  1. Have you played any of the following games? What did you think? Any chemistry gems you've found that I don't have listed? Compounded Reaction Elementeo Brain Links Chemical Reactions Periodic Quest
  2. My sister in law actually owns the blueprints book. I need to ask her if I can borrow it and see how dd responds.
  3. I've got a 9th grader who will be starting geometry soon and I'd like ideas for some projects I can do with her. The last couple of years she's had to really work hard to get the math so I want to go the extra mile and try to have some fun with her. She loves arts and crafts and I want for her to enjoy learning math. So far I've thought of quilts and kites. I'm sure I could teach some concepts with sewing, but I don't know enough about sewing to know which concepts to teach with which sewing projects. A circle skirt is obvious. Origami? Anyhow, if you have any links to lesson plans that are in the same vein please post here. Thanks so much!!! Debbie
  4. I am on a homeschool convention planning committee and we're still working on choosing some of the speakers. Would you mind sharing who you most like to hear speak about Charlotte Mason's teaching methods and how to teach science? Thanks so much!!! Debbie
  5. If anyone else would like to hear her speak and can make it to Columbia, SC she'll be at the Midlands Homeschool Convention (July 24th-26th). *eta* http://www.midlandshomeschoolconvention.com/
  6. My husband and I were joking about the term "Classical Unschooling" (a balance that I'm trying to find between teaching children based on the idea of the trivium and making sure I don't fall into the trap of having to check everything off the list in order for us to really have done a school day) so I googled it. Lo and behold, there are others using the term as well. Anyone else on the board a classical unschooler or aiming to be one?
  7. Has anyone heard her speak before? If so, what did you think? Are there any others you've heard speak about math and enjoyed?
  8. Oooooooo, I have rush hour, but I've never seen lazer maze.
  9. I'm thinking about just getting a variety of different puzzle type books and seeing how that goes. Right now that list includes Math Perplexors, Venn Perplexors, Pentomino Puzzles: 365 Teasers to Keep Your Brain in Shape, and some kind of matchstick puzzles (if anyone knows of a good one please pass that along). Can you think of any other kind of puzzles to add to the list? Oh, I also own Mighty Mind Mighty-Mind/dp/B00000K3XI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384185229&sr=8-1&keywords=mighty+mind
  10. Does anyone know how Competitive Mathematics compares to Challenging Word Problems?
  11. I know that I've seen Read With the Best mentioned here a few times, but is anyone actually using the program? If so, what do you think? Thanks ; )
  12. We've got one coming to the South Carolina Midlands with a focus on back to basics of education from July 24th to the 26th. I'll post more info as soon as it's available. *ETA* http://www.midlandshomeschoolconvention.com/
  13. I look forward to the coming links. I'd also be interested in knowing which soroban would be a good quality one.
  14. How funny, I was just contemplating teaching the kiddos to use a soroban. This is very helpful!
  15. You wouldn't happen to be willing to share that beast, would you? I'm anal that way too, but not enough hours in the day to be an overplanner. :biggrinjester:
  16. For those of you who went on to do level 6 before continuing on to AoPS, which concepts from level 6 do you feel were most necessary to have down before moving on to pre algebra? I know that one person mentioned exponents, anyone else? Thanks.
  17. I love the looks of beast academy, but cannot justify the cost. Someone convince me it's worth it. Thanks ; )
  18. Would you mind sharing what you decided? I'm trying to figure out the same thing. Thanks! Debbie
  19. We use MM with Challenging Word Problems as a supplement. MM does have the instruction in the workbooks, but you may still need to go over the information alongside your kids. Regardless, I DO like not having to flip between a TM and a SW. Also, Maria Miller of Math Mammoth is very good about responding to e mails if you ever have any questions. HTH, Debbie
