out to visit him for a week or so.... He lives in San Francisco and I wouldn't need to worry about the cost... nice treat hun? Now I need to think if I can really survive a week with my big brother with out it ending in his death!:D (we are completely two different people) so it looks like we might get a little vacation after all..... but my dh couldn't go so not too excited about that...... my dd and I will use it more for sightseeing and learning about the area....
  18. I have to say that in some ways I understand but this is how I look at it...... I too have only a high school diploma and very much don't deserve it(not that it is even worth anything at all) I only passed Chemistry b/c my high school boyfriend was in baseball and my teacher was his coach and I spent ALOT of time helping the team..... The only reason why I passed world history was b/c the boy sitting next to me gave me all the answers and he also sat next to me in French -where I gave him all the answers (I took french twice) I understood math to be able to pass (we really only got checked on if we took notes from the day before or not... I only passed English all 4 year b/c my boyfriend was a grade ahead of me and an honors student.... he wrote ALL my papers! However.... I know that it bothers me so much that I haven't learned anything that I want better for my dd..... I don't want her to feel "stupid" as I do most of the time....I know that I am not stupid as I do have a great head on my shoulders.... I "know" way more then other 26 year olds out there.... however my knowedge is in different areas...... I see homeschooling my dd in a classical way as a blessing..... I am able to learn all these wonderful things ..... but most importantly I get to learn WITH my dd! I get to give my dd the skills to never feel stupid.... I teach her that at any time you can learn something that you don't already know...... I get to teach her that even mommy has to try new things and that in itself is a blessing....... I haven't read what other mom's have said but I just wanted to give you my 2 cents..... the day you stop learning is the day you die...... ( I forget who said that) Just because you weren't taught this way doesn't mean you can't "teach" this way.... It just means that you learned that you own education was wrong and you want to fix it for the next generation..... in my book that makes you smarter then any PHD.....!:D
  19. I'm not sure I am one to reply or give advise. I only have one child (even tough at times she makes it seem like she's five kids!). However something struck me when you mentioned that you would not be able to breathe again..... hmmm Jumping back into homeschooling might not be the best answer.... I would focus of what the "main" situation is and work from there....... Maybe afterschooling might work better.... at least for the next year while you finish school..... Homeschooling is not for everyone.... I don't mean at all that you "can't" do it... but other options may be even better for your family (does that make sense? ----- It was not meant to come out mean..... I was trying to state that your family might have to work though your other better options) Okay I guess I can't write today...... I'm sorry It was just my 2 cents.... I will be praying for you all! Kate
  20. I dont think so.... I silly dh put his "razor" phone on the counter and we think it got knocked into the dishwasher by the cat.... So after it got a good washing we found out.... it turned on by after we let it dry it was no good...... We took it in but they said they couldn't do anything with it... so we were with out a phone..... Sorry this happened, i know it stinks but it may not work again.... (i hope I am wrong!) This all happened after I told him that he was a nut for spending $350 on a PHONE!!!!! oh well he learned! maybe put it my a heat vent..... not on it but close to it?
  21. OK if I were to join and log all my books into this would it be able to tell me which books I have on a topic..... Ex....can I search "US history" and all the books that I own about this topic would come up? Can I make a note about them to tell me where they are located in my house :) (we have to store book shelves everywhere not just in one room) ..... I want to make sure that I understand this right.... I really don't need to interact with people that have the same books as I do but would love to use it as my own personal Library catalog.... Am I understanding this correctly? Oh and one more thing.... can you print out a wishlist? Thanks, Kate:p
