I still think there is something wrong with my granite…it’s continues to be rough…You can  feel and hear it when you wipe it down. Sigh.

Probably needed to be polished more (not put on more polish but polish the actual stone). I wonder if you could ask a stone contractor about it.

But, I think since you know the name of your granite, you could order a slab of it from somewhere else for your island. Yes, it will come from a different source than your other counters. But granite slabs have enough expected variation within them, that I think that it may not matter if the island looks slightly different from the counters.

IF you have a stone warehouse near you; you can tell them the name and look at the actual slabs they have on-hand to see which would go best. As long as you aren't connecting to an existing slab of granite you should be able to find a piece that fits well enough. I'd be hesitant about doing it sight unseen.

  2. I hope I'm not derailing the original question, but my option for local farmer egg "could be fertilized." My question is would I notice when I'm using the eggs? (I'm scared that I'm going to crack open and egg and find like a partial/whole baby chick in there. Sorry it was a thing that I've seen people eat in my childhood and it grossed me out.)

  3. We have custom or semi-custom systems in the US too. You just design them the way you want them. There are lots of choices ranging from being cheap wire racks to companies that also make kitchen cabinets (like Kraftmaid). Even if their picture shows shoes stored with clothes you don't have to arrange yours that way. That's what we have, and I just put my side/section together and my husband decided the things he wanted to have. This article has some examples 8 Best Closet Systems to Organize Your Space 2021 — Best Closet Kits (rd.com)

I have my clothes in the walk-in closet. I put my shoes in a separate closet in plastic shoe boxes (I haven't gotten to put the shoe and purse closet together yet). For patent leather shoes, I put one shoe in a cloth bag and the other out in a plastic shoe box. For purse I put them in cloth bags and line them up on a bookshelf in that same closet.

  4. I grew up in a clear property line area. Fencing was placed at property lines, and everything was fenced. (Seriously even the front yard had super clear delineations. To now where I live in a blurry property line area, I absolutely feel for you. My husband has had to bring out the survey map to prove to a neighbor he was building his fence 5 feet into our property. I would suggest even if this issue can be resolved without a survey get one anyways for yourself.

If paint and interior decor is your true passion, could you look at specialized paint or hardware stores? Seems like it might be a better fit. We have a "hardware" store in our city that has an entire warehouse devoted to upscale products for home renos. It also has a typical small-town hardware store.

Actually, this reminds me a store near me that specializes in stone and tile had color/interior design consultants on hand to help customers choose their stone and tile. So, I definitely would expand my search to more specialty stores like furniture, flooring, stone... At that particular store the lady who helped me choose the right colored tile didn't even have to ring me up or anything. The sales associate rang me up, the stone materials expert talked to me about the different materials in countertops and the design consultant lady just helped me with the colors.

Pull out the couch or loveseat away from the wall and make a storage area behind it?

Actually.... that is a good idea.

Each of my kids started life with a canvas sling, front-facing bookshelf in their bedroom. When they were around 5 they upgraded to a cube shelf in their bedroom to hold their plethora of reading books, and the sling bookshelf moved downstairs to hold their school work. That system works well for us - everyone knows who's bookshelf is whose, so any stray materials can be quickly tossed in the right place. They can sort their materials by shelf if they want. And the materials are easily visible so I can tell at a glance if they have left things scattered about. In fact, for my youngest two, I take a picture of the shelf perfectly filled, print it out, and post it right above their shelf so they can self-check if everything is neatly where it is supposed to be.

I don't know if I can manage to get our shelves to that state long enough for me to take the picture... 😜

  7. I would talk to the library about the books I can't get. A lot of libraries partner with other libraries so perhaps they can get those books for you. They may have an ebook program and there might be more books available there (my local library advertised something like it during the height of COVID but I never used it). Lastly if they get enough "demand" for a book they may start stocking the book.

we started with HWT but I don't like that there isn't a top line.

Curious, did you find this to be a problem with your kids? We use HWT too, but we are still at a level where I'm not that concerned with neatness. (I'm concerned that they try and are focused, but I'm also OK when my son adds details like teeth and spines to his letters.)

This thread was about wholly the child tax credit that was widely publicized and discussed here and in mainstream media coverage/publications.

Well on the child credit front, they shouldn't have sent it to as many people as they did. If they knew it was going to be so complicated that they sent multiple letters about it, why do it. Doesn't make a lick of sense why my family got one, because we are nowhere near being qualified for the program. I absolutely feel for the families that are closer to the limit for which the money made a difference for them and are now realizing they have to pay it back.

I know a single Mom who oays far more attention to her IRS mail than you did.

My issue is she shouldn't have to.

I am not livid on my own behalf but on those who are less fortunate. I do hire someone for my taxes, who helps us assess our taxes on a quarterly basis.

The way too complicated taxes have been around for many decades so, I don't blame any particular recent presidents on it.

