We found a dead squirrel in the field.  (Our playground is being replaced so we’re just running around in the field in the meantime.)

Child 1 “Z” (the discoverer):  What is that?
Me: Oh!  Umm, that’s a dead squirrel. Don’t touch it.
Child 2:  Why not?
Me:  because it might have germs

Child 3 “M”:  I don’t see any germs.
Me:  They’re invisible because they’re very small.  (Realizing that the class has swarmed and that this is very tempting). Okay, we’re going to go across the parking lot and play over there.
M:  Is the dead squirrel going to be okay?
Me:  Well, no. It’s dead. Its body has stopped working.  It can’t come back and move around again.
M:  Dead is a bad word. My mom says it is. You said a bad word.
Me:  Well, it’s certainly a word that could hurt someone’s feelings if you said you wanted them to be dead or that they were dead. But it’s kind of the only word to describe things that are dead.
M:  My mom says you should say “went with God.”

Me:  Okay.  The squirrel has gone to be with God.
M:  So, what is that in the field?
Me:  Well, the squirrel’s spirit has gone with God. Its body is still there.
Child 1:  What killed it?
Me:  I don’t know. Maybe it ate something poisonous.
Child 4:  Maybe a bird.  They can peck.
Me:  The squirrel is bigger than most of the birds around here. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t pecked to death by sparrows.  Maybe a hawk though.
Child 5:  Or a big eagle.
Me:  Yup.
Child 4:  Or maybe a ninja.

Man, sometimes I am glad my masters is in theology.
