  1. I didn't mind the different mind set or whatever but I found that the pre-school heavy co-op I was in ended up tailored to the pre-schoolers. They need more adult involvement and they take all the volunteers. The classes could only be so long because of attention span and it really short changed the older kids. The frustrating thing was the parents who had established it and worked for it were doing it for their older kids. We did finally say that you had to have a school age child to join but it always did stay over run with younger children. I quit though I had a couple younger children too. The older kids weren't getting as much out of it and they are too busy to waste time.
  2. I left facebook awhile back. Closed my account and was prepared to never use it again. Then I found a local group who only shared via their facebook page and it was worth it to me to start an account. I wasn't going to friend a ton of people, just be part of the small local group. Guess who had saved all my info. Nothing had disappeared. I would have had to put in a fake name to start a new account.
  3. That may be true but what I am saying is that a huge segment of the population is being lulled into a false sense of security and it seems to be purposefully done. They should be angry but they are always told it happened to this black person over here who was illegally selling cigarettes or had this past problem. Notice the most publicized cases even within the black community is always one where they can come up with something to make it the victims fault regardless of how stupid some of us think the "reason" is. Some how it comforts a large group of people out there I think.
  4. Yes, people are always trying to pit different groups against each other. Native Alaskans have historically NOT been treated equally and they have had soooo many unfair things happen to them in regards to the legal system. They have had their homes burned and been relocated to camps during WW2. They had to dress "white" to prove they should be able to vote and just this past year 4 men finally got out of prison that were put away in what seems pretty much a racially motivated trial. Unfair treatment is unfair and there is not point in playing one- upmanship versus fighting it all.
  5. Is the reason white deaths are not publicized because it is easier to keep a majority of the population in control if they are told it is only an issue for some people? I don't know but I do know more whites are killed by cops than blacks yet we never hear about it. Part of this is the white population is larger and therefore by sheer numbers there is bound to be more incidents and I have seen a lot of evidence of cops that seem obviously raciest too but why do you never hear about white people killed by cops when there is so many more of them. I guess it doesn't get the ratings?
  6. He was talking about his department specifically from the time he got in to the time he retired but it does look like a trend. Things don't happen in a vacuum.
  7. I remember listening to a man that was a retired police officer speak of this on NPR. The training is different than when he started. It is more law enforcer rather than peace officer and he said the rise in shootings and aggression was bound to happen. I wish I could remember the name of the show and officer so I could refer people to it. I also realize training and recruiting and corruption are different in different departments.
  8. You don't have to have a weapon to be killed by cops. The Thomas Kelly case made that clear. You can be a completely incapacitated (due to position and being held down) and brutally beaten to death and the police will get away with it. You don't have to be colored though that may statistically make your odds worse. Police kill a lot of people every year. Some are in self defense and trying to stop a bad guy while others are not. As long as people will always give cops the benefit of the doubt we are headed for more trouble because there will be less weeding out of the bad apples. If you are going to have a position of authority you had better be held to a higher standard not lower. That does not seem to be the case. I do not know enough about these cases to say one way or the other.
  9. Putting it in the proper gear according to your wiki article isn't technically engine braking which was what this general thread was about. My bad. The transmission still slows you down in the same manner as a car. Downshifting is not illegal as Pawz4me stated earlier. In fact the link you posted on cabbage hill specifically stated to please use the proper gear. I'm still not sure why you thought I was mad at you because I stated that I drive a diesel and that there are lots of little vehicles with diesel engines, even cars. You liked my next post so I'm confused but just to be clear. I'm not angry. This isn't really something I get passionate about. :)
  10. Mad? I just stated that I have a diesel I tow with and specified that I use engine braking all the time because it's a fact. I'm not mad at you at all. I'm looking at my post and can't figure out why you think I'm mad. I live in Alaska and have driven the Al-Can highway many times. I'm pretty sure I've seen my fair share of steep grades but I also stated I'm not a trucker or expert but honestly I was only responding to the fact that smaller vehicles are often diesel.
  11. The only reason I can see skidding issues with tractor trailers is that when you are hauling a heavy load you want your trailer brakes being applied also. If your load is heavier than you than stopping your vehicle while your trailer keeps going can be exciting. That being said, I'm not an expert on tractor trailers. I do know how to tow with my own diesel though.
  12. I have a diesel Excursion and use engine braking all the time. Many pick ups and SUV's that people use to tow are diesel.
