marisolstice
Can you suggest some poets? I'm using Ambleside's poetry selections, but they appear to be all American or English poets, at least for years 1-6, and I'd love to branch out. But I am so ignorant of poetry! Do you have any favorites for ages 6-12?
Rosie_0801
I rather like Henry Lawson's poetry and Dorothea Mackellar's 'My Country.' They're both Australian. One of my favourite funny poems is 'Pardon my Garden.' I don't know where the author of that is from.
basketcase
Vikram Seth! He's a current poet, writes with rhythm and meter (which is great for kids to analyze), and he's Indian. Beautiful work - we have a children's collection. And if you haven't read his novel, A Suitable Boy, all 1000+ pages are worth it. ETA: Beastly Tales from Here to There is the book of poems we have. Looks like it's out of print right now, but available used.

EndOfOrdinary
The Tao I Ching is quite interesting or quite boring depending on the kid. Much of it could be seen as free verse poetry rather than any form of doctrine. It influenced not only quite a few philosophers, but also Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Zen. It is also one of the world oldest known books. Even if they think the poetry is stupid, it might come in handy later when covering geography or history. We're also enjoying Marilyn Singer's Mirror Mirror and Follow Follow. And next year I'm planning a term of Aussie poets, so that will be fun. DH's grandmother was Australian, and my kids love Waltzing Matilda and Man From Snowy River, so we are off to a good start ;)

Eagle
We love the book Melvis and Elvis by Dennis Lee. He's a Canadian poet who writes lovely silly children's rhymes. The Notapotamus I thought I saw a potamus, Asleep upon a cotamus, But when I reached the spotamus, The potamus was notamus. It must have got monotamous, Just sleeping on that cotamus— So, feeling hot-to-trotamus, It took off like a shotamus! O naughty notapotamus, I liked your style alotamus. In story, song, and thoughtamus You’re gone, but not forgotamus.
