  1. So I heard from the court. Now they want her to come over spring break. I told them that we already know that she can't serve that Friday since that is the day she will be heading back to school. I asked the clerk about the fact that online they say you can defer up to 6 months so why can't dd defer until summer. That way she won't have to worry about class or the trial lasting more than a week. She said that if they defer college students they like to schedule them during their next available break. I'm not sure why the rules are different for college students. Now they want dd to email them telling them why she wouldn't be available that Friday over spring break. She didn't say whether or not they would honor the request. I'm curious how jury duty is done in other states. Are you usually given a period of time that you have to be a available and they pick from that or do they just assign you a random date? You would think it would be better for people to pick a time period they would be available like a certain month or two and the court can assign you from there. Also do they give you much notice? It seems like it would be a problem if people already had vacation plans set during that time since they are often made more than a month in advance. As it is, we were in the beginning stages of planning a trip over her spring break but now will probably have to shelf it.
  2. Thanks for the heads up. I have actually thought of mono but all 5 of us have been sick. I had mono as a teen so I'm not sure if I could get it again. Ds had a sudden fever a week ago Sunday night and sore throat but his fever only lasted a few days. He still has a sore throat though. He missed school for two days last week but goes to public school and is a senior and has finals this week so he didn't want to miss school. He is also in track and didn't want to miss that but is exhausted afterward. It seems strange that his sore throat is lasting this long. He has no other symptoms. My daughter's worst symptom is her sore throat and laryngitis. She also has a cough though no runny nose etc. it's not acting like a cold or flu. With those the sore throat usually gets better after a few days. She has had it a week. Maybe it's time for her to go back to the doctor as get checked for mono just in case. Strep was negative.
  3. Wow that's awful. I understand civic duty but that's a long time to be away from kids. I also can't imagine if my dd had to miss that much school. Even if they didn't dock her points off, getting notes from classmates or possibly even a power point isn't the same as a lecture. Many of her classes have daily quizzes too or other things that require participation. Also it would be quite difficult to miss that much lab. I guess she would have to talk to her school.
  4. She wouldn't have been able to go in today but that's a good idea about the 19th. She is still pretty sick, fever, sore throat, cough as well as she laryngitis and I'm not exaggerating that she literally has no voice. It's the worst laryngitis I've ever seen. I suppose she could have handed them a note but it's hard for her to communicate. Also because this is federal court it means an hour or so commute on the train to a large city. Then of course getting to and from the train and to and from the court building. It would be easier if this was the county court just 20 min away. Unfortunately this isn't just a cold. My whole family has it. My sons temp even went up to 104!
  5. It's different with school. She can't make up a lecture and they also take points off for missing. Also she is living 4 hours away at school so I think that's different then expecting to go when you are living at home. I think college students should be allowed to do it over the summer. Also I think If they say they allow a deferment up to 6 months then it should be allowed for college students too.
  6. I posted a few weeks ago about my daughter getting summoned for jury duty. She is a college student and she would be back in class 4 hours away during the week they wanted her. She tried to postpone in the website form but it wouldn't let her postpone further out than 3 months so she called in. They made her change her date to today. Last week my whole family got quite sick and we are still sick. Actually my dh is going on 3 weeks. My daughter has laryngitis and literally has no voice. She went to the doctor Thursday and got a doctor's note. I called the court and explained the situation since they would not have been able to understand her. They said to fax over the doctor's note and they would get back to her since at that point there was no way of knowing if she would still be sick this week. They excused her for Monday (today) and said they would call her. They never called so we checked the automated system Sunday night just to make sure they didn't have her reporting today. They changed her report day to the 19th but never checked with her if it would work out. She is going back to school next Friday (the 22nd) so it won't work out. Dd still has no voice so I have a call in and I'm waiting for a call back. When I talked to the clerk on Thursday she said they try to get students in over break. Now we are afraid that they will expect her to report over spring break but again she will be heading back to school that Friday so she would not be available for a whole week. Since this is a federal court they say that the trials can last a week or more but usually not more than a few days. Can they make her stay all week and not return to school on Friday like planned? Next Friday she needs to go back to get books. At their school everyone rents them so it's not something she could have done ahead of time. Since class starts Monday she needs to do this on Friday. Over spring break she needs to go back that Friday since that is when we are available to take her back. My husband is going out of town the following day. Due to health problems I can't drive that long. My daughter does not have her own car and there isn't a bus that would work out. Even though the e Jury form told her she couldn't postpone more than 3 months, on their actual website they say you can postpone 6 months, which would be great since dd would be home for the summer then. Can we hold them to that? The lady on the phone isn't very accommodating. Again, I know normally my daughter should handle this but she has no voice. She has to type things out for me to understand her.