  13. Totally rude to mock. I do love seeing how different parts of the country speak a different language though.
  14. In our family we smoke and grill Salmon but don't bbq it. :001_smile:
  15. It wouldn't have been obvious to me either Sparkly. Whenever I get into a different vehicle, especially newer models of non-Fords I feel like I'm in a foreign land and don't know what to do.
  16. I was just curious because it seems strange to me to have no ability to shift at all. I do think automatics are better or more efficient at shifting than people so I don't typically shift manually except going down a steep grade if I want to save my brakes but still strange. So I looked up the Kia Soul it sounds like there is a + and - sign next to the drive position that allows you to shift. I wouldn't recommend using it just playing around as that can be hard on a transmission but I bet that's how you do it Sparkly.
  17. Are there cars where there is no way to manually downshift? Genuinely curious as I've never seen one but my newest car is 15 years old and they keep coming out with more stuff. Almost always my edits are for homonym issues. :/
  18. Texasmom33- Scary! There are arguments about whether you should downshift all the way to first at high speeds as it destroys your transmission. Honestly, if I were going fast and had any time at all I would shift to third if that is an option and apply parking brake then move to second and then first. If I was about to ram something with no options I would go straight for first. The argument isn't whether you will have to repair transmissions but if you lose the ability to continue to apply engine braking in the current situation which may be your only braking. Supposedly newer cars will work their way down rather than dropping straight to first but I drive old vehicles so don't depend on me but check for more enlightened informants for new vehicles. Parking brakes can help but really aren't meant to stop you but all friction is a friend in a bad situation. Also, pumping brakes may help if brake fluid pressure is the problem. Make sure your cruise control us off! Though touching the brakes should turn it off, who knows if things are going wrong.
  19. Downshifting is better than neutral. The engine acts as a brake. Jumping from a car negates the millions spent in making vehicles safer in case of a collision. You have no protection. It's like throwing away your helmet before you crash.
  20. Especially since few children drive manuals now days they probably know less about down shifting, parking brakes, etc. It also depends on terrain, hills, etc. I learned to drive on a vehicle that needed the brakes fixed, not on a public road btw. I'm confused about the driver thinking the brakes failed. I am not sure I understand the situation. It sounds very strange to me.
  21. I guess I don't get why people care what other people post. The vague booking sounds like it is done by annoying people but for the most part people's passions are what make them who they are. If a runner can't post a run then what are they supposed to post? If a parent can't constantly post kid pictures then how do they share their life with you? I may not be interested in the 1000th baby pic especially since babies don't really do anything but for the friend who waited forever to have a baby well, why wouldn't she? I'm happy for her. My husband posts music a lot but other people who share his music taste probably appreciate it. I may not be preparing for a marathon but if I have a friend who is I'm just going to say, "You go girl!" and cheer her on. Why not? If someone is making a beautiful quilt though I'm not a quilter I'm still happy to see the quilt. That is what they have been doing. I like when people post about their life even the frustrated posts so I can to encourage them. There have been times I posted something is up and people offered to help. I have brought meals to people posting they were sick. It is supposed to be "social" and therefore I want to be able to get to know people more from it. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. I do hate when I have to unfollow someone because they will repost political memes or world photography memes all day long. If I wanted to see every single post from this sight or that sight I would subscribe to them myself. I usually just edit the news feed so the things from the sight they are sharing from don't show up but if they do that all day with a lot of different sights they get cut. Which is frustrating to me because I would want to get the post about their daughter has cancer or something like that.
  22. I agree with you on these points but I'm not sure they have to do with equality. Control issues, gifts with strings attached, lack of respect in allowing adults to run their own lives have more to do with the individual relationship of the parent and child than how it equates to siblings. They could be equally controlling of all the children or only ones they disagree with or who trully can't handle it on their own.
  23. You know inequity doesn't bother me at all. Love doesn't work like that. Corb Lund had a great line in a song, "Sometimes life isn't equal, sometimes equal isn't fair." We are a family and we work together. Heck, sometimes all the kids are pitching in to help each other. I have a little brother 32 whom received a home from my parents. They help him a lot. They built the house on their own property. They provide money for his vacations and go with him. Should I be totally jealous? I think not. My little brother has Down Syndrome. To treat us exacatly equal just wouldn't be right and it wouldn't benefit the whole family. Everyone works to the best of their own ability and loves and helps each other it works better.
