mom2abcd
I do well to get an adjustment every 6-8 weeks, but we aren't covered for chiropractic care at this time. Lately my Sacro-illiac join pain has flared up. What sort of doctor could help with SIJ pain or other back pain? I think I've torn something in my shoulder, too. An orthopaedic surgeon sounds like he'd recommend surgery. Maybe Pain Management doctors? Sports Medicine? Even a good massage would help. Do some medical doctors offer that service? newbie
On first reading this I laughed. Insurance never covers the good stuff. The stuff we really need. But, than again, you can get a referral from your GP for physical therapy. I hear they give massages, and will work w/exercises.
klmama
I like my chiropractor just fine, but for sacroiliac pain, the physical therapist was the only one who helped me in the long term. She used some osteopathic manipulation to get things back where they should be, then gave me exercises to strengthen the muscles so they could stay there. It took several visits to straighten things out, but it worked. An osteopath would also know what to do, but most try to practice traditional medicine now, much like an MD, and don't actually do osteopathic manipulation. Call around to see if you can find a PT or an osteopath to help. Your insurance might cover them, too.
Jean in Newcastle
I would also call the chiropractor and ask them what their cash price is for a manipulation. I was really surprised to find out that if I paid my chiropractor out of pocket it was actually a tiny bit less than what I paid after it went to insurance (the co-pay amount and deductible). LaxMom
You're looking for a physiatrist - a rehabilitation specialist. They're often in with orthopaedic / sports medicine practices. From there, they will probably prescribe PT. I, personally, would make every attempt to stick with my chiropractor, though, even seeing if I could negotiate a cash discount and stretch out the interval between adjustments... I don't like to mess around with what works.
G5052
But I would ask around locally among people you know. I go to an sports medicine doctor (orthopedic surgeon with a speciality in feet) periodically for my ankle, and he's done more for me than anyone because he truly understands the physiology of the foot and his explanations of how to stretch and strengthen my ankle were superior to any physical therapist. If you do go to a physical therapist, ask doctors/others for recommendations and ask for a specific one if you can. Some years ago I went to one that our internist recommended for back problems that was superb (our internist is a nationally-ranked power lifter, so he knows!). Unfortunately he moved to go back to school (he always wanted to be a professor), but I still use his exercises for my back problems. mom2abcd
Thanks, everyone! Unfortunately, the insurance's Provider Search doesn't list "Physiatrist." It lists Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and I see one doctor who is nearby and is also listed under Orthopedic Surgery. It lists Physical Therapy, too. What else would a physiatrist be called? My regular doctor doesn't care a hoot about my shoulder pain. I thought maybe a Sports Medicine doctor would take it more seriously, even though I probably injured it directing music rather than hitting a tennis ball. I did copy and paste the info on any osteopaths who showed up under General Practicianers or Family Practice. My last doctor was a DO and he could get the back in place in a pinch. Not nearly the finesse as a chiropractor, though, and DCs can just cover SO much, can't they? I'll look for a good chiropractor and ask about their cash price. Moving brings so much hassle, doesn't it? LOL Thanks for your ideas, gals!
