  1. "I love Lively Latin! It is sooooo cool!" -my dd 11 (5th grade) I have no experience with Latin and am working through it with a 3rd grader and 5th grader and it is very self explanatory. We are all enjoying...it is kinda a challenge for my ds 3rd grade, just the writing part, though. We like it...you may get differing opinions.
  2. Thanks..I'll try and see what happens. It'd be real sad if they didn't...that's a lot of paper!
  3. Might be a silly question...I'm not a subscriber to any magazines, but have collected some for a project and now I'm wondering if I can just put them in the recycle bin?
  4. Apologia's Exploring Creation series... A big hit for me and the kids. I am FAR from confident with anything science and this is the first text that I feel remotely comfortable with. We also use the lapbook resource to reinforce what we're learning. Very Christian perspective! Our history favorite is Story of the World. Even though it sometimes seems to slant more to a secular viewpoint, I just use it as an opportunity to solidify our Christian beliefs.
  5. I realized (after reading your previous post) that I must be referring to the "answer key." I, at first, thought how strange to not have some kind of guide, but I figured the answer key was all I really needed...and it seems to be working out fine for us, so far.
  6. I just received my Pizza Hut "BookIt" packet today in the mail. You might consider doing something like this with him. You set the goal and he earns a free personal pan pizza each month. Another good incentive site is www.bookadventure.org with comprehension quizzes and prizes.
  7. After much deliberation, I finally decided to go w/LL and I'm so glad we did. We are enjoying it very much. At first, I didn't think about printing out the teacher's guide...but, when that revelation finally hit...wow, I'm glad I did! Not that the material was difficult, but it just gives me a little heads up of what's supposed to be going on. We also love the history and art excerpts that are included. The author suggests only spending about 20 minutes a day on the subject and that has freed up any pressure of finishing a certain amount of pages per day. **However, I'd say this text is definitely for 3rd grade and above. My son is 3rd grade and while he gets it, the writing involved seems like a lot for him (and maybe it's just him). My 5th grade dd doesn't have any problems and even begs to do more.
  8. That is really cool. I'm adding it to my favorites!
  9. We printed out lessons 1-5 and completed them this week. I'll print 6-10 and take it slow...hoping we don't end up with a big gap between lesson 10 and 11. ugh! :001_huh:
  10. On the anniversary of my dad's passing, my husband went to work and I don't think he even remembered. Even though, I was fine, it just would have been nice to get an extra hug or something. Seems like their timing is "off" more than "on". But, it's the "on" times that make up for the "off". So it's all good. :grouphug:
  11. LOL...I made this suggestion to my husband just a few days ago. I asked him if it didn't cost too much, would he be willing. I didn't get a real clear response, I guess he was laughing too hard. I have 3 children...my youngest is 5. I attribute my desire to seeing my baby grow up. I've had a baby or a toddler in my house for the past 11 years...I guess it's natural to long for that stage again. I don't see my husband going for it. I have made the suggestion for a few years that we should consider adoption. But, for me, adopting an infant would not be my first choice. I'd rather have another kid, just to mix in with the rest of them. For now, I snuggle, play and squeeze them as hard and as much as I can because it all passes by so fast.

anxiously waiting for it! I'm not worried about the delay because it seems like I rarely actually finish most texts before we break for summer. I love FLL format, so I don't plan on purchasing something else. just waiting, here...:)
  13. I so agree with you! I sometimes get angry with people who have a hard time recognizing their own sin. "unforgiveness" is definitely not what God wants from us...and it hinders God's best in our lives. While your friends may think all is good, the deceiver is a liar. Unforgiveness can cause serious consequences. The scripture that you were referring to 1 Cor 11: 27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. Recognizing the Lord's sacrifice includes recognizing the grace you've been afforded. Recognizing His forgiveness for us, therefore we must forgive others...it's a decision we make to forgive, even if we don't agree. It's a decision to let go of it, to give it to Him and no longer carry the burden of anger and hurt that the offense has caused. Try looking at forgiveness through the eyes of the Father... He paid the price for everything we will ever need...the cadillac is free for the taking and we want to stay put in the horse and buggy. silly analogy -but, the best that came to mind. As Christians we should be walking in love, especially with our brothers/sisters in Christ, otherwise, what do we offer? My suggestion is pray...let the Holy Ghost do the convicting, not you. He'll be so much more effective. If you do approach, which you probably will, I pray that you be filled with Holy Ghost unction to know all things and speak the Word that pierces and divides. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. I think that as a Christian your anger is right..in fact, I think Christians should keep one another in check more often than what we're doing. At the risk of losing friendships, we should be more focused on wanting to see one another staying on a Godly path. Sorry, it got kinda long...
  14. hi Alana, Looks like you've already gotten a lot of good advice, just wanted to chime in w/what has worked around our house. http://www.liveandlearnpress.com/viewItems.php?category=18 These are pre-made lapbooks designed to go along w/Apologia's Elementary Sciences. They have done the trick with my kids...helping them to retain the information that I read to them. And they have a great notebook to show off what they've learned.
  15. hey Anj, I found this for you, but it costs 1.50 to download. They all look pretty cool, though. http://barefootmeandering.com/homeschool/notebook-covers/#science
  16. We did that project last year and used balloons with very little success. But, we did hang them (many deflated) on the ceiling in the classroom and it helped them all year long remember the order of the planets. Keep it up... they look great!
  17. They work fine now... but, I seem to recall having a hard time with them at the beginning. I think my kids have played with them so much that they've lost some of their strength. We do have some other kind that someone gave us, but they super flimsy and I have difficulty keeping them together.:001_huh:
  18. http://www.ctkmathgamesforkids.com/ - this has logic-type math games that are very challenging http://www.funbrain.com/ - all around fun educational games http://gardenofpraise.com/art.htm - art history http://bookadventure.org/ - comprehension quizzes and fun games
  19. Thank you Siloam... We just started this and I'm very excited about it. I'm headed over there now!
  20. AG was a hit w/my early reader. She's read through every series and even picks them up still to reread. Her first incentive to read through an entire series was the promise of a doll (compliments of Grandpa). Since you mentioned you don't want anything about death, I will warn you that Felicity's grandfather dies in one of the books. But, I didn't find it too intense. In fact, it was helpful, when my dd's own grandfather passed away a couple of years after reading the story.
  21. Ok..I'm only posting because I feel someone needs to speak for those who wake up at a reasonable hour.:glare: 9am - wake up...let the dog out...check emails...start coffee 10am - make sure all the kids are up and moving...getting dressed, bkfast and chores done 11am - start school 1pm - lunch and educational show 1:30pm - back to school depending on the day we'll usually finish up around 4. My dh works a 1pm-1am shift, so somedays we don't begin until he's gone to work. It's the only time the kids get to play w/him. There are some mornings that I'd like to begin earlier, but for the most part I enjoy moving on our timeline. We recently moved to the country and it's nice to not be bound in anyway to neighborhood kids getting home from school.
  22. Oh my .. I would be freezing at 68! mine is set at 78..lol! Of course, we never actually turn the AC off until around mid November when we can open the windows and even then have to turn it back on if people come over. I would think that if you don't need it at night, you could just set it for a higher temp so it won't even kick on. I don't know for sure, but it seems like it'd be better not to turn it on and off so much.
  23. http://www.worksheetworks.com/english/writing/handwriting.html You'd have to type in the alphabet, but it gives you the option of size and layout.