  7. Well she called and all they did was change the dates. She politely asked if she could do it over summer break but they insisted she do it over this break. So now she has to go in on the 11th. It wouldn't be a big deal if it was local or for just a few days. It is "at minimum" a week. It is in a big city (we are in a suburb) so she will have to take the train down (at least an hour ride) and then either a bus or taxi. I just wish they would wait for summer. This is the same daughter who just got over being very sick for 10 days. She also has severe clinical insomnia so she really needs this break to recover. I realize she still has a few weeks before she has to go but I still feel bad for her. Again, I realize it is her civic duty but it would be nice if she had more notice. I never realized they gave you such a short notice in general. She also had plans for that week including helping me drive her older sister back to college as well as some physical therapy appointments that she will have to cancel. I don't think anyone should be given such short notice and have to cancel plans. It's fine if they wanted her to do it over summer break.
  8. And I used to work in the call center that handled those calls. Actually it's where I met my dh since we both worked there in college.
  9. Actually she was called previously for the county and it was no problem but this is for federal and it seems more complicated.
  10. Does anyone have any experience with their college student being summoned for jury duty? My 20 year old daughter got the summons yesterday. It is for federal court and her date is in a month. She will have to serve at a minimum of one week. The problem is she is 4 hours away at school. She will call tomorrow and ask for them to postpone it. She was originally trying to do it electronically and it says that you can only postpone a maximum of 90 days. Even if she served over spring break (which of course would stink if she actually had to go in every day) but the biggest problem is if she actual ended up in a trial since it could last more than a week. I was just wondering if anyone had experience with this. Again, she is calling tomorrow but in the meantime we are pretty worried. It's not like an employer who has to give her time off. It would not be good for her to miss a week minimum of classes.
  11. Sorry I didn't update sooner. It's been a crazy week. She is finally home! She insisted she was ok and didn't need us to come earlier. I've been a bit worried since she has such a high pain tolerance. She has been playing hockey on a swollen ankle for several weeks. (Not necessarily the best decision but it's the way she is) Her fever went away yesterday and the pain lessened, although today was her first regular meal in over 10 days. She is been living on toast and even that has been hard for her to eat. She had plain noodles last night and ate a regular breakfast and lunch today. Thank goodness! Of course I will still keep a close eye on her but at least she is home so if the pain returns I will take her to the doctor immediately. Anyway thank you for the feedback. I swear sometimes I find it more difficult being a parent of young adults. I guess they will always be our babies.
  12. She has had a fever since Tuesday. The highest was 102 but this afternoon it's only 99.5. It was up again a bit last night.
  13. Chris, could that cause a fever or diarrhea?
  14. My college dd has been sick for a week. She had severe pain last weekend in the right lower abdomen. She even thought for awhile that it could be her appendix. The pain went away but she didn't have much of an appetite all last weekend. Monday night the pain came back but she said by then it was more of a diffuse pain. She ended up with a fever, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea by Tuesday morning. She had a weird pressure type feeling by Thursday so she got a ride to urgent care. The doctor immediately told her it was the stomach flu. He gave her something for the nausea. After the doctor left she asked the nurse if it could possibly be appendicitis and she pretty much cut her off and dismissed it. I have a history of atypical appendicitis that I had when I was 18. The pain wasn't in the right place. So it leaves us a bit concerned. The doctor told her that the stomach flu doesn't always just last 24 hours and can last up to 72 hours. By then it had been well over 72 hours so the doctor was a bit confusing. She is still sick but the fever is down to mostly around 100. She doesn't vomit a high volume or very often (once or twice a day) but hasn't been eating. She has waves of nausea that come and go. She hasn't had a full meal since last Friday and it was only and a sandwich. She has mainly survived on toast and even that makes her a bit nauseated. She is trying to stay hydrated. She ran out of Gatorade a few days ago but has been able to sip on a little Coke and has been drinking water. Unfortunately she doesn't have a car and we are 4 hours away. Most of the campus finished finals on Friday including all of her roommates and teammates and doesn't have any other friends. She is stuck there until her last final on Tuesday. My husband is going to pick her up on Tuesday. He offered to go there earlier but she says she is ok. Could stomach flu really take this long to get over? I feel bad since she can't really eat anything and doesn't really have anything like rice or bananas in her apartment. She is barely making it to finals so she isn't up to walking all the way across campus to the cafeteria and probably wouldn't find anything there she is up to eating anyway and the smells would bother her. Btw she knows she is definitely not pregnant.
