Greta
Could anyone suggest some good living books for Chemistry? My dd is in 9, but suggestions for older kids are probably fine for her too. Thanks!
patchfire
Dd thought that The Periodic Table: Elements With Style was hysterical and loved it. I've had a moderately difficult time finding living books for chemistry. Most of them are written either well below her reading & understanding level, or are closer to high school/adult level. Wee Pip
Another plug for Periodic Table, Elements With Style! My kids were enamored with the element characters. There is also a free lapbook: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/periodic_table.php They recommend a book called Fizz, Bubble, and Flash. I've never read this book but have it on order thru inter-library loan.
Kfamily
Yesterday's Classics has a new book under the Nature category called The Wonder Book of Chemistry. http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com
dragons in the flower bed
Our favorites have been: Chemical Chaos by Nick Arnold The Mystery of the Periodic Table by Benjamin Wiker Marie Curie by Kathleen Krull
Greta
Thank you all so much for the suggestions! I wasn't able to find anything at our local library, but they do have two of these titles at other locations, so I am able to request them. Might have to buy a couple more from amazon or something. Thanks for the help.
Greta
There is also a free lapbook: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/periodic_table.php This looks great! My dd loves lapbooks. And I love free. :D And that book is one that I can get from the library, too. Thanks!
Laura W.
These are the books I'm using with my 6th grade dd next year. Mystery of the Periodic Table Exploring the World of Chemistry by John Tiner Robert Boyle by John Tiner I like the Marie Curie biography suggestion. I'd thought about saving that for when we study physics, but it'll work very well when studying radioactive elements. Blessings, Laura
Matryoshka
My kids just read the Mystery of the Periodic Table, and I'm thinking of throwing Uncle Tungsten, Memories of a Chemical Boyhood by Oliver Sacks at them, but can't give a review on that one yet. melissel
Maybe something here will help you? http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/sciencebooks.htm I can't recommend anything of them personally, but maybe it can give you a jumping off point. Also, sometimes, when I'm looking for books in a similar vein, I plug in some titles I know I like at Amazon and then see what else comes up with it. Hope you find what you're looking for!
