  1. Good... thank you both! No i do not have either the WP or TQ.... I am trying to see what is really needed to purchase.... I love the look of WP (with their book choices) but my dd would not be into all those activities and I would not use the guide. I also want to take advantage of our library and not purchase all the books. So I like the flexability with TQ but was wondering if some of the wonderful books are listed that are part of WP Am story. Thanks again!
  2. I was wondering if most or any of the WP books are listed in the truthquest guides for American History? I really like Wp books but we don't need all of it... but I love the flow of the truthquest guides and wondering if most of the same books are included or if I would need to write them in the proper places to make sure I include them. Thank you, Kate
  3. AMEN SISTER! Around here they use New books every year.... Most are all Workbook type, even the higher levels. Schools are also not purchasing items for wholesale prices.... even stuff like paper towels for the bathrooms.... everything is high cost.... So all the money we give to our school systems is being thrown away not spent wisely..... Just me 2 cents
  4. Target sells Generation Doll outfits for around $10 that are cute..... But we mostly buy the AG ones (only b-day gifts and Christmas gifts) mainly from grandparents.... My dd is very familiar with quality not quantity ;) Hope that helps kate
  5. I haven't checked these past couple days b/c we have been hit with a stomach bug .... but you all have such encouraging advice.... I just mentioned it to my dh and he shot through the roof !!!! LOL oh well ... What a BOY! When we start to feel better I will take her out for a little shopping.... Thanks again! Kate
  6. Oh Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I was thinking I was going crazy! However I guess I should have expected this.....I am not exactly small (DD)! My poor little girl she has no clue whats up ahead! LOL Thank you all..... Now how do I go about talking with my husband about this? LOL he is going to flip!
  7. I am a bit lost.... I can't remember at all when I got when, let alone shopping for one... I do know it was too late and I never talked with my mother about this stuff. My dd is only 8 1/2 and these past 6 months she has changed so much! I one month she went through to pant sizes! She is not fat but she doesn't have chicken legs anymore.... But any how I am noticing that she is "popping" a little out of her shirt. I have been requiring her to wear undershirts but I am wondering should I get her some bras.... She hasn't mentioned anything to me but I was just wondering what other would do? Should I get any and if so should they be like the sports bra type or the little girl bra style?:001_huh: Thank you so much!
  8. Thank you both! Great Idea Snowwhite about purchasing just one to see if it will work well... Lucidity- We do spread our school work out over a year and not you typical 36 weeks so that would work well Thanks again! Kate
  9. Is it hard to work in the Time Travelers Series with American Story 1? I think that the books would be more up my dd alley but I really want to add the TT series.... I think the All-American Set would may be too much for my only dd..... I'm just trying to weigh all our options and get some ideas.... Thank you all, Kate
  10. thanks for your answer.. that's a bummer.... oh well.... I just wish they had more samples too... Thanks again! Kate
  11. Can you tell me if the Reader Schedule has questions for the books included or is that only in the L/A guide? I am thinking about the doing my own thing for L/A but wanted to include the readers.... Thank you, Kate
  12. That would make sense.... but the notes refer to the Regular reading of Phoebe the spy and not the book on that weeks schedule- The Cabin faced West...... oh well..... I now I'm missing something so simple:D..... It's hard to tell this stuff with a small sample of the curriculum.... KWIM? Thank you so much for your input! Kate
  13. I was looking at the sample and am a little confused. ..... In week 18 (if using the Regular readers) the child would be reading The Cabin Faced West but the Writing assignment page has them working on activities that go with the Advanced Reader, Phoebe the Spy..... Am I just not looking at this right or am I missing something? If your child is using the regular readers then do you use the advanced as a read aloud and still do the activity page or do you skip that week? I'm so lost :001_huh: Thank you!
  14. I was looking at their catalog and was wondering if anyone using Core 3 History could explain something to me.... If they are going for a literature approach why are they using a "textbook": The Landmark History of the American People and the workbook: The Story of the USA.... I understand that they are used as a spine but do your children find them dull? Would these be too old for a early 8 year old? Also would it be possible to use The Story of the 13 Colonies as the spine instead and narrations on it instead of the workbook stuff? I love the readers and read alouds and all the resources in the IG to help discuss with the child about the books and the use of the stories within their language arts I was just wondering about your thoughts on the text and workbook.... Thanks you:D
  15. Maybe the core 3 regular readers will work fine...... I can't seem to get a hold of the LA sample for core 3..... I see their sample for core 4 in the catalog but I wanted to see the dication and writing samples.... b/c I think it would be great to add these subjects all in one... KWIM? Thank you
  16. What I mean by that is..... I am trying to create a schedule and using history readers and incorporating into our language arts..... (like sonlight) However Sonlight Core 3 looks a little old for my dd...... and we are going to be studying American History next year...... so my head is going a mile a minute. I think I can find discussion question on the net but how to you come up with other creative ideas to incorporate this all together..... We will mostly be using the 2nd grade readers from Winterpromise American Story 1 with some changes here and there..... Any ideas?
