gardenmom5
Died. He was 102. Gail Halvorsen dropped candy on Berlin during the airlift. My father-in-law was a Japanese POW. He shared the story of how he shared a chocolate bar with an old women on a road prior to being repatriated, and how she was moved to tears of gratitude. Despite everything he had suffered - he held no animosity towards the Japanese people. sharing candy/treats - is good. It can span chasms.

Tree Frog
When I was an exchange student in West Berlin in the early '80's, many Germans expressed their thankfulness that the US sent the rosinenbomber and didn't just forget about them. I was surprised because it wasn't only those older people who received the drops, but also some of their younger offspring. I didn't know what the English name was.
