  1. Since SATs and APs are through College Board, when I order a score report to be sent to colleges, will the report contain both SATs and AP scores? I went through the ordering process and my impression is that I would have to pay for SAT scores to be sent and then pay again for AP scores to be sent. Or am I doing something wrong? (ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching keeps going off in my head.) You would think I would remember all this since ds just went through applying for college last year, but having his really good guidance counselor at his school work with him, many of these things I only heard him mention to me but I didn't have to do a lot.
  2. Just to share something positive. Here is a reply from a NY school when I inquired last week about homeschool transcript and diploma: "The official document from her home-school should suffice." Short and to the point.
  3. Follow-up question that sounds silly: How did you sign your transcript? Did you print it first, sign, then scan it to use for submission?
  4. I feel comfortable giving dd grades for her core subjects (English, math, science, social studies, Latin) but for Phys Ed, Health, and other electives, I am planning on just putting down "Pass." This includes learning Java Script, HTML, CSS on her own using Head Start books. Since I honestly can't give her a grade for these, I was only going to put "pass" since she did finish the books and DH required her to do a final project to show that she did learn the stuff. My main question is how to explain it in my school profile? Has anyone ever done this? How did you explain your system if you used P/F? Thank you!
  5. DD is targeting private schools. I think one of the schools would have been okay with our home transcript and diploma were it not for the state homeschooling FAQ page. That's why I went to HSLDA for help. I hope to hear back from them next week. It does vary between schools. One of her target schools is a private school in NY and they will accept my homeschool transcript and diploma.
  6. I am having the same problem since dd is targeting a number of NY schools. Iv'e had discussions with them and I've finally asked HSLDA to help me respond back to convince the schools that a GED is not needed. My state's homeschooling laws sound like NH's, but the problem is our state has a homeschooling FAQ page on their website which makes it sound like homeschoolers need to take the GED, or that we can get a diploma through a state homeschool organization (which is really stupid for them to even put that on the website as our state does not recognize any official homeschool org!) It has been a discouraging week for me due to this. I am second-guessing myself about homeschooling dd through high school, that I'm going to lessen her chances of getting into some of her desired schools (ranging from safeties to select.)
  7. Update: I did respond back with my explanation of our state not having any approved organizations, and why dd cannot take the GED (I would have to certify that she is not is school for her to be able to take the GED. She is definitely "in" school!) The person is the state rep for the school. She responded very nicely and said she forwarded my response to the proper person in admissions. We'll see what happens. Thank you to all who responded. I enjoyed reading the different arguments presented.
  8. A school I contacted about homeschooler requirements came back with this answer: Homeschooled students who apply to********** must provide a transcript from a third party homeschool organization that is recognized by their state. (There are many homeschool companies that provide curriculum and assessments.) If this is not possible, the student should take the GED (General Educational Development) exam and report his/her score as part of the ********** application, in lieu of a third party transcript. I live in a lenient homeschooling state where the BOE does not have anything to do with homeschoolers. We do not have a recognized third-party homeschool org. I do not want DD to take the GED. So far, the response I've thought up was to explain about the non-existence of a recognized organization by our state. I will also mention dd having taken cc classes, AP exams, and is taking three AP classes in her senior year. Anyone have any other suggestions on how I should tackle this. (Just came back from visiting my dying brother in another country so I still can't think clearly.) Thank you!
  9. Classes dd took at the local cc will be included in the transcript I am making for her. Do I submit a separate transcript from the cc on the Common App or do I ask the cc to send it directly to the colleges where dd is applying?
  10. I set up a dummy account and will go through the actual steps myself and take notes. I'm busy preparing for a trip out of the country to visit my very ailing brother so common app is on hold until I come back. But from what I've clicked through, "Other Recommenders" do not have to fill out as much stuff as a Teacher recommender. The plan is to have dd include detailed instructions for the person/s that she will ask for LORs.
