Dianne-TX
Our instructions say to make a sugar solution and get some hollyhock. Then, in 7-10 days the female butterflies will lay eggs. My question is, should we let them go or keep them and do all that? Not sure which would be best.
Snickerdoodle
We've done this several years in a row and our butterflies never laid eggs. We let them go. The kids prefer that anyways because then every butterfly they see the rest of the season they think of as their own. :)
Impish
Where would you get holly hock? I don't even know what it looks like, lol!
Dianne-TX
that's how I was leaning. I have no idea where to get hollyhock or milkweed. I think monarch's lay eggs on milkweed anyway. I like the idea of letting them go and then they think they see theirs all the time. :) Fun experience!
nukeswife
We just let ours go on Thursday. We've never had them lay eggs. Although instead of sugar water, I just cut up an orange and put it in their house. They seemed to enjoy it. :) My dd got one of them to sit on her hand for about 4 minutes when we released them. The pictures are on my blog. http://www.fawkesacademy.blogspot.com
Granny_Weatherwax
It is too early in the season for either milkweed or hollyhocks. May I suggest going with fruit for a couple of days and then releasing them? A butterfly release is always a wonderful treat.
Johanna
We have done butterflies many times, and we just slice an orange and put it in the cage (less messy than sugar water especially whey they are carrying around the cage)....we hold them and play with them for a few days..then I try and convince the kiddies to let them go. :-)
