Scarlett
A week ago yesterday he went for a ct scan because he had had a headache for a week. I never heard any more about it. Tonight he and his wife and daughter went to karaoke and when he stood up he collapsed. He is at ER now……he is awake but not really coherent. Waiting for answers. We are 4 hours away. My sisters in law and MIL are there.

Scarlett
SIL says he came out of the CT scan perfectly fine. He said when was unresponsive he was ‘aware’. He stood up at the Pub to get away because it was too much noise. It sounds very much like a vasovagal response. Hopefully. 8

It was related to anxiety/panic disorder. I hope he’s okay now. It’s scary for everyone involved. I’ve experienced it myself—when I was in high school and college, I would sometimes pass out from getting a shot. I learned to head it off before it got to the point of passing out. Best dig through some more with some specialists. I hope he is okay.

How it went down last night though was like the vasovagal response I have witnessed se real times in my Dh and ds. I am familiar with vasovagal response and I understand what they look like. The difficulty is that lots of super-serious things look like vasovagal response. When my husband had a series of vasovagal events culminating in one that seriously, really looked like two seizures in a row, he did follow-up with our regular family doctor as well as a cardiologist and neurologist. All of them were concerned about his having multiple falls. All of them eventually agreed that it truly was vasovagal, but not before making sure there wasn't something more serious going on. The recent history of a headache like that is concerning. The ER will simply tell you it's not a stroke or heart attack--they won't delve properly into all the possibilities because their purpose is to tamp down an emergent, life-threatening event. So in light of your BIL's TWO concerning events over a fairly short time, I'd seek an appointment with a specialist. I hope you don’t think I have given him a medical diagnosis and he has taken it and plans to not listen to the doctors that he is already under the care of. My husband passed out 4 times for no apparent reason. His doctor finally did a comprehensive work up of neurology, heart and gastro. In that process they discovered a problem with his heart. The EP said the heart problem was not causing the fainting. There was also a problem discovered with his esophagus which triggers a vasovagal. The EP is the one who explained all of this after asking me one million questions about what happens when Dh faints. I was just giving my opinion based upon my experience with the family as a whole . KSera
Has he had Covid in the past few months? Intractable headache and fainting are both things that affect some people post Covid. They’re finding that Covid can inflame the vagus nerve which is thought to be why they’re seeing this issue with an increase in people with fainting episodes. 2

Sounds like you and I had a similar experience, and I'm glad your husband's heart and esophagus problems were found and addressed.

Now that he knows what causes it he is better able to prevent it. The scariest was when he passed out mid flight. I was terrified.

I'm not going to lie -- I was afraid something really bad was wrong with him and I kept praying that he would be ok. I was so relieved when you found out exactly what was going on and it was nothing like the things I had been imagining!
