Made in USA but still a store you may want to avoid

Recommended Posts

So, in the news here over the past couple days is a gross story about an American Apparel store in West Vancouver.

(AA operates the largest clothing factory in the USA & has stores around the world, according to the Ottawa citizen. )

AA had placed a copy of BUTT magazine peeking out from a backpack on a store display. The store regularly sells this magazine which apparently portrays men in pretty explicitly risque & dishabille poses.

It was the head office's new policy to have the magazine on the display rather than behind the counter.

A woman and her daughter went into the store, mom saw the magazine, pulled it out of the backpack to look at it & was pretty aghast at the content.

and

(they got a $100 fine from the municipality because adult mags have to be on a high shelf etc.)

And an article about the founder of the store, who sounds just, um, well, ill & gross. (this article reveals pretty gross details so be prepared)

For the record, for me this isn't about homosexuality at all - it's about the hyper sexualization of everything....

What do you think?

Well... isn't he just special? Nothing quite like conducting private acts while being interviewed... that must have been distracting. For everyone. :001_huh:

His corporate business aside (there have, after all, been many "colorful" corporate giants before this one, he's not even "edgy"), it is entirely inappropriate to display adult magazines in a shop window, particularly a clothing shop that caters to teens.

dishabille poses
You Canadians are so classy. :D (well, not HIM... he's vulgar) And I think Trina Campbell's comments were just about as civil as one could ask. Edited by MyCrazyHouse

Unfortunately, I believe it is the same company.:glare:

oh, bad word, bad word, bad word!

Dd got a cafe press shirt (a Jane Austen one: Obstinate, headstrong girl! ) recently.

This info - that they supply shirts to cafepress etc - needs to get out. I'd never heard of it before.

It is really frustrating because a lot of companies use A.A. shirts because they are sweat-shop free. I used to feel good about wearing these shirts. Now...not so much.

I was "turned off" to this company when a year or so back I was looking for a long sleep tee shirt. (Which I still haven't found) Well, when I was browsing thru their online catalog none of the young teen girls were wearing bras and you could totally tell. I have no interest in dealing with this sort of company, good clothing or not. Now I know what's really going on, even though I had my suspicions before. Thanks for this post.