  11. So I should check "2" when I'm asked how many transcripts I'll submit, right?
  12. DS who just graduated from a B&M school did have a number of presentations using power point and Prezi. He did have to make a group movie once but one guy in the group loved that stuff and he did all the tech work. With Common Core, there are more group presentations expected from the students. I would suggest playing around with Prezi as it is a very fun tool. Maybe have the kids do their next presentation using Prezi. One year, I did receive a Christmas greeting with a link to a Prezi presentation that one of the family's children made as their annual Christmas newsletter. I thought it was the best "newsletter" that year.
  13. I asked this question in another thread but I though it would be less confusing for me to start a separate thread. Thanks for reading this again. I have written up a school profile which I am planning to upload onto the counselor section. I started filling out the student portion and in the last tab called "Homeschool," it has these questions which is answered in my school profile. Please provide any information about the applicant's homeschool experience and environment that you believe would be helpful to the reader (e.g. educational philosophy, motivation for homeschooling, instruction setting, etc.). Please explain the grading scale or other methods of evaluation. My question then is should I re-write my school profile or should I just use the same information in both sections? Another question I have is course descriptions. I have the course descriptions for all of dd's high school classes. In the student part of the counselor section it asks about outside courses: If the student has taken courses from a distance learning program, traditional secondary school, or institution of higher education, please list the course title and content, sponsoring institution, instruction setting and schedule, and frequency of interactions with instructors and fellow students (once per day, week, etc.). In addition, if the student has taken any standardized testing other than those listed on page 2 of the Common Application, please also describe below. I can easily enter the data that I have but I'd still like to submit the whole document that lists and describes all her classes as one college she is targeting wants to see that information. Maybe I'm missing it but I don't see another area where I can upload supplemental documents other than the school profile and transcripts. Thank you and a warning that I'm sure to have more questions to ask as I go along! :)
  14. I created a school profile where I wrote out the philosophy of our homeschool. I was going to upload that document on the "school profile" of the counselor profile section. Now I see that under the student section, there is space to write about our homeschool philosophy, etc. My answers to those questions would be similar to the school profile document I had created. Should I redo my school profile or should I just repeat myself in the student section?
  15. When we type in the homeschool CEEB code 970000, these choices show up: "Homeschool Clearinghouse" "I was/am homeschooled" "I don't see my homeschool on this list." Which one did you pick? Thanks!
  16. OK. I've been trying to find this page and haven't had any luck with my searches. Can you give me the ink, Regentrude? Thank you!
  17. Piggybacking onto this topic (hope you don't mind, AngieW in Texas) as I am stumped with question: "Do you complete applicants' academic ratings on the Common Application School Report?" I'm not sure what this question is asking.
  18. Not sure if this was covered when you mentioned HIPPA forms but ds had to inform our health insurance about allowing us access to his health records.
  19. Thanks, everyone. I'll have ds find out if the dorm already has a vacuum he can borrow. DS is a very neat person so he'll be on top of making sure his stuff is neat, maybe not as clean as it is at home, but he won't be one to have stuff scattered all over. I just came back from visiting dd1 at her summer program at a college. Her roommate has stuff all over the place; clothes and towel on the floor. DD says as long as roomie keeps the mess on her side of the room, it doesn't bother her. She then said the room across the hall looks like a tornado went through it.
  20. DS went to his overnight orientation this week and asked me to buy him a small vacuum for cleaning his room. The floors are covered with commercial carpeting. My only experience with handheld vacuums was the Dustbuster when it first came out. Didn't like it and never bought another handheld vacuum. I'd appreciate any recommendations for small vacuum that won't take up too much space. Thanks!
  21. Can y'all who've sent children to college help me with this question I've been pondering for quite while? I will be making an official transcript with all of dd's grades on one sheet. She took classes from the CC, PA Homeschoolers, and various online classes (WTM Academy, Derek Owens are two examples.) Has anyone have any college ask the applicant to send grades directly to them from ALL the different educational providers? Or do they only ask for grades to be sent directly to them from the CC? Thanks!
  22. http://blog.commonapp.org/2015/03/31/2015-2016-essay-prompts/ I don't think anyone posted this yet. Time for the next round of college applications in our house.
  23. Yep, I checked before 8 this morning and the results were available. DS did very well on two exams. DD did okay on one exam.
