  1. I don't see my posts but I think I'll try to post again and see what happens.
  2. Does his school have a career center/department that helps students look for jobs/internships? DS's school has that department and I remember being told to tell ds that as soon as he is settled in, their department should be the next place that he should visit to get started on or to update a resume.
  3. I get booted out of the forum every time, which means I have to sign in again.
  4. Unless you live in Manhattan, there is just no way out of a commute. You can look at Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island to find apartments that won't cost as much as the ones in Manhattan. If you're used to living in a house, NYC apartments will shock you with their smallness. The pros I can see for living in NY instead of NJ is that there are tons of activities for your kids to join in, and quite a number of them are free to very low cost for NYC residents. Not going to get that in NJ. NYC also has lots more museums, many of which are technically free if you have a thick skin and can ignore the look for not paying the "suggested donation." You might also want to check out the tax situation if you live in another state but work in NY. Will part of the salary be taxed by both states?
  5. Help? Anyone? I left the check on the "Remember me" box when I logged in and was able to get a bit further along the process of posting but I still got booted out when I tried to post my ad.
  6. I'm here in the States, in a very populous state, and I could have written that statement. I wish I could help but sending you :grouphug: anyway.
  7. I've been trying to post ads on the classifieds but it keeps kicking me out and tells me I'm not allowed to post. HELP!
  8. I haven't watched this video yet but it might help. https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/scores/student-score-reports
  9. From what I deduce, unless your child is graduating in 2017 and has a high enough score, your child is not eligible for the NMSC. For example, dd took the PSAT and I think her score is impressive but yet was not selected for NMS, but that is because she is graduating in 2018, not in 2017.
  10. I have two for now. I will have three pretty soon. Sigh....
  11. Do I have to file a separate FAFSA for each child? Or do I just fill out one FAFSA for my two dc? How about the CSS Profile? One per child or one for both? Thanks!
  12. Not in FTC this year but DS was on a team throughout his high school years and every year has added challenges. Last year, they had to totally rebuild their robot mid season due to design issues. I don't even know what the challenge is this year but I'd just like to encourage your team to keep at it. Many times, it's the learning that counts in the end.
  13. The first meeting will be with primary advisor pretty soon. We'll be having a discussion after that. Nothing has to be declared this year but ds talked to us about this last week so at least he's doing his research early.
  14. Just want to hear opinions from the board about this question: If interest level in either choice is the same, would you choose to double major in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering, or major in Mech Eng with a comp sci minor? I think I'm more focused on job prospects between the two choices. Thanks!
  15. Related to the topic so I'll ask here instead of starting a new thread. Did you answer every question in the school profile section for the counselor? So far, I only answered the ones that have an asterisk and was going to skip the rest. DD did take AP classes but I didn't know how to answer the questions about # of AP/honors classes offered and # of AP/honors classes student is allowed to take if I did check the AP and honors boxes.
  16. When we went to visit Cornell last year, the presenter mentioned being able to craft a custom major. If the student has a very strong idea of what she wants to do, she can sit with an adviser and create a customized major. One example he gave was a student who wanted to work for Disney as an imagineer. They were able to put together classes that would be useful for her in her future job, which is where that student works now. So it might be worth asking colleges if that is a possibility even if they don't publicly say they have an integrated program. DD did the summer program at CMU recently so if you have questions, I can ask dd.
  17. Another CA question: Mid-year reports - Is this something that I also need to do when the first semester is over or is this something that I only need to do when asked by prospective colleges?
  18. If you added a reading list to your child's college application, where did you put it? where did it go in the Commom App? So far, only one of dd's target schools specifically ask for her reading list. Maybe I can add it somewhere for the other schools... Thanks!
  19. Okay, now I'm in a tizzy. For the homeschool section asking about the outside courses, I just put the basic info of course name, met how many times, setting, provider. I was going to add something about referring to the more detailed course description for more info. I have a 10-page course description which I was going to upload as a second transcript. DD did take quite a bit of outside classes. I don't think I'll be able to stay within the word-number limit. Should I still copy all that course description info onto the homeschool section outside courses?
  20. Wow! This is a lot of responses! Yes, we found out that it means cash gifts and that this is common within the culture of the birthday girl. I am ambivalent about this. On one hand, it saves us the trouble of having to go shopping for a gift, but on the other hand, the old traditional lady in me sees this as tacky and "I'm paying to be at your party."
  21. DD got invited to a sweet 16 party. This was at the bottom of the invite. Care to guess what this means? I will have dd ask around to find out what this means but I thought I'd try the forums first.
  22. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge!
  23. Yes, the tuition is a killer if full-price. Thank goodness for scholarships! We just went there Saturday to visit him and look around the capital. Definitely will visit the state museum the next time we're there.
  24. I would recommend you still try the RPI one. DS is not a super genius and he's a freshmen there now. I have to admit he does spend a lot more time studying than many of his peers to do well in his classes but I've seen many kids who have done very well and get into programs because they are hard-working.
  25. Thank you! Now I understand the self-reporting question on the Common App.