  17. Ok, I am beginning to loose my mind...... I am putting together my own sort of Winterpromise/Sonlight type curriculum..... History as the focus and using read-alouds with readers that also work with American History.... My problem is how do you come up with disscusion questions, Langauge arts activities, etc. If it were just me I would finish the book and say "Wow, that was a great book!" (sad- I know) but where do I go from there? How do I figure out what to point out to my daughter and what to discuss......? Does the Sonlight instructors guide do this? or the Winterpromise guide? Should I just buy a guide to hold my hand? I know this sounds silly but my head is spinning! I wanted to pick books that I would like to use from Truthquest and All through the Ages...... I can't pull up the sample to the core 3 instructors guide to see Sonlights Language arts and what it entails. Any ideas? Thank you!
  18. I also have an only(about the same age in fact) and one thing that I have learned and always need to remind myself it to chill...... What I mean by that- Most Hsing parents must schedule because they have more then one. It would be much more complicated it I was trying to combine my daughter plus one or two or even 9 other children..... I think there is no other way then to schedule. However with my only we are able to go with the flow. If it is a beautiful day out the the school books are put aside and we check out other things. Example, today we cooked brownies and made lemonade to prepare for a lemonade stand that she wanted to do tomorrow. We also made signs for it, took care of our kittens that we rescued a couple of weeks ago. Then the kids in the neighborhood came home from school early and it is beautiful out so go we go to play! We tend to get thing done at other times. Even though some people think having an only is a piece of cake it is definitely not! For the most part I am her only play mate 24/7! And because I don't have any other little ones to run after all day I have extra time to spend worrying ! it is a cursed blessing :tongue_smilie: I am really working hard on putting an end to it really:001_smile:. As for the independent work; at this age my daughter does better when we do thing together. However I don't "hold her hand" while she does it..... I will explain her math, or copywork or whatever it is and then work on the dishes, or run down to do a load of laundry (simple things) Some times she even reads to me while I'm in the shower! However most times I am reading my bible at the same time. so I am there but not really working with her on the work. I never want to be able to say ...."Here, do this" we just talk it all out. As far as scheduling: I use to think that I needed and day by day schedule but that is just not be ..... I have a general idea of what I want to cover in a year and we go from there..... We do school year round (very loosely) On a typical day we wake up late (we are night people). Take care of our cats, get ourselves something to eat, I check my emails (she listens to books on CD or itunes), I jump in the shower, we try to do "school work" outside if possible, so we gather our things and take them on the deck. She decides what to start with first (math, copywork/dictation, reading, english) and we go from there..... We typically do the "next thing" . If something interrupts our day (normally it doesn't) then we finish up what we are doing and go from there.... Somewhere in the middle we have lunch and chores..... Next year we are taking a more CM approach to Science and History so we will have many read-alouds and projects. We will probably start with that first in the morning and work from there.... We also have co-op in the mornings on Tuesdays (music, art, gym, science lab) and if the weather is nice we go after to do a nature hike..... some days we just go to the library and read. I try to relax and not freak out , I want to give her a childhood and memories. not book work after more book work..... we read together and talk all the time about so many things.... Our family is going through alot of family and financial issues for the past couple years or so and we talk about that in a good way and our emotions relating to it all... I'm sorry but I didn't read what other posted in response but I just thought I would add my 2 cents...... sorry to ramble on..... If you would like to talk more please feel free to email me. its always great to meet others HSing onlies ( we are a few in a million:tongue_smilie:) HTH's Kate
  19. Homeschooling goals, Life skills, etc. I'm putting together my list for this next year and want to see what you all have on your minds.:001_smile:
  20. Too cute! There are 4 of them. 3 black and 1 gray striped. We will be taking care of them until they are old enough to go to great homes. We will most likely be keeping two of them.... Any name ideas.....? The gray on is a girl. (cutie and adventurish) 1 of the black ones is a girl (very sweet and shy) and the other two black are boys. one is shy and the other is a little lover boy/problem child! oops! I can't seem to add the photo but click the link below to my blog and you can see them there.... THANKS!
  21. What a awesome experience your family will have! Do you think there is enough room for us?;) I hope you will be able to blog about your trip and plans..... I was talking about this with my husband for plans in the future and it would be wonderful. Have you looked at this site? http://homeschoolacrossamerica.com/ it may be helpful and inspiring. also the cd's would work nicely with reducing space in the RV , just print as you go..... should work nicely! Good luck!
  22. I haven't used them yet (planning American history for fall) but I have printed out the samples and I'm currently working on blending these with our spine and truthquest. They look great and I have heard nothing but great things about them. I saw winterpromise but I like putting together the subject to work perfectly with us and there is no way I would be able to afford their price .... HTH's kate
  23. Here's the link to Tami's blog. Also I printed out the sample of the chapter books that go along with it and they look great..... I can't wait to get started...... Thank you all!!!!:D
  24. Anyone use this with there daughters? I know Tami has created a group and I love what she has added to her blog about this and was wondering if others use this too. either with your curriculum or separate..... What ages our your daughters who are doing this? How has it worked for your family? Have you created a club or just working through it on your own?