I can assure you that when my relatives die, the last thing I do is check their withholdings but those aren’t the people cobcjectibv here, dad had zero dependent children.

If someone close to you dies there is a lot of paperwork and things, you have to do in the following days and months. Usually all that falls on the spouse and/or the executor of the estate (I don't know what happens if neither of those exists). I have witnessed more than one spouse having to make phone calls and deal with these logistics through their tears. You are really lucky to not have been in a position to have to make sure all the ducks are in a row during your grief. It is not a choice people get to make, especially in an unexpected death.

There were MULTIPLE letters to filers about the child tax credits.

For the record I was just trying to state that there are instances where the IRS does levy penalties on taxes you didn't pay prior to April 15.

And if you happen to sell the stock below the discount price you do get to claim the loss.

I am not OK with forcing people to take a loss on potential investment just to make their tax bill. Mostly because this affects the middle class way more than it does the rich, because even without loophole that they can employ at the very least they can cover this with cash and hold out until the stocks are profitable again.

There is no penalty (interest) for not paying what you didn't know you owe. There are still three weeks before the filing deadline. Penalties won't accrue until after 4/15.

That's not true. There are certain things that you have to pay estimated taxes for quarterly and will be penalized if you don't. One example would be when you" sell a valuable asset", which includes things like stock. Stocks are a potential area where it can get complicated in terms of a sale or earning is counted against you even when in some cases you did not actually receive an "actual" payout. An easy example is when companies give their employees discounted stocks, that discount counts toward you "making money" even though there was not an actual cash payout.

What tax laws did they pass for this year that will change things up again?  Who knows!

Ugh not to mention some information you don't get from companies until February or even April because that is the official deadline for them to give it to you. My CPA is earning her pay.

  12. I am so glad I asked this question. I think I'll try the tub/milk crate idea where their active books just go in there. I love the look of the library cart but, I think there is too much temptation there for my kids to play with the cart and I'm not sure I have any great place to stow it away where the kids can't get to it. We homeschool in a living room that I turned into a playroom. It's a large room with not a lot of useable wall space, because of walkways and windows. I already put shelving in front of the stupid fireplace that takes up an entire wall.

My way isn't pretty. But it's working, so I need to release that.

Well, I started with a cute basket. That lasted until I got a few teacher's manuals then it was too small, and things overflowed to the rest of the dining table.

I like the crate idea for portability because we do homeschool in several areas. Math happens on the floor, reading/history happens on the couch, science in the kitchen/outside, handwriting is the only thing that happens at the school table.

That's when you'll find those bigger style magazine racks that will hold notebooks. They're like $3, not too bad.

Do you mean these things? https://www.amazon.com/Simple-Houseware-Magazine-Holder-Organizer/dp/B06ZZ3QTST/ref=asc_df_B06ZZ3QTST/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198092106120&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12680224283634845771&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032039&hvtargid=pla-349092365216&psc=1

I had a hard time using the bookshelf because some of the paperback stuff/coil bound stuff kept flopping over.

  14. They are for tea and coffee. I use the saucers a lot to hold tea bags after steeping and also for small desserts or when you just need a small dish. The cups are less used because I like a big mug of tea not some dainty thing. The cups make for really cute dip and snack holders.

  15. I remember when my parents found out some people did that in the US, they were horrified. My mom came from a household where it was normal to hit your kids with a bamboo stick and my dad was an orphan lived on the streets. Forget the taste and discomfort, if you aren't careful about your soap, can't it be toxic. And even if it isn't truly toxic soap will cause irritation in your stomach and intestines if ingested and the fun that can come with that.

  16. That happened to one of my colleagues as well. He bought a house that had a golf course. About 3 years after moving in they decided the golf course thing wasn't profitable enough and decided they wanted to turn the golf course land into condos. I'd be wary that there would always be a chance of that.

If you want the wide-open space; I think it's better to back up onto a national or regional park. Then your issue is wild animals and (if you don't have a clear fence) the hiker or dog walker going into your yard.

  17. I watched the "History of Maths" documentary he showed area, circumference and diameter in terms of marbles in a circular container. Even as an adult I found that fascinating and a great illustration, I think he used 3 and a little bit more. He was demonstrating how ancient people could have had a sense of how to make and measure round things before decimals were invented.

I would say there’s a good chance @Elizabeth86 and @saraha are holding themselves hostage to their husband’s emotions while their husbands are oblivious.  And treating your husband as an abuser who you have to placate when he isn’t one isn’t fair to him.

As an encouragement (but I'm pretty bad with words), if your husband's a good guy these "disagreements" and "arguments" are going to be just fine. In fact, there's a chance they are waiting and wanting those direct conversations. Some people are just not intuitive that way.

I had to get therapy for this. Essentially mine stemmed from my parents not communicating in a healthy manner and having been in an abusive relationship. If your husband is going to be abusive, there is no way for you to be a good enough wife or a placating enough one not to incur his wrath. I'm saying by now you would have experienced his wrath.
