Can I feed my dogs (labs) something that would make them not so appealing to fleas...

You may have to just get the Frontline or some such monthly bug repellent stuff from the vet. I put the repellent on our lab once a month and we have not had a single flea in the three years we ahve had Captain the Marley lookalike.

We live in the country, and they are outdoor dogs....Do you think the repellent would work in our situation? Do you know the name of the repellent? Is it a shampoo, or powder?

Frontline is a liquid that you squirt along the spine of the animal. It is absorbed into the skin, I believe. It continues to kill fleas all month until the next application. I use it on my outdoor dogs and rain etc. doesn't seem to wash it off. I wouldn't shampoo my dog right after using it though - just in case it hadn't been absorbed yet but I might be too cautious on that. I get it in packs of 6 (6 mo. worth) from the vet. They dispense it according to your dog's weight.

There is another popular liquid called Advantage that works much the same way.

We use this, too, and we're in tick country. It works well.

The only thing I would guard against is getting the cheaper product. Sargeant's, maybe? One of our dogs had an allergic reaction to it, and the vet said it was the same medicine but a different base. So we use the more expensive stuff now.