  15. Any brand recommendations for the headphones?
  16. I'm running out of time and need to think of a gift for my son. I will probably have to get it through Amazon. This year he couldn't come up with any ideas. I got him a few smaller items but I need a bigger item. He already has a phone, video game systems, laptop. My mil also gave me money for him so I need something in the 100 or so range. My dh refuses to help me and this is really stressing me out. I have a chronic illness and I'm in a pain flare. I want to be happy about giving him a gift but at this point I just need ideas.
  17. There is a chart in the room with suggested tips.
  18. That is part of my 20 year old daughter's problem. She also wakes up several times even once she falls asleep. Unfortunately we have tried everything including moving her wake time forward every day, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day and even a form of sleep deprivation. The doctor had her stay up pretty much all night. I think it was 5 am and then the next day she could go to sleep 1/2 hour earlier. Unfortunate none of this worked. I'm sorry. I know it is miserable. She is in college now and luckily doesn't have super early classes but she plays hockey and when she has early games and has to be at the rink by 6:30 am she literally only gets 2-3 hours of sleep.
  19. What I hate about massages is that I already pay a fee each month which allows one massage per month. The membership rate is about 30 dollars lower than the regular rate and they expect you to tip on the regular rate. I've had a lot of medical problems which is why I signed up in the first place but I wasn't able to go for quite awhile. They kept on accumulating so now I have about 20 massages in my account. I get a new one added each month so at this rate I will never catch up. Right now I'm trying to go more often and even paying 10-15 per massage for tip is bad enough but if I am going often I just can't afford it. I would love to go twice a week so I canl catch up but then that's a minimum of $20-30 a week and they expect more.
  20. Yes the email was even more "interesting". This guy seems to be friends with the chancellor of the university so I doubt he will be going anywhere anytime soon. Of course my daughter would never base her decision to leave on one small event but it just adds a bit to her dislike of the atmosphere of the school. It's just not the best fit for her. Unfortunately due to other circumstances she made a pretty quick decision picking this school. She will most likely stay there for the year but might consider transferring next year. One thing I've learned . I am not good at getting to the point. Others stated things much better than I did. Of course the link helped. Also I probably should have waited to post until after my fever broke. I've been sick all week and my brain doesn't seem to be functioning that well. Oh and yes I originally thought it was sent out to the whole school but after reading a few more articles (there are several) it was just the one dorm. Still creepy but not quite the same thing.
  21. No this wasn't advertising for the seminar. I didn't word my original post well. That was just kind of a side note. This was a separate email that for some reason the hall director/member of college administration (not a student RA) sent out. I read a copy of the email and in my opinion it was pretty graphic. It even showed diagrams.
  22. We love our Toyota Rav but I'm not sure if it's considered small. I love the backup camera and the warning beep if someone is behind us. It also has a light that shows up on the side mirror if someone is in your blindspot. It is also great in snow. One time my daughter and I were out of town and had to drive to her hockey tournament during a snowstorm. There was at least 6 inches of snow and they hadn't plowed. After the tournament we had to drive home and a good part of the freeway was not plowed. We had no problems. I know if we had been in our civic or even our van we would have been stuck. There is plenty of room but it is so much easier to park than our van.
  23. No you are not mean. At 18 she is capable of getting it herself or using the other shampoo. It's not like it is food and she doesn't have anything to eat. My kids will occasionally forget to ask me to get something they "need" at the store. They either go get it themselves or have to wait until I go to the store next time.
  24. Yes exactly. That's what my husband said. At work they are all adults but no way that email would be acceptable at work.
