Pre calculus necessary? Help finding a calc text.
dovrar replied to dovrar's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I am happy for DD to take Pre-calc if that's what needs to be done next. I just wasn't sure if there was one text that would cover both. Thanks for the links.- 16 replies

Thanks. I actually do have a younger child interested in learning calc. because the older one will be. He doesn't know what it is, but he doesn't want to be left behind. ; )- 16 replies

Pre calculus necessary? Help finding a calc text.

Foerster has a solid calculus text as well so if you went with Foerster you could move directly to his calculus. Move directly to Foerster's calculus after Foerster pre-calc?- 16 replies

I also have Math Mammoth 1-6, would this overlap @ all with BCM? Right now we're living with in laws and I'm trying to keep books to a minimum. Oh, and I own AOPS pre-algebra as well, but I think I may hold on to that one.- 16 replies

Pre calculus necessary? Help finding a calc text.

Got it! So, DD has done geometry and used Lials for pre-algebra through Algebra 2. We used Lials BCM for pre-algebra (I don't think that at the time Jann in TX had the pre-algebra 2 class...correct me if I am wrong), Introductory Algebra and Intermediate Algebra., what would you suggest as the next step towards calc? What calc text do you like? Also, I have since then purchased Jacobs Elementary Algebra and Foerster's Algebra I for two of my other kids. I was thinking about getting rid of the Lials basic college math and introductory algebra, should I do that or will there not be overlap between the Lials and the other books. Thanks so much for the help!- 16 replies

I just recently purchase a copy of Jacobs elementary algebra for DD13 because I had read that because it is so incremental it eliminates the need for a pre algebra program. My oldest DD has not until just this past year ever talked of learning calculus, but after reading on coolmath.com she thinks it looks like fun. So, is there a calculus book that moves incrementally enough that I wouldn't need to purchase a pre calc book? Thanks for your suggestions! :bigear:

Thanks Sonya, I have actually gone to the arithmophobia no more website and enjoyed it. Glad to know that there is a FB group, but I don't really do FB because I know that I'll get sucked into it. I mostly hijack my DH acct. when I need to look someone up. ; ) I'm really trying to figure out where the best place to spend my $ is. I've already got the MUS blocks and MM books #1-6 (the old blue series) that I was hoping I could use alongside of CRHOM (which I just subscribed to) for my 10 yo. and 4 yo. I've got one kid in pre-algebra, one in algebra, and one that is in her senior year and FINALLY thinks that math might be fun. She'd been using the Cool Math website to teach herself the concepts in her Algebra 2 book and said, "calculus looks like fun". I never even got through pre calc...had a terrible teacher and opted to take trig and some statistics. So far I've purchased the CR annual subscription, a Jacobs Elementary set (no DVDs) for the prealgebra child, and Foerster's Algebra I Text for DS who is in Algebra I and doesn't like learning math unless he knows where he would be able to apply it. The 10 yo. wants to learn algebra, calculus and trig. and seeing as I'm homeschooling 5 kids it would really be nice to have some sort of resource book for myself to be able to pull problems out of so that I can show how to work the problems with the blocks. Does that make sense at all? Again, I'm a bit restricted by funds and don't know if I really NEED the basic ops kit from CR or not. Or if I need the mortensen books. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks SO much! Debbie

So, how did you teach DS to write a paper? My DS loves to discuss topics to no end but really has trouble with getting it on paper. He's in 9th this year. DH is trying to talk through a paper with him now, but any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Debbie -
If anyone is using Crewton Ramone's House of Math website for high school could you please let me know if I need to purchase a textbook of some sort or are there plenty of practice problems online to practice the methodology with? I think that the website covers trig and pre calc. if not all the way through calc. please correct me if I am wrong. Oh, and does he tend to have a sale at any particular time of year? Thanks!!! Jacobs Elementary Algebra or Foerster Algebra 1?
dovrar replied to dovrar's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Sue in St. Pete, Did you find that you really needed the teacher's manual or could you have done without it? Thanks so much for the detailed answer! ; ) -
Hello All, Years ago I found a book that I thought BJU had suggested using as a supplement to their biology program and now I cannot find it anywhere. Ugh! Anyhow, it's a drawing book and the intention is to reinforce what the student has learned in the readings. I guess maybe it came out before so many of the science coloring books were available. If anyone has a clue as to what I'm talking about I would really appreciate the title. Thanks! Debbie

I've got a high schooler who enjoys math as long as he can see the real life application. Can anyone suggest a curriculum/workbook series for me? If not, another approach that I can be sure I'm covering all of the necessities with. Thanks! Debbie

How did this end up working out for you? I was thinking about combining MM and Mortensen as well. Which Montessori materials did you end up using? I'm looking for a way to use Mortensen/Montessori but keep it fairly inexpensive and simple. We've got a big family and finding places to store things can be an issue.

Does anyone know of a textbook that teaches math like coolmath.com? My daughter loves the website, but I like having resources in print. I'd love to hear your suggestions. Thanks so much! eta Never mind, I found out that they actually do have a print version available.
